'Too old': Jamie Elliott act to force Collingwood's rivals into major rethink
Only last year, coach Craig McRae was facing calls on his veterans after Collingwood suffered in 2024 and were carrying veterans Pendlebury (37) and Sidebottom (34) into the current campaign. But the coach stuck by his s and even promoted Elliott into the leadership group.
And the Magpies' 'Dad's Army' have proved that age will not deter this group with a number of their veterans making a mockery of the younger Hawks side on Friday. Collingwood entered the clash with the Hawks with an average age of 28 years and seven months.
After being managed last week, Sidebottom returned with 27 possessions and two goals in a superb display at the MCG. This included one long goal that saw him tear down the wing. While Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos was at his influential best again, it was forward Elliott that stole the show.
On track for a career-best season at 32 years old, Elliott blasted five goals in a player-of-the-match display. This took him equal top of the Coleman Medal sitting alongside Geelong star Jeremy Cameron on 33. Elliott is only six goals short of his career-best tally of 39 in a season, which he achieved back in 2023. And Elliott and Sidebottom's latest display against a hungry-Hawks outfit have prompted the question over whether team's will re-evaluate their list management going forward.
Collingwood have stuck by their veterans when their were calls to move some of them on. Calls have grown for Elliott to be offered a two-year deal to keep him at the club and the forward is certainly proving it would be a bargain.
Code Sports reporter Daniel Cherny pointed out Collingwood are asking the question of 'how old is too old?" with their current crop of veterans pushing the boundaries. This could see a change in how list management is thought out going forward with Sidebottom, Pendleburry and co defying the criticism.
Would not at all be surprised if Collingwood's performance this season leads to a complete recalibration of list management and the "how old is too old?" question. Pies tonight had an average age of 28 years and seven months, with Sidebottom (34) and Elliott (32) among best.

Disappointing result but gonna give Collingwood a big wrap here. People writing them off because of a bad year last season, and a few blokes in their 30's. Those blokes were the difference tonight. Sidebottom and Elliott are bloody champions and still underrated #AFLPiesHawks

Collingwood simply have to offer Jamie Elliott at least a 2 year deal now. He's earned that and more. And the Lions are after him again #gopies

Jamie Elliot is one of the few Collingwood players I love, doesn't play for free kicks, doesn't whinge to the umpire like half of them do, just gets on with it and is a sensational match-winning player. Would love him on your team. #AFLPiesHawks

While fans were impressed with how sharp Collingwood were, so was Hawks coach Sam Mitchell. Speaking after the game, Mitchell talked about his briefing with the players after they were thoroughly outplayed by a number of veterans.
"I asked them actually," Mitchell said about his lengthy post-game meeting with the players. "Just had a bit of a discussion around 'let it all out', 'what's going on?', and 'where are you at?', and 'where are we at?', and 'what do you think?'.
"I think it was pretty clear to everyone that was here and those watching at home, we're at this point, miles off it. That Collingwood team are super sharp. We played Brisbane last week, and they were very good as well, but that was another level today. So that's what we need to aspire to and above to beat them when it matters."
Mitchell's words resonated with Ginnivan. The former Collingwood star was one of the Hawks' best in the defeat having kicked three goals and produced 31 possessions.
But the youngster admitted the team could be in for a hard week at training after Collingwood won the tackle count 82-38 having suggested players should "bring the mouthguards". "Telling some hard truths," Ginnivan told Channel 7 after their meeting with Mitchell. "We've done it before, and we always respond well to that."

A tricky winger showed exactly what Manchester City missed last season
Oscar Bobb appeared poised to play a prominent role for Manchester City last season. But the Norwegian international suffered a fractured leg on the eve of the 24/25 season. From there, Bobb's season was wrecked, and he never got a run at it. As Manchester City kicked off their 25/26 Premier League campaign with a 4-nil win over Wolves yesterday, Oscar Bobb showed exactly what his team missed out on last season. Based on his dazzling performance at Molineux, Bobb could be set to play a prominent role on the right wing for Pep Guardiola's side. Oscar Bobb played a key role for Manchester City in their win at Molineux. When the Manchester City starting lineup was announced, it was exciting to see Oscar Bobb starting on the right wing. Bobb is highly regarded by Pep Guardiola and his teammates. It didn't take him long to make an impact. Bobb's dribbling and movement stood out in the first half. At times, he mesmerised the Wolves defence. Bobb's pressing out of possession was also a key component of his play, and it helped set up Manchester City's second goal of the game. Bobb dispossessed Andre, then made a surging run at the Wolves defence. He calmly slipped in Tijjani Reijnders, who made it 2-nil with a quality finish. That play showed exactly what Bobb adds to Pep Guardiola's side. Yesterday's match opened up more in the second half, as Vitor Pereira's side chased the game, there was more space for the Manchester City attack to operate in. It was this space that Oscar Bobb and Tijjani Reijnders exploited to set up Erling Haaland for Manchester City's third goal of the game. Bobb was at the heart of the move and his close control and neat passing set Reijnders free to tee up Haaland. Haaland did the rest and it was game over. Bobb could be Manchester City's preferred player for the right wing role as the season progresses. Oscar Bobb's performance yesterday was full of promise. The Norwegian international understands the nuances of Manchester City's play and there is no reason why he cannot make the right wing role his own this season. He has the talent to do so. His performance yesterday was sparkling and showed what City missed so dearly last season.

Bears exercise patience with Caleb Williams and his 70% completion, 4,000-yard goals
Bears exercise patience with Caleb Williams and his 70% completion, 4,000-yard goals originally appeared on The Sporting News In his second year in the NFL, Caleb Williams has clear targets to hit. Head coach Ben Johnson has set a benchmark of a 70% completion rate. Williams has embraced the challenge, pledging to complete 70% of his passes and throw for 4,000 yards. This is a big challenge for the Chicago Bears quarterback. Few QBs manage such a high completion rate. Only five reached 70% in 2024. It's a tough but attainable goal, one that demands patience from Johnson and the coaching staff. And that's exactly the approach they plan to take with the Bears' top pick in the 2024 NFL draft. According to ESPN's Courtney Cronin, the Bears coaching staff acknowledges that Williams still needs progress. On Sunday, Cronin reported on SportsCenter that Johnson laid out the statistical benchmarks the team expects Williams to reach in his second year. "That's how they're going to gauge progress from their quarterback in Year 2," Cronin said. Cronin highlighted the coaching staff's patient approach: "I think that also speaks to the patience that this coaching staff is trying to process with their quarterback over the next couple of weeks, even when they get into the regular season." Johnson revealed during training camp that Williams' current completion percentage in practice is below expectations. "That's obviously not the only measure of success they're going to reach, but they're trying to get him closer to that 70 percent mark more than what he's shown so far," Cronin added. There is pressure surrounding Williams, but he has the full support of the coaching staff, who will stand by him even if he struggles early in the season. With that backing, the expectation is clear: find the rhythm sooner rather than later and deliver.
