New judge to hear Mahathir's libel suit against Anwar
Former leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad is suing Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for statements made at a PKR congress on March 18, 2023. SHAH ALAM : A new judge will be assigned to hear former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's defamation lawsuit against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Lawyer Alliff Benjamin Suhaimi, representing Anwar, said judicial commissioner Zaharah Hussain, who was scheduled to preside over the trial next week, had informed parties about the matter. 'She told us that a new judge would be assigned to take over the case and fix trial dates,' Benjamin told reporters following a case management yesterday. Zaharah previously fixed Aug 18 to Aug 20 as trial dates. Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, representing Mahathir, confirmed that parties would appear before the new judge on Aug 18. 'The Aug 19 and Aug 20 trial dates still stand and have not been vacated,' he added. Zaharah was the second judge to be assigned to the case, following the recusal of Justice Jamhirah Ali due to family ties with one of the lawyers. Mahathir is suing Anwar for statements made at a PKR congress on March 18, 2023, allegedly referring to him as racist and claiming that he had enriched his family while in office. Mahathir also said that Anwar's statements were made in his capacity as prime minister and, as such, had a far more devastating effect on him than similar statements made by ordinary citizens. He said the statements were intended to dent his public image as they were viewed and heard by a wide spectrum of people. He also said that the allegations had eroded his status as a statesman and former prime minister. He wants Anwar to retract all allegedly defamatory statements about him and publish the retractions on both mainstream and social media. He also wants Anwar to extend an unconditional apology and undertake not to repeat the same or similar statements.

Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus in Malaysia for talks with Anwar on trade, labour and defence
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 12 — Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex today. He arrived at 9 am and was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by the playing of both nations' anthems. Yunus then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Arifudin Mohd Yusof. Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. After the ceremony, Yunus signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia–Bangladesh ties, focusing on trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest. Anwar and Yunus will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering defence, energy, strategic and international studies, semiconductor capacity building and trade promotion. Tomorrow, Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and receive an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will also join a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. In 2024, Malaysia–Bangladesh trade rose 5.1 percent to RM13.35 billion (USD2.92 billion). Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia, with key exports including petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactured goods. The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in mutually beneficial areas, building on the strong ties established since diplomatic relations began in 1972. — Bernama

Anwar faces pivotal decision ahead of GE16, says KJ
Former minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that even in straight fights, BN supporters might choose to back PN candidates in some constituencies, especially given the ongoing unease with DAP. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim faces the crucial question of whether to maintain his existing multi-coalition strategy ahead of the next general election (GE16) or pursue a solo route with Pakatan Harapan (PH), says former minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said that while going solo might allow PH to win a clear mandate in Peninsular Malaysia, securing power in Sabah and Sarawak remained uncertain without wider alliances. 'Anwar's objective, I think, is a second term… This is the time to think about a second term,' Khairy said on last night's episode of Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad's Lebih Masa podcast. 'I don't think he's ready to retire – he's still healthy and has unfinished business to complete in a second term '(But) whether to achieve that objective by joining forces or going solo? If he goes solo, PH can contest alone and might win a clear victory in Peninsular Malaysia.' However, Khairy added that a three-cornered fight in GE16 involving PH, Barisan Nasional (BN), and Perikatan Nasional (PN) would carry immense risks, especially if PH were to clash over seats with BN. Khairy said that even in straight fights, BN supporters might choose to back PN candidates in some constituencies, especially given the ongoing unease with DAP. Meanwhile, PH voters, driven by their opposition to PAS, might be more willing to transfer votes to BN than to PN, said Khairy. He said the solution was closer ties among grassroots members, noting that while party leaders might put up a united front, there was often little to no cooperation between the local branches of PKR and Umno. 'At the grassroots… many times, there are no direct relations so they are like enemies. That's where vote transferability (becomes a problem). There is a lot of work to be done on that,' he said. The Umno-led BN played a crucial role in enabling Anwar to form the unity government in the wake of the 2022 general election, which resulted in a hung parliament. Anwar said last November that the collaboration at the federal level was expected to continue through his current term and extend beyond the next general election, which must be held by early 2028. The four major coalitions that make up the unity government are the Anwar-led PH, BN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. Last month, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said while there were calls for BN to contest GE16 on its own, the coalition was firm on continuing its alliance with PH.
