Jesse Tyler Ferguson Opens Up About Processing 'Criticism' Over 'Stereotypical' 'Modern Family 'Role
The actor, who played Mitchell Pritchett on the beloved ABC sitcom, said he always took it "with such a grain of salt"
While the character was never meant to represent all gay men, Ferguson said he viewed Mitchell as "a shade of who I was"Jesse Tyler Ferguson is reflecting on the criticism he received from gay Modern Family viewers.
The 49-year-old actor, who played Mitchell Pritchett on the beloved ABC sitcom, opened up on the July 9 episode of the Dinner's on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson podcast about the feedback the gay community gave him about his character during the show's 11-season run from 2009 to 2020.
"One of the pressures I've always felt, specifically after being on a show like Modern Family, where I'm portraying a gay man on a television show on a network that is as popular as it is," he began. "You receive criticism, as you do with anything you do, but the criticism that I think I heard the loudest was always from the gay community."
Ferguson said the feedback, as he took it, was that "maybe I didn't represent their idea of what a gay relationship was, or a gay man was."
"I'm representing one person," he reasoned. "I'm in charge of this one character."
While Ferguson felt that his Modern Family character wasn't supposed to represent all gay men, it did represent someone he knew: himself.
The actor said he viewed Mitchell as "a shade of who I was" and joked, "If it's stereotypical, I'm basically playing myself, so, I guess, guilty as charged."
The series was a hit with viewers and won two GLAAD Media Awards for its everyday depiction of a gay couple on primetime TV.
Not only that, but Ferguson and his onscreen love interest, Eric Stonestreet, who played Mitchell's husband Cameron Tucker, both received Emmy nominations for their work.
While Ferguson received five Emmy nominations but never won, Stonestreet won two Emmys out of three nominations.
During an August 2024 episode of Dinner's on Me, Ferguson said playing Mitchell on the small screen felt empowering in a way.
"There was some weird superpower that I felt like I was being protected by this role that I was also playing," he said at the time.
"It kind of gave me this coat of armor, and I had this protection of being this character that people also loved," he continued. "I don't know. It was really weird."

Tristan Rogers, who played super spy Robert Scorpio on ‘General Hospital,' has died at 79
Tristan Rogers, who played legacy character Robert Scorpio on ABC's 'General Hospital,' died Friday, less than one month after he made a special appearance on the soap opera. He was 79. 'The entire 'General Hospital' family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers' passing,' said Frank Valentini, the show's executive producer, in a statement. 'Tristan has captivated our fans for 45 years and Port Charles will not be the same without him (or Robert Scorpio).' Born in Melbourne, Australia, Rogers' first foray into performing was in his early twenties and playing drums in a rock band with a group of friends. They weren't successful so Rogers turned to commercial work and modeling to earn some money. When the band dissolved, Rogers decided to give acting a try. After various roles in Australia, he also worked as a DJ and eventually moved to Los Angeles to try to break into Hollywood. He said casting directors were initially turned off by his accent but he eventually landed a two-day role on 'General Hospital' in 1980. 'I had no idea at the point how big the show was,' Rogers told fellow 'General Hospital' actor Maurice Benard on the YouTube show, 'State of Mind with Maurice Benard' in 2022. 'I had no name. I was brought in expressly to beat up the hero, Luke, (played by Anthony Geary), and then disappear,' Rogers said. His first day was half-over when then-executive producer Gloria Monty asked if he would like to stay on. They had no character written for him so for three weeks Monty asked him to just appear in scenes 'looking furtive, looking suspicious' until they came up with a storyline. It was decided he would play a spy known as 'CK8' and eventually he was given the name Robert Scorpio. The character would remain a fixture in Port Charles for the rest of Rogers' life, even when he wasn't a current cast member. Scorpio's on again/off again romance with Emma Samms' character, Holly Sutton, remained a favorite among fans. Scorpio also had a romance, and many storylines with another spy, Anna Devane, played by Finola Hughes. Scorpio and Devane shared a daughter, Robin, played by Kimberly McCullough. Samms returned to the show for a stint last fall where it was revealed that Scorpio was the father of her adult daughter, Sasha Gilmore (played by Sofia Mattson.) Rogers and Samms left the show together in November 2024 in scenes taped with a nod to 'Casablanca.' He returned to the show in July for one episode when Sasha arrived to his home in France with her new baby. It was then revealed that Rogers had lung cancer. Rogers' other acting credits include 'The Bold and the Beautiful,' 'The Young & the Restless' and 'Studio City,' which won him outstanding supporting actor in a digital drama series at the Daytime Emmy Awards. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Parkerson, and a daughter and a son.

Tristan Rogers, who played dashing spy Robert Scorpio in 'General Hospital,' dies at 79
Tristan Rogers, the Australian actor behind the magnetic Robert Scorpio on 'General Hospital,' died Friday after a battle with lung cancer, according to his manager. He was 79. In an email to The Times, Rogers' manager Meryl Soodak said his client was 'a family man' who is survived by his wife, two children and a grandson. '[He was] loyal, kind and loved his role of Scorpio,' Soodak said. Rogers' signature commanding voice and poised bravado made Scorpio a fan favorite on the long-running soap opera, and became his most recognizable role. As the enemy-turned-close-friend of star character Luke Spencer (played by Anthony Geary), Rogers appeared in some of the most memorable moments of the show's run. In true soap opera fashion, Scorpio would allegedly die a dramatic and fiery death in an explosion in South America in 1992, only to return alive for a short stint in 2006. Through every iteration of his "General Hospital" career, Rogers embraced Scorpio's status as an '80s TV icon. Out of high school, he played in a rock band with friends and began taking up modeling roles, he recalled in an interview. For 'extra money,' he acted in small TV and soap opera roles in Australia in the late '60s and '70s, including stints in the shows 'Bellbird,' 'Number 96' and 'The Box.' Early in his career, his Australian accent deterred casting directors from booking him for American shows, Rogers recalled in a 2022 interview. However, in 1980, he found himself auditioning for what was supposed to be a small, single-episode role on "General Hospital." This caught the eye of Gloria Monty, the show's visionary producer, who asked Rogers to stay on as a recurring character. Rogers was key to shaping the character of Scorpio, from his name to his risk-taking bravery, on what would eventually become the longest-running daytime soap opera in American television history, according to Guinness World Records. Broadcaster ABC notes that the change kept the attention of viewers and contributed to the continuation of the show's success, as spies and agents created complex and popular mystery storylines within the "General Hospital" universe. According to the New York Times, the second week after Rogers' character was revived in 2006, 'General Hospital' was the No. 1 daytime drama among young women, drawing larger-than-average audiences back to the show. Rogers also acted in the series "The Young and the Restless," "The Bay," and "Studio City," as well as voice-acting in the Disney animated film "The Rescuers Down Under." Genie Francis, who played Laura Spencer in 'General Hospital,' said of Rogers on X, 'My heart is heavy. Goodbye my spectacular friend. My deepest condolences to his wife Teresa and their children. Tristan Rogers was a very bright light, as an actor and a person. I was so lucky to have known him.' Kin Shriner, also an actor on the show, added in a video posted on X, 'I met Tristan 44 years ago at the Luke and Laura wedding. We were stashed in a trailer and I was taken by his Australian charm. Over the years we've worked together … we always had fun. I will miss Tristan very much.' In one of his last interviews, Rogers reflected on the joy of his acting career. During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the TV personality and retired professional boxer spoke about the new cooking competition show, Chef Grudge Match, that she'll be hosting. During each episode, two rival chefs are pitted against each other in head-to-head battles for a $10,000 cash prize, the losing chef's most coveted knife and lifelong bragging rights. Reflecting on her own time in the kitchen — having appeared on Chopped in two seasons and Beat Bobby Flay — Ali admits some challenges even had her momentarily stumped. 'There have definitely been some [challenges where] I was just like, 'Man, I wouldn't want to have to work with that,' ' she admits. Calling Chopped 'one of the hardest things I've ever done,' the Laila Ali Lifestyle founder recalls the two occasions where she had to work with a whole pig's head and two full–bodied baby lambs. 'They gave us a smoked pig's head, the whole head. I opened that basket, and there was a smoked pig's head in the basket,' she says. 'I don't even eat pork like that…So I'm like, 'What am I supposed to do with this?' ' She adds, 'They gave me two baby lambs that needed to be butchered. I was stunned for like three minutes before I could even figure out what to do. I just looked to my left, because at that point, I was competing against a Chopped judge, an Iron Chef [Scott Conant]. I was totally out of my weight class.' Of course, like the 'true competitor' she is, she says she saw the professional chef butchering, so she began to do the same. 'There's always something, but there's a way to overcome. Just got to stay focused,' says Ali. Despite the struggles, Ali ultimately won her seasons of Chopped, being crowned a champion once again. Will she competitively get in the kitchen again any time soon? 'Yeah, no, I'm good,' says Ali with a laugh. 'I think I'm done competing. I'm done competing in the kitchen.
