Pirates Starter Tagged As Best Available By MLB Insider As Deadline Nears
The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to underperform despite having the best pitcher in the league, Paul Skenes, on their roster, which has kept them in the cellar of the National League Central. With the deadline approaching, the Pirates have the best right-handed starter on the market, and it's not Skenes but rather his teammate Mitch Keller, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Keller has been a solid arm for the Pirates with 15 quality starts in 21 starts this season, and yet he is 4-10 entering Thursday. The right-hander has a 3.53 ERA for the Pirates and is going to be a sought-after pitcher on the market for teams looking for a controllable arm this season. Keller won't be a free agent until 2029 and will come with a price tag that can help the Pirates for the future as they try to build around Skenes and Oneil Cruz.
With the trade deadline next week, the Pirates are expected to be active as they are out of the playoff mix and are looking forward to next season and beyond. Keller could be a piece that moves to bring in the future, but has also served as a good pairing to Skenes in the Pittsburgh rotation.
Keller could net MLB-ready hitting as they look to build, and with top pitching prospect Bubba Chandler waiting to make his way to PNC Park, the Pirates will almost certainly be fine with moving the starter.
Keller has shown promise at the major league level, and it begs the question of how big of jump he will make with a competitive team to surround him.

It's a great joke, and then Billy Wagner, who is so important to us as D3 dorks, Division 3 baseball, to see D3 on the plaque in bronze. Honestly, that was one of the parts where he got the most emotional, uh, when he was like, you know, the fact that, um, you know, someone that's 5' nothing who played Division 3 baseball in the middle of nowhere could be a Hall of Famer is really special to him. One of my favorite stats of all time, one of my favorite fun facts, the top 3 K/9 seasons in NCAA history, they are all three of Billy Wagner's seasons. Orioles reinstate C Adley Rutschman and LHP Keegan Akin, but Félix Bautista won't return soon
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles reinstated catcher Adley Rutschman from the 10-day injured list Monday and fortified their depleted bullpen by bringing back lefty Keegan Akin from the IL. The return of Akin coincided with the news that closer Félix Bautista will endure an extended stay on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since July 24. 'An MRI (determined) there was a lot of swelling in the shoulder,' interim manger Tony Mansolino said. 'We can't quite make a determination yet, or diagnose it until the swelling goes down. That's going to be probably more weeks than days.' Bautista underwent Tommy John surgery in October of 2023 before returning this season to reclaim his role as the team's closer. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 17 saves for the last-place club. 'It's incredibly disappointing,' Mansolino said of Bautista's latest injury. 'He's an important part of the Baltimore Orioles. A very unfortunate set of circumstances.' The return of Rutschman should improve the team's offense and lift the mood in the clubhouse. Rutschman — the top overall pick in the 2019 draft — was batting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs before going on the IL on June 20 with a left oblique strain. 'It's a big piece. He walked into the room and brought a lot of energy, right away,' Mansolino said. 'Lot of smiles, lot of hugs.' Akin missed 21 games with left shoulder inflammation. He's 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA.
