Raja Raghuvanshi Murder: Shrasti Raghuwanshi, who claims to be the sister of deceased Indore man, is facing criticism for exploiting her brother's death for views and likes
Instagram reels made by the purported sister of deceased Raja Raghuvanshi have gone viral on social media platforms ever since the Meghalaya honeymoon case came to light. The viral videos show Shrasti Raghuwanshi, who has 394K followers on Instagram, lashing out at Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife and alleged killer of her brother. While some videos uploaded by Shrasti show her in a joyful mood during her brother's pre-wedding festivities and rituals, other reels show the family mourning the demise of their loved one with the message that Sonam would be brought to justice.
So why exactly is Shrasti, who claims to be Raja's sister, facing brickbats from social media users?
The Honeymoon Murder
A case that has made national headlines involves Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, a newlywed couple from Indore who travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon in May but did not return home.
The couple vanished on May 23 after checking out from a homestay in Nongriat village sparking a massive search. Raja, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was later found dead in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills district on June 2. This was 10 days after the couple had mysteriously disappeared. Raja's body was discovered with signs of murder.
The breakthrough, however, came when Sonam, the wife, was arrested by the Meghalaya Police along with the three other accused. Sonam had 'surrendered" at Nandganj police station in Uttar Pradesh, the DGP told the media. The couple tied knot on May 11.
Shrasti Raghuwanshi's Instagram
As the nation watched the events unfold in utter shock, videos of Raja's sister began doing the rounds of social media. Shrasti's multiple videos of raising awareness around her brother's death, however, did not sit well with the viewers. Many have since accused the sister of 'clout chasing" and exploiting the family tragedy to gain traction and likes on the video and photo-sharing platform.
The use of 'insensitive" hashtags has also left people on Instagram baffled. The said hashtags include '#trending" '#like" among many others.
Promotional Posts
As Shrasti faced accusations and a blanket condemnation for using the tragedy for personal gains, brand deal videos from when Raja was missing also brought her account with nearly 4 lakh followers a lot of unwanted attention.
A day ahead of Raja's discovery, the sister shared a promotional video of a mobile store in Indore.
Social Media Reaction
'Reel addiction is stripping influencers of basic human sensitivity," an X user wrote who goes by the handle @theskindoctor13 wrote before adding, 'Raja Raghuvanshi went missing on May 23. His sister, an Insta Influenza with 373K followers, kept posting promotional reels almost daily, even after her brother's disappearance. On June 1, the day his body was found, she uploaded a reel promoting a mobile bumper sale. Four days later, she promoted a massage parlour. Next day she promoted a beauty parlour in Indore."
The account further wrote: 'Now that the news has blown up, she's suddenly posting emotional reels with melodramatic captions and sad background music and gaining traction."

I have been watching your reels since your brother went missing and you are using the death of your brother for your social media growth.)"
'Your bhai went missing on May 23. You being sister and a proud Insta Influenza with 373K followers, kept churning out promo reels like nothing happened. On June 1—the day his body was found—you dropped a reel for a mobile sale. Days later, it was massages and makeovers. Now that the internet's paying attention, you are suddenly deep in grief—complete with sad music, tearful captions, and Oscar-worthy expressions. Pretty sure your brother deserved better!" another Instagram user lamented.

From wedding vows to machete blows: Inside the chilling Meghalaya honeymoon murder - Plot revealed in 10 pictures

Sonam Raghuvanshi, once a young woman with aspirations of earning an MBA, now finds herself at the heart of a gruesome murder investigation that has shocked the nation. After completing her graduation, her academic dreams were quietly pushed aside under family pressure, which steered her into helping with the family's plywood business in Madhya Pradesh. It was there that she met Raj Kushwaha, an employee who would soon become central to one of the most chilling honeymoon murder cases in recent memory. Just days after marrying Raja Raghuvanshi in what appeared to be a traditional union, Sonam allegedly conspired with Raj to have her husband killed during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. Police claim Raj stayed behind while coordinating the murder, carried out by three men he recruited. As Raja was brutally attacked with a machete in a remote forest, Sonam stood by, reportedly watching in silence. From a false robbery narrative to an attempted cover-up, the case has unraveled into a horrifying tale of deception, betrayal, and premeditated murder, leaving both families and investigators stunned. Family expectations Sonam's family discouraged her from seeking employment outside the home, urging her instead to assist her brother Govind in running the family's plywood business in Madhya Pradesh. A fatal meeting While working at the family business, Sonam met Raj Kushwaha, who managed billing and accounts. This acquaintance would later become central to a sinister plot. The doomed marriage Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi tied the knot on May 11 and left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20. Just three days into the trip, on May 23, the couple went missing. CCTV footage from their Shillong homestay showed them wearing black jackets and carrying a white suitcase. Raj, described as calm and composed, is now accused of orchestrating the murder of Sonam's husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, just days after their wedding. A suspicious trip During the couple's honeymoon in Meghalaya, Raja's brother Vipin grew suspicious after overhearing frequent phone calls between Govind and Raj. At the time, nothing seemed amiss. A phone conversation between Sonam Raghuvanshi and her mother-in-law on the day Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered has emerged as a chilling focal point in the police investigation. Sonam told her mother-in-law, Uma Raghuvanshi, that she would not break her 'Gyaras' fast just because they were away. When asked where Raja was, she replied, "Raja is walking ahead... his phone is in the bag, I'll get him to call you later." Coordinated killing Police claim Raj directed the murder remotely, instructing three childhood friends—Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—to carry out the killing while he remained behind. Trust betrayed Raj had long been seen as part of the Raghuvanshi family's inner circle—sharing meals and business ties. His alleged betrayal has left the family deeply shocked and devastated. Police allege Sonam and her lover, Raj Kushwaha, planned the murder days before the trip, hiring three men—Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—to execute the crime on the honeymoon in Meghalaya. The murder The assailants allegedly shadowed Raja and Sonam, using a rental car after arriving in Shillong on May 21. Sonam reportedly shared their live location with Raj, who stayed and coordinated remotely. In a forested area, the attackers tried to push Raja off a steep cliff. When that failed, they brutalized him with a machete (dao) carried for the purpose Witnesses and forensic evidence confirm Raja was struck multiple times with a machete—his autopsy showed at least two sharp wounds to the head—until he succumbed to the attack. Unfolding horror What was believed to be a traditional and respectful marriage quickly unraveled into a story of deception, manipulation, and murder—leaving a community stunned and a family in grief. According to police, Sonam watched the entire murder "coldly" without intervening. The coverup Investigators recovered the bloodstained machete near the gorge, a raincoat tied to Sonam's belongings, and Raja's missing jewellery—elements pointing toward a premeditated murder disguised as robbery. Sonam fled the scene soon after, resurfacing days later in Indore and UP. CCTV, phone records, and her travel route all suggest a planned escape—not a victimized bride. Sonam initially claimed unknown thieves attacked Raja during a robbery. but investigators countered this narrative using evidence like recovered valuables and her suspicious behavior. Sonam, Raj, and the three hired men have been arrested and charged. Authorities are probing deeper into the conspiracy—examining Sonam's role, motives, and whether the motive included Sonam's desire to leave Raja and be with Raj.

Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: Sonam Raghuvanshi confesses to involvement in husband's murder

In a major development in the murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi has reportedly confessed to her role in the crime, according to multiple police sources. Sources told NDTV that Sonam admitted to the murder during police interrogation. Though confessions made to police are not admissible in court unless recorded before a magistrate, her statement has become a significant lead in the investigation. Sonam had married Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, on May 11 in Indore. Just ten days later, the couple left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya. By May 23, both had gone missing, and on June 2, Raja's body was discovered in a gorge in the East Khasi Hills. Days later, on June 8, Sonam resurfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, claiming to be unwell. She surrendered to local police and was arrested. The Meghalaya Police confirmed that Sonam confessed during cross-examination in front of another accused, Raj Kushwaha, her alleged boyfriend. Kushwaha, 21, worked at Sonam's family business and reportedly maintained a relationship with her both before and after her marriage to Raja. Police said the two conspired to eliminate Raja.

Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi NEW DELHI: The family of Raja Raghuvanshi on Wednesday apologised to the Meghalaya government as the Indore-based businessman's murder, allegedly by his own wife, had "tarnished" the image of the northeastern state. "I want to apologise to the Meghalaya government that because of one Sonam Raghuvanshi, the state's image has been tarnished. Their police solved this case in 17 days.
