Youth of Bihar no longer want speeches, but employment: Rahul Gandhi
His remarks came a day after a large crowd gathered at the Maharozgaar Mela (mega employment fair) organised by the Youth Congress in Patna.
"The massive crowd at the Mahrozgar Mela is not just a gathering but a message--that the youth of Bihar no longer want speeches, but employment to shape their future. The way the BJP and Nitish government have plunged Bihar into the fire of unemployment, lakhs of youths are forced to migrate for livelihood, leaving behind their village, their family... everything," said Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi, in a post on X.
Emphasising the importance of local job opportunities, Gandhi added that the Congress and the INDIA alliance were focused on finding solutions rather than making empty promises.
"The youth of Bihar are hardworking, capable, and talented--they only need local and respectable employment. Now, the beginning of change has arrived. Congress and the INDIA alliance are not just bringing promises, but solutions. Our focus is clear--rights to skills, employment for every youth, stopping migration, keeping every family together," he said.
The Youth Congress also posted on X, saying that the turnout at the employment fair reflected the seriousness of the state's unemployment crisis. "After Jaipur and Delhi, this was another effort of ours so that qualified youths could get job opportunities through the employment fair," it said.
Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently announced several measures to address public welfare and job creation. On Friday, Kumar said that electricity would be provided free of charge across Bihar. He also mentioned that the government had approved Rs 50,000 crore for 430 new schemes to benefit the people.
"During the previous government's tenure, there was no electricity. There was electricity for only eight hours, even in Patna. We managed all of it. Consumers used to pay a significant amount of money for their electricity bills. We have decided that electricity will be provided for free. We will hold a cabinet meeting and will decide on the same today itself," Kumar said, while addressing a gathering in Motihari in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He further promised, "We have already given 10 lakh government jobs to youth and are working to provide more. In the coming five years, we will decide on providing jobs to one crore youth."
Kumar also announced that the state government would increase the pension amount for differently abled persons, senior citizens, and widows to Rs 1,100 per month.

Britain makes a profit on the ‘aid' it gives to India for first time
Representative image. LONDON: Britain has made a profit on the aid it gives to India for the first time since the end of the British Raj, the annual report and accounts for the Foreign, Commonwealth and & Development Office for 2024 to 2025 have shown. Hidden away in the report's annex, under regional programmes, where it shows how £3 billion was spent across the world, just one country stands out as having made a profit, and not as an expense, and that is India. The report shows a profit of £12,925,000 (Rs 151 crore) for the period 2024 to 2025. A total of £24,526,000 (Rs 287 crore) will now be spent on overseas aid to India 2025 to 2026, the report states. In 2012, India's then finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, had famously described Britain's annual £280 million (Rs 3,277 crore) aid to India as 'peanuts' and British critics repeatedly question why Britain is giving aid to India if India is funding its own space programme and has its own foreign aid budget. In 2017, the Indian govt stated it gave more foreign aid to countries than it received. A phasing out of financial aid by 2015 was duly adopted as UK govt policy in 2012. Britain maintains that since 2015 the UK has given no financial aid to India and instead focuses on business investments which help create new markets and jobs for the UK and India and tackle shared challenges such as climate change. The UK spends millions on climate-related projects in India. This is the first time since 1947 that the UK has made a financial return on development funding sent to the country.

HC notices to MLAs Thakre, Datke over poll pleas
Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued notices to Congress MLA Vikas Thakre and BJP MLA Pravin Datke in response to separate election petitions filed by their opponents in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. The court granted both leaders eight weeks to file their replies. Thakre's victory from West Nagpur was challenged by independent candidate advocate Pritam Khandate. Datke, who won from Central Nagpur, faced a petition from his opponent, Mohammad Imran Qureshi. Both petitions were filed within the 45-day statutory period after the declaration of results, complying with provisions under the Representation of the People Act. While the content of the petitions was not disclosed during the brief proceedings, legal observers note that such challenges typically involve allegations related to electoral conduct or procedural lapses. "The court has granted time for the respondents to file detailed replies," the petitioners said.

DMK using state funds for party activities: Nainar
Trichy: BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran has accused the DMK govt of misusing state funds to promote Ungaludan Stalin scheme as a party activity, and using senior bureaucrats as propaganda secretaries of DMK. He was speaking at the BJP urban party office in Trichy on Wednesday where he visited to discuss the reception for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is scheduled to visit the state on July 26 and 27. "I oppose the Ungaludan Stalin programme. It's a party activity; I wonder how senior bureaucrats agree to run this scheme. This is not right, and we cannot allow it," Nagenthran said. He added that DMK's Oraniyil Tamil Nadu initiative is an unwanted and deceptive move since the state is within India. "We want to unseat DMK from power in 2026, and our alliance is intact. But nobody is questioning the chief minister about the unity of DMK's alliance," Nagenthran said. He said the PM would inaugurate the new Tuticorin airport terminal on July 26 evening and take part in Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district on July 27.
