When Marketing Plans Meet Reality: Coffee Mate's "The White Lotus" Moment

Forbes11-04-2025

Nestle's Coffee-mate and HBO's The White Lotus collaborated on special flavors. The season finale ... More had a major surprise in store for the brand.
In the fast-paced world of marketing, even carefully planned campaigns can take unexpected turns. Coffee Mate's recent collaboration with HBO's The White Lotus shows how brands must be prepared to pivot when reality doesn't match the marketing plan. [Spoiler Alert - details of the final episode of The White Lotus Season 3 follow.]
Coffee Mate had partnered with HBO to release two limited-edition creamers themed around the show's third season set in Thailand: Thai iced coffee and piña colada flavors. What the Nestlé-owned brand didn't know was that in the season finale, poisoned piña coladas would become a central plot point. A character nearly kills his family using the drink spiked with seeds from a poisonous tree.
Coffee Mate marketers responded perfectly to the unexpected plot twist on Instagram
So what happens when your branded piña colada creamer suddenly shares the spotlight with a murder plot involving poisoning the same tropical drink? 'Poison' is an association food brands usually try to avoid.
When the episode aired, Coffee Mate's marketing team responded swiftly on Instagram with a simple yet perfect message: "Well this is awkward." That single post resonated with consumers and other brands alike precisely because it acknowledged the unexpected connection in an authentic way.
This rapid response was possible because of Coffee Mate's approach to marketing. As Daniel Jhung, president of Nestlé USA's coffee and beverage division explained to the Wall Street Journal, they operate with "a virtual war room" during key events. They observe reactions in real time and respond quickly without requiring multiple approval layers.
Anyone who's worked in marketing knows the frustration of waiting for approvals while a timely opportunity slips away.
The Coffee Mate team's ability to react wouldn't have been possible without proper empowerment. As Jhung noted, "If they've got to go through five layers of approval, you're not going to be able to do these things in real time." Some marketers still operate with rigid approval structures, which can kill momentum and relevance.
For Coffee Mate, these entertainment collaborations are more than just flavor extensions. They are intended to make the brand "be part of the zeitgeist and pop culture, and resonate with young consumers," according to Jhung. By aligning with buzzy properties like The White Lotus, the brand positions itself within conversations that traditional advertising can't penetrate. Of course, there are risks when plot lines are closely guarded secrets.
Marketers face a delicate balance: When do you amplify a moment, and when do you let it naturally fade away? Coffee Mate is taking an organic approach to this unexpected attention. Jhung notes, "If the conversation naturally dies, then it'll die. But sometimes it brings new life because someone says something clever, or another brand says something else, and you can continue the dialogue."
The Coffee Mate Instagram account responded to many comments on their original post but didn't add new piña colada or White Lotus content.
This case offers a few valuable takeaways for marketing leaders:
Whether this unexpected connection helped or hurt Coffee Mate's piña colada creamer sales remains to be seen, but the brand has already won by demonstrating marketing agility at its finest. The ability to pivot gracefully might just be the most valuable marketing skill we can develop.

Billie Eilish's Brother, Finneas, Revealed He Was 'Tear Gassed Almost Immediately' While Attending A Peaceful Anti-ICE Protest, Plus More Celebs Who Are Denouncing The Raids

Finneas O'Connell has revealed that he was tear-gassed while attending a recent protest against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department's raids. The protests, which took place over the weekend, saw people campaigning against ICE's raids of numerous workplaces in LA while searching for alleged immigration violations. On Friday, over 40 people were arrested in a raid, with LA Mayor Karen Bass telling reporters, 'ICE initiated enforcement actions on several workplaces. That created a sense of chaos, outrage, fear, and terror because people are very worried as to what happened to their families.' President Donald Trump then deployed 2,000 National Guard soldiers to LA to put an end to the protests, which led to numerous attendees being tear-gassed. Finneas, who is the elder brother of singer Billie Eilish, wrote on his Instagram stories: 'Tear gassed almost immediately at the very peaceful protest downtown- they're inciting this.' Finneas said that he was tear-gassed while attending a protest in Los Angeles over immigration raids on Sunday. 'Fuck ICE,' Finneas wrote on his Instagram Sunday, reposting several other messages about the protests and raids, including one that said 'if you are into this fascist shit you are small and weak and will lose.' President Donald Trump deployed California's National Guard Sunday over the protests, with California Gov. What Preschooler Says During Acting Audition Leaves Mom Speechless

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Let's be honest—most adults have stretched the truth at least once to land a job. But one preschooler may have taken it to the next level. A recent survey by StandOut-CV of 2,012 U.S. adults revealed that more than three in five respondents (64.2%) admitted to lying on their resume at least once. But resume embellishments aren't just for grown-ups. When Harlyn Brielle was just four years old when she improvised during an acting audition - in a desperate bid to get the role. Her mom, Bree, 33, recently shared the clip on Instagram (@breenotacomedian), where it quickly went viral, amassing over 1.9 million views. "We rehearsed the commercial every day for weeks and she did that part perfectly," she told Newsweek. "But when we got to the questions, she had her own agenda." Two screenshots from the viral video showing the young girl looking at her mom and then smiling. Two screenshots from the viral video showing the young girl looking at her mom and then smiling. Instagram/@breenotacomedian During the virtual interview, Harlyn was asked whether she could speak any other languages. Without missing a beat, she confidently replied, "Yes," then proceeded to invent her own language on the spot—before wrapping up the impromptu answer by repeatedly saying "gracias" in Spanish. Bree, who had spent weeks rehearsing the commercial script with Harlyn, was caught completely off guard. "We rehearsed the commercial every day for weeks and she did that part perfectly," she told Newsweek. "But when we got to the questions, she had her own agenda." Trying to keep things on track, Bree gently clarified to the interviewer that her daughter could do accents, not speak other languages. But Harlyn wasn't about to let go of her narrative, doubling down on her claim with even more Spanish flair. Unfortunately, the audition—allegedly for a cereal brand—turned out to be a scam. Bree discovered the red flag when the organizers asked for money. "When I told Harlyn, her response was, 'No way we're paying them. I'm the star—they should pay me!'" Bree recalled. Although that particular opportunity didn't pan out, Harlyn, now seven, has since landed a small role in the film Girl in the Closet. Determined to support her daughter's acting ambitions, Bree even created an Instagram page dedicated to her budding career: @harlynbrielle. "Harlyn is one of those kids where I never know what's going to come out of her mouth," Bree said. "As a Virgo, she's bold, confident, and—if you ask her— she's always right!" Online audiences seem to agree. The original video, posted on May 6, has garnered more than 165,000 likes and many users can relate to the text layered over the clip. It says: "When you lie on the job application [and] say you're bilingual to try [and] get the job." "I checked the bilingual box on an Indeed app and listed 'mildly conversant' on my resume. I got the job and ended up answering phones while googling responses!" resonated one user. "This is what real confidence looks like. I hope she keeps it forever," complimented another and a third pointed out: "Her mom was just as surprised as we all were."
