Championship playoff: Lampard's Coventry join Sheffield United, Bristol City, Sunderland in semifinals
Sheffield United and Sunderland had sealed third- and fourth-place on the table prior to kickoff, but the former had a huge role to play in the other two spots as they faced Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane.
The day began with Bristol Rovers and Coventry City in charge of their destinies, and Jack Rudoni's goal before halftime boosted Coventry into fifth place with a 1-0 lead over Middlesbrough.
And it got more tense when Bristol City went down 2-0 at home to Preston North End, opening the door for Blackburn Rovers and Millwall in seventh and eighth. But Ross McCrorie scored twice and Bristol took a tenuous sixth-place in the second halves, putting them two points clear of Blackburn and Millwall.
Blackburn had scored after halftime through Yuki Ohashi, but Anel Ahmedhodzic found a quick equalizer to keep the Rovers out of a playoff spot for the moment. With just one more goal, Blackburn would reach the playoff, as Millwall's early lead at already-promoted Burnley sank into a 2-1 deficit at Turf Moor.
Coventry essentially sealed their place when Rudoni made it a brace in the 88th minute, leaving it between Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers unless there was a major swing at Burnley vs Millwall. The Clarets scored again late to doom Millwall to eighth after a 3-1 decision.
Eight minutes stoppage were signaled at Bramall Lane for Blackburn to find a winner. Bristol City would have six minutes to keep their point or find two more against Preston.
They kept the point, and Blackburn fans were left hoping their side could defend a corner, counter and find a winner within 2-3 minutes.

Glamorgan championship captain Sam Northeast is to have contract talks with the club's management over extending his four-year stay at the county. Northeast, 34, is out of contract at the end of the season and is also wanted by several other counties. He is expecting to sit out the first couple of One Day Cup matches but return for the bulk of the group campaign, after not featuring in the T20 Blast for the first time. Former Gloucestershire and England Lions coach Dawson looks set to remain at Glamorgan, after being hastily appointed in January following the surprise departure of Grant Bradburn. The county is yet to announce any arrivals, departures or contract renewals for 2026.

Fairfield, Conn. advances in Little League World Series, 1 away from U.S. title game
Fairfield, Connecticut's Little League World Series dream is alive and well, and the team is handling the spotlight like seasoned pros. Fairfield National defeated Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 13-1 on Monday to get within one game of playing for the U.S. championship in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Fairfield's next game is against Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Metro Region champions beat Hawaii on Friday before the primetime matchup with South Dakota. Coach Brian Palazzolo said before Monday's game that the message to his players is always the same. "Every pitch, every play, every inning. We take nothing for granted. We're gonna pump strikes and have the defense be ready to make a play behind out pitcher tonight," the coach told CBS News New York. The Metro Region also includes New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, and fans from all over have been in Williamsport to cheer on Fairfield. "We are a baseball family. Nothing can get in the way. Nothing can break us," Palazzolo said. "Errors will happen, it's Little League. If we can limit those to just a little bit, we're better than most teams." First baseman and pitcher Tommy D'Amura said he enjoys being a two-way player. "I prefer hitting, but defense is always fun when you're making the plays and just having a good time in the field," he said. The team will return to Connecticut as heroes no matter what, but they'd love to add a championship banner to the collection at Tunxis Hill Park. Only a handful of teams from the northeast have won the Little League World Series, including Binghamton, New York, in 2016 and Toms River, New Jersey, in 1998. As far as I can tell, looking left to right, everyone pretty much has them at or near the top of the odds board. FanDuel does as well. So tier one is fairly set. Now, I may have some minor disagreements with the order. But that's okay. That's why we'll do the JP poll. That's why we'll do season predictions, but past tier one, normally we're not talking about championship contenders, but this does not profile as a normal year, and I think most of us are agreeing on that at least. So can South Carolina win the SEC? Can Texas A&M win the SEC? Can Auburn do it? Can you do it? Can Florida do it? Can Tennessee do it? How many tier 2 teams in the SEC could reasonably jump up and grab the belt? For a long time, we lived in a world where it was just Alabama, or then it was just Alabama and Georgia, and then there would be Bama or Georgia, or maybe an LSU 2019 pops up, but by and large, it was like one or two teams and you were trying to find a way for something to go wrong for those favorites in order for anyone to have a shot. So that makes tier two on a rung of the ladder where they can reach the belt.
