Steele Sidebottom embarrasses former teammate Jack Ginnivan
Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom played a key role as the Pies continued their stellar season with a dominant 51-point victory over Hawthorn. But in the third quarter it was Sidebottom who stole the limelight as he embarrassed his former teammate. After Isaac Quaynor took an intercepting mark on the back flank, he fed the ball out to Sidebottom with miles of empty space in front of him. The 34-year-old took off down the wing as Ginnivan attempted to apply the pressure by giving chase. The 22-year-old however could do nothing as Sidebottom shuffled towards the Pies forward 50, rubbing salt into the wounds by taking four bounces on his way. Sidebottom ended the contest with 27 disposals and two goals and couldn't help poke fun at Ginnivan during a post-game interview. Talking with Cameron Mooney, the Pies veteran was asked about the last time he took that many bounces down the wing of the MCG. Sidebottom didn't hesitate in burning the Hawthorn forward. 'I was lucky Ginni was chasing me,' Sidebottom said. 'I don't think I ever have to be honest so yeah it was nice.' While Sidebottom was the top ranked player on the ground, teammate Nick Daicos broke a long running hoodoo on Friday night. Despite his illustrious career in the league, Daicos had never taken a contested mark … that all changed against Hawthorn. After a ball up following a goal from Hawk James Worpel, Sidebottom took possession and wheeled around, spotting Daicos in the middle of the ground. Daicos had a small gap to his opponent, coincidentally Worpel again, and took the mark right as the Hawthorn star made body contact and tried to spoil. While there were some doubts over its authenticity, the moment appeared as a stat on the live scores and was immediately noted by the commentary team on Channel 7. 'That looked like a contested mark to me,' Matthew Richardson said. James Brayshaw replied excitedly: 'I think it is. Is that the numero uno?'

'Too old': Jamie Elliott act to force Collingwood's rivals into major rethink
Jamie Elliott, Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom were the stars of the show for Collingwood as they obliterated the Hawks 16.11 (107) to 8.8 (56) win on Friday night and the Magpies' list management could be set to force a rethink for rivals. Elliott's latest five-goal display for the Magpies has once again shown rivals Collingwood are not going to slow down this year, despite boasting the oldest average age of any squad in the AFL. Only last year, coach Craig McRae was facing calls on his veterans after Collingwood suffered in 2024 and were carrying veterans Pendlebury (37) and Sidebottom (34) into the current campaign. But the coach stuck by his s and even promoted Elliott into the leadership group. And the Magpies' 'Dad's Army' have proved that age will not deter this group with a number of their veterans making a mockery of the younger Hawks side on Friday. Collingwood entered the clash with the Hawks with an average age of 28 years and seven months. After being managed last week, Sidebottom returned with 27 possessions and two goals in a superb display at the MCG. This included one long goal that saw him tear down the wing. While Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos was at his influential best again, it was forward Elliott that stole the show. On track for a career-best season at 32 years old, Elliott blasted five goals in a player-of-the-match display. This took him equal top of the Coleman Medal sitting alongside Geelong star Jeremy Cameron on 33. Elliott is only six goals short of his career-best tally of 39 in a season, which he achieved back in 2023. And Elliott and Sidebottom's latest display against a hungry-Hawks outfit have prompted the question over whether team's will re-evaluate their list management going forward. Collingwood have stuck by their veterans when their were calls to move some of them on. Calls have grown for Elliott to be offered a two-year deal to keep him at the club and the forward is certainly proving it would be a bargain. Code Sports reporter Daniel Cherny pointed out Collingwood are asking the question of 'how old is too old?" with their current crop of veterans pushing the boundaries. This could see a change in how list management is thought out going forward with Sidebottom, Pendleburry and co defying the criticism. Speaking after the game, Mitchell talked about his briefing with the players after they were thoroughly outplayed by a number of veterans. "I asked them actually," Mitchell said about his lengthy post-game meeting with the players. "Just had a bit of a discussion around 'let it all out', 'what's going on?', and 'where are you at?', and 'where are we at?', and 'what do you think?'. "I think it was pretty clear to everyone that was here and those watching at home, we're at this point, miles off it. That Collingwood team are super sharp. We played Brisbane last week, and they were very good as well, but that was another level today. So that's what we need to aspire to and above to beat them when it matters." Mitchell's words resonated with Ginnivan. The former Collingwood star was one of the Hawks' best in the defeat having kicked three goals and produced 31 possessions. But the youngster admitted the team could be in for a hard week at training after Collingwood won the tackle count 82-38 having suggested players should "bring the mouthguards". "Telling some hard truths," Ginnivan told Channel 7 after their meeting with Mitchell. "We've done it before, and we always respond well to that." Nick Daicos has finally ended one of the most bizarre statistical anomalies in the AFL in Collingwood's 51-point thrashing of the Hawks on Friday night. At just 22 years old, the Collingwood superstar is already a premiership player, a two-time All Australian and a club best and fairest winner. But staggeringly, one thing the diminutive midfielder had not done in an AFL game was take a contested mark prior to Friday's dominant 16.11 (107) to 8.8 (56) win over Hawthorn. Daicos' failure to add that stat to his glowing resume had gained a life of its own, with countless comments, plenty of ribbing from his teammates and even an X account dedicated to the pursuit. Just over five minutes into the Pies' huge Friday night clash with Hawthorn at the MCG, the moment that has taken Daicos 82 games and well over 1000 days finally arrived. Daicos can slice and dice teams like only a handful of players in the league, but when he pushes forward he's severely hampered in one-on-one contests. That at least explains part of the reason why he'd never taken a contested mark since entering the AFL. It's something his teammates are well aware of as Isaac Quaynor pointed out once again during Collingwood's clash with Fremantle a fortnight ago. 'You want Nick Daicos wherever you can get him and it's good to have him up forward,' Quaynor told Channel 7. 'He almost took his (first) contested mark. We've been trying to get him a contested mark all year so it was close.' Brother Josh Daicos also took great delight in ribbing his brother's inability to take a pack mark following the club's win over Essendon in Round 7. 'We get into Nick sometimes trying to get him a contested mark,' Daicos said on Fox Footy. 'When they saw me have two back-to-back they got around me which made me feel good.' Adding to the theatre of the situation, a parody account on X had begun keeping track of the number of days. Prior to Friday night's game, the account titled 'Has Daicos taken a Contested Mark?' last posted on May 22 that it had apparently been 1,145 days without the star achieving the feat. In a superb pivot, the account tweeted again during the match-up with the Hawks, writing: 'Has Daicos won a Brownlow? No. Day 1,170.' Fans online were also having a field day over the so-called achievement. 'Reckon he might get his first bruise at some stage in the next 82 as well,' one fan quipped. 'Never seen any player get congratulated for this,' wrote another. 'Here comes 'doesn't count' or 'softest contested mark',' another fan correctly predicted. 'I've seen my dog take a tougher contested grab than that!' was another observation. A fifth joked: 'He's got a taste for it now. Watch out.' A sixth added: 'The fact that people care about this is concerning.' Outside of Daicos' moment, the Pies trailed briefly in the first term before putting their foot down in another ominous performance. Kicking 12 goals to five after quarter-time, Collingwood star Jamie Elliott led the way with a game-high five, backed up by Brody Mihocek (four) and Sidebottom (two).

Magpies welcome back ‘important magnets'
The Collingwood cavalry is coming. The already red-hot Magpies will welcome back stars Bobby Hill, Darcy Moore, Steele Sidebottom, Scott Pendlebury and Lachie Schultz for their bout with Hawthorn on Friday. Hill (personal), Sidebottom (managed) and Pendlebury (illness) all missed just one match, while Moore and Schultz have missed the past two. The key absences have had little impact on 'Fly's Pies', with brilliant wins over Adelaide and North Melbourne in the last fortnight. The Hawks, meanwhile, have suffered losses to Gold Coast and Brisbane across the same stretch. Collingwood coach Craig McRae understands the risk of major changes but is rapt to welcome back 'some really important magnets'. 'That could be a cost (changes) but the reward is we've got experience around some roles we really rate,' he said. 'We've got a coach connection every week, it's not something we take for granted – team chemistry is really important to us. 'I think there's a reality some would know that, it's not so much last in last out, that doesn't work like that, but we want to keep rewarding behaviour around here. 'Guys playing really well at VFL level like Wil Parker has been doing, got his chance and showed he's capable at the level. Mitchell, returning from injury, has played the past three matches in the twos. A discussion with Mitchell about his timeline is high on McRae's priority list as he feels the ball winner remains at least a fortnight away. 'I went and watched the VFL on Sunday (and) it was a tough game. When you're taking guys out last minute, there's a ripple effect to that,' he said. 'Tom, I've got to have a chat to him this afternoon, but I think he's a couple of weeks away at least.' Superstar Nick Daicos ran riot after half time last week against North Melbourne to finish with a match-shaping 38 disposals. Hawthorn has employed tagger Finn Maginness to Daicos to some effect in recent years and McRae expects the Hawks to double down on that tactic on Friday. 'We anticipate Maginness will go to (Daicos), last time they played him as a sub and he didn't come on until the game was all over,' he said. 'We anticipate that may happen again.'

Collingwood veteran Jeremy Howe unsure about 2026 for trio of Magpies including Scott Pendlebury
Veteran Collingwood defender Jeremy Howe concedes the seasons are 'getting longer' but is no closer to making a call on continuing in to 2026 and doesn't talk about it with his fellow 'old guys' Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom. The veteran trio remain key planks in the pursuit of a second premiership in three years and have helped guide the Magpies to the top of the ladder, including 37-year-old Pendlebury who has zoomed past 400 games. Howe, 34 and in his 15th season, has played 10 of 11 games this season, including last week's 45-point take-down of North Melbourne which was missed by Pendlebury, who was ill, and fellow 34-year-old Sidebottom, who was managed. With 262 game under his belt, Howe said he was feeling every game more and more and was in 'discussions' about his future, confident there would be a decision everyone would be 'happy' with. 'For me the seasons aren't getting any shorter, they're getting longer' Howe said on Monday. 'For me it's always a physical and mental check-in, see how I'm going, and at the moment everything is in really good shape. 'I can't afford to project too far forward. As long as I'm feeling like I am at the moment, all things are probably going in the right direction. 'The discussions will keep happening. I know it's a talking point in terms of how old we are and what happens, but we'll come to a decision that we're all happy with, no doubt.' Howe said Pendlebury and Sidebottom, both headed for the Hall of Fame after remarkable careers, should be ' entitled to write what they want to do' when it comes to their futures. But it's not a point of discussion between the great mates and teammates. 'I actually haven't even discussed that,' he said. 'Me, Sidey and Pendles get on like a house on fire, us three old guys, but we don't have those discussions at all. 'Every individual is a little bit different. The seasons are so long, you're not sure how it's going to pan out. While defender Brayden Maynard has succumbed to a footy injury and could miss up to six weeks, captain Darcy Moore, Lachie Schultz, Sidebottom and Pendlebury are all chances to return for Friday night's MCG showdown against Hawthorn. But it's unclear whether Bobby Hill, who was was a late withdrawal on Saturday because of personal reasons, will return.
