India's Mobile Exports Jump From Rs 1,500 Cr To Rs 2 Lakh Cr In Decade: IT Minister

India.com2 days ago
New Delhi: India's mobile phone exports have surged 127 times over the past decade, rising from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2 lakh crore, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Wednesday. The minister attributed this unprecedented growth in mobile manufacturing to the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
Over the last ten years, mobile production in India has witnessed a 28-fold increase, growing from ₹18,000 crore to ₹5.45 lakh crore. Under the aegis of the National Policy on Electronics (NPE) 2019, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had notified the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large-Scale Electronics Manufacturing (LSEM) and the PLI Scheme for IT Hardware.
"The PLI Scheme for Large-Scale Electronics Manufacturing has significantly impacted the mobile manufacturing sector in India, particularly in transforming the country from a net importer to a net exporter of mobile phones. Bharat is now the second-largest mobile manufacturing country in the world," the minister stated in his written reply.
As of June 2025, the PLI Scheme for Large-Scale Electronics Manufacturing has attracted a cumulative investment of ₹12,390 crore, led to a cumulative production of ₹8,44,752 crore, exports worth ₹4,65,809 crore, and created 1,30,330 direct jobs.
Meanwhile, the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware has attracted a cumulative investment of ₹717.13 crore, resulted in cumulative production worth ₹12,195.84 crore, and generated 5,056 direct jobs as of June 2025. Total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the electronics manufacturing sector over the last five years (since 2020–21) stands at USD 4,071 million, of which USD 2,802 million has been contributed by MeitY PLI beneficiaries.
As part of its 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives, the government launched PLI schemes across several sectors in 2020 to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract investments, boost exports, integrate India into the global supply chain, and reduce import dependency.

Chilla elevated road much delayed, now pillar steel found subpar

Noida: A long-delayed infrastructure project meant to ease traffic between Delhi and Noida has come under fresh scrutiny after the Noida Authority flagged the use of substandard steel in its construction. The quality of steel used in the Rs 893-crore Chilla Elevated Road, under construction by the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation Limited (UPSBCL), was flagged during a recent review by Noida Authority. The inspection revealed that a non-approved grade of steel was being used in the piling work for the project. On Friday, CEO Lokesh M expressed dissatisfaction with the UPSBCL for using substandard steel in the pillars and issued a notice to the construction agency, directing it to replace the material with the approved grade of steel. "The steel used meets the required BIS standard for high-strength deformed bars used in reinforced concrete and is compliant with IRC and MORTH specifications applicable to the project," Gupta said. He added that the brand is widely accepted and used by other public sector undertakings, including the Indian Railways, UP PWD, and the Greater Noida Authority. He also said that regular third-party lab testing is conducted to verify the steel's mechanical and chemical properties, and test reports are available for review. UPSBCL, however, has assured the Noida Authority that it will discontinue use of the current steel brand. Going forward, only materials from reputed suppliers such as SAIL, TATA, RINL, or JSPL will be used for the rest of the work. While only 6% of fresh work has been completed since construction resumed in March this year, the overall progress stands at approximately 20%, including earlier work done before the project stalled in 2021. The six-lane, 5.9-km elevated corridor aims to connect the Chilla Regulator near Mayur Vihar to the Mahamaya Flyover in Noida, offering relief to thousands of daily commuters who currently face up to an hour of congestion along the Delhi-Noida Link Road. First proposed in 2012 and inaugurated by chief minister Yogi Adityanath in 2019, the Chilla elevated road has faced years of delay due to funding bottlenecks, the relocation of a GAIL gas pipeline, and the Covid pandemic. No construction took place between 2021 and early 2025. The project resumed only after MG Contractors was appointed in December 2024, having submitted the lowest bid—7% below the estimated cost. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly ease congestion near Film City, Sector 14A/15A, and improve access to Greater Noida, Kalindi Kunj, and Faridabad.

Tender row at key F&CC meeting lay bare rift between office-bearers

Ludhiana: The Finance and Contracts Committee (F&CC) meeting scheduled for Friday could not be convened as senior deputy mayor Rakesh Prashar and deputy mayor Prince Johar boycotted the session at the mayor camp office, sources said. The matter has been escalated to the party high command. Over 400 resolutions aimed at the city's development were to be discussed at the meeting. However, disagreements between the mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor put a spanner in the works. A few days ago, senior deputy mayor Prashar expressed concern about allotment of tenders by the MC for beautification of parks in Focal Point at an approximate cost of Rs 10 crore. He alleged that MC officials had flouted norms by awarding tenders using the e-mail ID of a retired executive engineer. However, officials said that they had permission from the XEN to use his ID. When mayor Inderjit Kaur called Prashar to attend the meeting, he initially insisted that clarification be sought from officials. The mayor then requested his attendance to discuss the issue with MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? She replied that they would hold the meeting before addressing the matter. When deputy mayor Prince Johar arrived, Prashar refused to enter the meeting venue till the issue was addressed. This prompted the mayor to tell him to do as he wished. Thereafter, both Prashar and Johar left the meeting venue. Sources said that the deputy mayor was also agitated by recent employee transfers without his approval. After their departure, the mayor attempted to approach them with the assistance of MLAs, but they remained adamant. MLAs are now expected to intervene, and a meeting has been scheduled to resolve the issue. When contacted, senior deputy mayor Rakesh Prashar said, "Officials should clarify why they opened the tenders from the ID of a retired XEN and why they gave away tenders with less savings for the department. Many tenders are given away in this manner. When we are not given answers to previous queries then what is the point in approving more resolutions?" Meanwhile mayor Inderjit Kaur denied boycott of the meeting by the deputy mayor and senior deputy mayor. "Both had some personal engagements, so they could not attend the meeting. We will fix the meeting again next week," she said. MSID:: 122905555 413 |
