Ellie Scotney reveals promise she made to late friend Georgia O'Connor before emotional world title win

ELLIE SCOTNEY took a step closer to becoming undisputed world champion - while keeping her promise to the late Georgia O'Connor.
Scotney and O'Connor came up through the amateur ranks together and formed an inseparable bond boxing across the globe.

Scotney dedicated her title victory to Georgia
But tragically O'Connor - aged 25 and three fights into her professional career - passed away after bravely battling cancer.
The devastating news came only two weeks after she married and two months before Scotney's unification bout against Yamileth Mercado.
The WBC, IBF and WBO super-bantamweight champion accompanied O'Connor at her wedding and vowed to fight on in her name.
And Scotney, 27, told SunSport: "I always say it as much as I can, I'll make sure her name and her story is remembered.
"The fight she fought she was endless with it and the way she battled with it and the that was just so much bigger than whatever we do in the ring. She showed me that in her ways."
Scotney - promoted by YouTube star-turned boxer Jake Paul - even walked to the ring with O'Connor's father John before her points win over Mercado.
She added: "To have her dad there, I felt her there every step of the way."
Scotney had to endure an emotional training preparation and revealed: "I was crying in sessions.
"I was in a bad place, a very bad place and I didn't enjoy this camp at all.
"And people said, what's been your hardest sacrifice? And it's been emotion in the sense that I wasn't allowed to grieve.

"But I had to put that to a side and that was hard. She said to my mum, 'I know she's in camp but I more or less need to say bye.'
"But it weren't like that, it was like, 'I'll see you soon.' And as I left, she kissed every one of my knuckles.
"She was like, 'You're gonna get the knockout!' Obviously I did get the knockout but I got the win and I know she would have been shuffling up there."
Scotney now just has the WBA belt - held by Mayelli Flores Rosquero - left to win in honour of her Nan Eileen who died aged 99.
She said: "I'm literally one fight away from completing collection. My Nan always said, 'Finish the collection.'
"To know I'm one fight and one step away and we're there."

Hamilton's switch from Mercedes to Ferrari, announced early in 2024, was one of the biggest driver changes in the sport's history. So hotly anticipated was the first sight of the seven-time F1 champion in his new surroundings that the first image of him standing in front of Enzo Ferrari's house at Maranello broke the internet when posted on social media in January this year. And there was early promise, despite a wretched debut for the Scuderia at the Australian Grand Prix. In just the second round of the season, 40-year-old Hamilton tasted victory with Ferrari for the first time when he won the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix. But he was disqualified from the main race a day later when his car failed post-race technical checks. And that set the tone for the next few months and, after the first six events of 24, his only Grand Prix result better than seventh place was the fifth he managed at the Bahrain Grand Prix. He has found his feet a little more since the start of the European season and has finished fourth in a Grand Prix on three occasions. But the podium still eludes him, while his ultimate ambition of winning an eighth F1 title in red will require a significant improvement in results next year. At times, the disappointment has got to Hamilton who has often pointed the finger at himself for a lack of performance. But he has also produced some punchy lines, particularly over the radio which has raised questions over the state of his relationship with new race engineer Riccardo Adami. Last time out at the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari introduced an upgraded new rear suspension which helped team-mate Charles Leclerc to record a fifth podium of the year. In contrast, Hamilton finished seventh at Spa-Francorchamps and said after the race that his car felt "the same as before". In the eyes of Ralf Schumacher, it is a weakness of Hamilton that he struggles to adapt to change as well as some others on the grid. Speaking on a German-language podcast, the six-time F1 race winner also criticised the Brit for some of those comments he makes at times which he believes increases the pressure. Schumacher said of Hamilton: "Lewis just finds it harder to cope with changes – he's simply more sensitive in that regard. Perhaps this new rear axle at Ferrari also unintentionally suits Leclerc's driving style better. We'll have to wait and see in the next few races. "It's a bit of a tragedy and Hamilton sometimes makes inappropriate comments. Then to deliver a weekend like the one at Spa is, of course, unfortunate. But I would give him a little more time."

McLaren look certain to win both Formula 1 championships this year with the teams' title all-but sewn up and Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri duelling for individual glory Lando Norris is desperate for Formula 1 glory – but insists he is not willing to do anything to win. History is littered with World champions like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna who were not afraid to bend rules in the pursuit of success. Title-chasing McLaren duo Norris and Oscar Piastri have kept it clean so far this year, apart from a collision in Canada for which the Brit immediately accepted fault. Norris is often self-critical when he makes mistakes and that, he says, proves how much he wants to win. But he said: "I get upset sometimes and I get disappointed and I get angry at myself, and I think that shows just how much I care about winning and losing. But that doesn't mean I need to take it out on Oscar. I just don't get into those kind of things. "He is the guy I want to beat more than anyone else but, if I don't beat him, then that's just because he has done a better job. I will do it the way I believe is best for me, and just because one person did it a few years ago, it doesn't mean you have to do that too." Norris was quicker than Piastri in both practice sessions at the Hungaroring on Friday as McLaren dominated proceedings. Ferrari showed decent pace with Charles Leclerc third in both hours while Lewis Hamilton also looked strong on a track where he has won eight times before. In contrast, Max Verstappen struggled for pace and was only 14th on the timesheets by the end of FP2. Yuki Tsunoda was ninth, marking the first time the Dutchman has been beaten by a Red Bull team-mate in any practice session this season. Verstappen spent much of that second hour of running complaining about his machine. "I don't know what's going on, I can't get any balance," he complained at one point, while also stating in other radio messages that the car was "undriveable" and that it was "like driving on ice". He is third in the drivers' championship but 81 points adrift of leader Piastri. That would be a huge gap to overhaul but, still McLaren team principal Andrea Stella is refusing to rule the four-time World champion out of the fight. The Italian said: "I only agree with mathematics, so once mathematics tells us that is the case, then I will change my answer. I would not exclude Max, for instance, being in the game, so we are very wary. We remain concentrated, but we want to put our drivers in a position to sustain their quest until the end of the season." Fernando Alonso missed the first practice session of the day, citing back pain, with Brazilian reserve driver Felipe Drugovich filling in. But the Spaniard, 44, was well enough to drive in FP2 and was fifth fastest, one place behind Lance Stroll as Aston Martin showed encouraging pace.
