UAE to Ban Single-use Plastics by 2026
The UAE will ban single-use plastics by 2026 said Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
In a statement marking World Environment Day (June 5), Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak reaffirmed the country's unwavering commitment to reducing plastic pollution and protecting the environment—both nationally and globally.
Speaking in line with this year's theme, 'Beat Plastic Pollution,' Dr. Al Dahak announced that starting January 1, 2026, the UAE will implement a nationwide ban on the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic products.
This sweeping reform builds on earlier steps, including the 2024 ban on plastic bags, as part of a phased approach toward eliminating unnecessary plastic from daily life.
Dr. Al Dahak said: 'The policy prioritises reducing plastic waste and promoting innovative solutions for sustainable packaging and recycling. Furthermore, we are resolutely committed to managing hazardous waste and aggressively reducing plastic waste at every level.
'Each of us, as responsible members of our community, can play a leading role in realising our nation's vision by joining the mission to eliminate unnecessary plastic from our daily lives.
'Let us become active agents of change, leading a powerful movement towards thriving communities, and a vibrant, resilient environment. Let us protect the land and the sea that are so integral to our lives, for ourselves, our loved ones, and for generations to come.'
Dr. Al Dahak noted that the UAE's actions are aligned with international efforts and are bolstered by programs like Clean Rivers, an initiative by Erth Zayed Philanthropies. This project tackles plastic pollution in waterways by empowering local communities and supporting innovation to achieve plastic-free rivers.
In parallel, the UAE's Circular Economy Policy plays a critical role by promoting sustainable resource use across sectors such as: Green infrastructure
Transportation
Manufacturing
Food systems
The policy is designed to reduce plastic waste, promote sustainable packaging, and expand recycling.

Bahrain and UAE Ministers Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Municipal and Agricultural Sectors

Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, affirmed the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the continuous growth of bilateral relations under the support and guidance of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. This came during His Excellency's meeting with Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, as part of his official visit to the United Arab Emirates. The two sides discussed various topics of mutual interest in the fields of municipal affairs and agriculture. During the meeting, both ministers explored ways to enhance joint cooperation in municipal work — particularly in building inspection, violation monitoring mechanisms, and the exchange of regulatory expertise. They also discussed collaboration on the development and implementation of smart city management systems, city landscaping and afforestation projects, and the sharing of knowledge on nursery establishment and agricultural development. His Excellency Al Mubarak was also briefed on the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment's role in organizing and managing central and seasonal markets. He praised the ministry's efforts in promoting sustainable services and improving the local environment. On the agricultural front, discussions covered joint initiatives for planting native and Ghaf trees, as well as knowledge exchange regarding the management of plant genetic resources centers and the UAE's experience in date palm cultivation and processing. On the sidelines of the visit, Minister Al Mubarak conducted several field visits to review leading UAE projects and experiences firsthand. Among the key stops was the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in Dubai — a research institution specializing in innovative agricultural solutions for food and water security challenges in arid and semi-arid regions. The minister also visited "Bee'ah" — an environmental management company in Sharjah — along with the Plant Genetic Resources Center, "SILA" Food and Technology Company, and Dubai Municipality. Minister Al Mubarak praised the UAE's impressive achievements in environmental protection, climate change mitigation, local food production, waste reduction, and sustainable urban planning. He expressed optimism about the continued collaboration between Bahrain and the UAE, which promises to bring mutual benefits to both nations and their people. The minister was accompanied during his UAE visit by Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs, and Eng. UAE's new Blue Visa: Everything you need to know about it
The announcement was made at the World Government Summit 2025, taking place in Dubai from February 11 to has launched the first phase of Blue Visa system for sustainability innovators. The UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, along with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP), announced the launch of the visa system in the country. According to a Wam report, twenty sustainability thought leaders and innovators will receive the visa during this phase. The announcement was made at the World Government Summit 2025, taking place in Dubai from February 11 to 13. What is the Blue Visa? The Blue Visa is a 10-year residence visa designed for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to environmental protection and sustainability, both within the UAE and globally. This visa is intended for: Supporters of environmental action Members of international organizations and companies Members of associations and non-governmental organisations Global award winners Distinguished activists and researchers in environmental work How to apply for the Blue Visa in UAE Environmental experts, nature advocates, and eco-conscious individuals can apply for the Blue Visa directly through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security or through nomination by competent authorities in the UAE. Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, ICP director-general, explained that the Authority will provide 24/7 access to the Blue Visa service for eligible individuals via its website and mobile application, subject to approved terms and conditions. Why has the UAE introduced the Blue Visa? The Blue Visa was introduced to enhance and further the UAE's sustainability efforts. It extends the Golden and Green Residencies, which were launched earlier. The UAE has committed to strengthening its position as a global leader in sustainability through innovative initiatives and projects. The Blue Visa reflects the UAE's wise leadership's vision to attract leading thinkers, innovators, and individuals with exceptional achievements in climate change and sustainability, both domestically and internationally, emphasized Dr Amna Bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
