BBC Death in Paradise star Ralf Little 'felt like a failure' after he took a series of bar jobs while his acting career was 'in limbo'. Ralf was cast as teenager Antony Royle in hit sitcom the Royle Family in 1998.
While the role catapulted Ralf into the spotlight, he says it took a 'few months' before he adjusted to his newfound fame. During that time he says he would attend auditions and even took a number of other jobs with his then girlfriend.
On The Two Pints Podcast with fellow Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star Will Mellor, Ralf admits he struggled with both bar jobs he took on after landing his breakout role. He made the revelation after Will asked if he had ever had a 'normal' job.
Ralf, 45, replied: 'I had two normal jobs. I did one for two weeks and went f**k this, this is awful. When I was 18 we filmed the first Royle Family and it had come out, but there was a few months before the gears of reality sort of clicked into place where I was in limbo.
'Suddenly I had to be brought into auditions. I was alright, I'd saved some money and was going to be okay for a little while, but I had a girlfriend at the time.

'I was 18, she was 17, and she worked as a waitress at the local Brewer's Fayre and basically, for moral support, because I was bored during the day when she was at work, I said, 'I'll get a job at the Brewer's Fayre, I'll work behind the bar/wait' so I was a waiter for two weeks at the Brewer's Fayre and I hated it. Doing a real job sucks.'
Ralph however says he quit the job after just three shifts. He went on to explain that his girlfriend then decided to take on a job at the home ground of Bolton Wanderers - then known as the Reebok Stadium - prompting Ralf to follow.
He continued: 'I did two home games as a barman in the players' lounge at the Reebok Stadium. You'd have thought it was cool but I'll tell you this, Premier League players don't tip.
'I got one, occasionally I'd get, 'Round that up' and someone has paid 95p for a glass of Coke, so I'd get 5p. Very occasionally I'd get a fiver.'
Ralf says he started to feel 'weird' working behind the bar when the Royle Family exploded in popularity. He explained: 'The Royle Family had come out at this point and it felt very awkward working behind that bar.

'Occasionally, very occasionally, I would get recognised. And this is that weird thing where people go, 'God why aren't you working anymore', from 18 years old I'm working behind the bar and I've come in and everyone is like, 'Oh this is the biggest show on TV, why are you working behind a bar?'
'I wasn't embarrassed to be doing an honest job but when people come and ask you in that tone of voice like, 'Why are you such a failure?' [That's what] It felt like.'
Ralf starred in the Royle Family for 22 of the show's 25 episodes. In 2020 he was cast as DI Neville Parker in Death in Paradise, remaining on the show until 2024.

Joanna Page addresses 'difficult' family dilemma in bid to quit England for life in Wales In recent months Joanna has spoken at length about the end of Gavin & Stacey and her feelings about her future career and where she wants to take her family Joanna Page has talked about expanding her family (Image: ITV) Actress Joanna Page has discussed a personal dilemma following the end of Gavin & Stacey and how she feels about potentially moving her family back to Wales. The 48-year-old actress admitted that she had the thought after taking up surfing and feeling incredibly invigorated by the experience, leading to thoughts about whether she should move her away from England. Joanna, together with husband James Thornton, whom she married in 2003, has four children, named Eva, Kit, Noah, and Boe. Speaking about the experience with woman&home, Joanna recalled: 'Over the summer, I did my first-ever surfing lesson in Wales. I came home so invigorated, I wanted to move to Saundersfoot, thinking, 'It's about time I went back to Wales. I want to surf and live on the beach.' 'Then trying to put that into action with four children who've never lived in Wales and are very settled into their school is difficult! Now I just want to continue surfing whenever I can. It's good for the mind as well as fitness.' Alongside talking about moving her family west, Joanna also admitted that she has at times considered adopting another child. Despite having her 'tubes tied,' she has discussed the idea with James because she still feels very maternal. Article continues below Joanna explained: 'I've been thinking about fostering or adopting. It's something I've chatted about with James because I'm still very maternal, and it's something that I would think about in the future.' Joanna has also discussed a potential move back to Wales (Image: BBC) This isn't the first time Joanna has talked about a move from England to Wales. Earlier this year, whilst appearing on her BBC One show, Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea, she admitted that she had discussed it with James. During the programme she said: 'It's made me think, why am I not living by the sea? I've already spoken to James and I've said to him, 'that's it, I'm done.' 'I had to move to England to go and be in drama school and I've lived there ever since. It's time. It's time to go home! I am from the sea, I'm from the sea, and I need to be back here… 'I am so excited to go back home and see everybody, and just to bring both the old me and the new me back home, and just go, 'come on! Let's live by the sea, let's do yoga on the beach' – that's what I want to do now.' Ruth Jones and Joanna Page As well as discussing how she feels about potentially adopting, Joanna also talked about how liberated she felt being away from her children whilst filming the final Gavin & Stacey episode. She said: 'Every night, I was in bed by 10.30pm because I was so excited to have a hotel room and bed to myself… I'd climb into bed, lie on my back and spread out. It was heaven! Article continues below 'I was away from the children and wasn't being Mum, having responsibility for everyone and just doing all the cooking. 'Mentally, I created some space to relax and have a bit of time for myself to breathe and sleep. That made me feel really quite good, coming home and feeling that I'm not just Mum, I'm Jo as well.' Joanna is due to appear on Pointless Celebrities this evening at 7.35pm on BBC One.

Wayne Rooney clocks in for first Match of the Day shift after Man United and England legend landed '£800,000' BBC deal to become regular on the show
Wayne Rooney was pictured arriving for his debut appearance on Match of the Day at BBC 's studios on Sunday. Rooney turned up at 10:30am to formally kick off his new role as a regular pundit for the broadcaster. The former Manchester United and England captain is believed to have signed a lucrative deal worth around £800,000 a year to join the iconic football highlights programme. Arriving at the dock10 studios in MediaCityUK, Salford, Rooney looked confident as he walked past photographers and into the Match of the Day production hub. Rooney's transition from management to broadcasting comes after spells at Plymouth Argyle, Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City. The 39-year-old has been out of a job since leaving Argyle by mutual consent on New Year's Eve after a challenging seven-month spell in charge. Rooney has made no secret of his enjoyment of punditry since stepping back from coaching, occasionally appearing on Amazon Prime Video for Champions League coverage last season. Speaking to talkSPORT in June, he appeared to hint that his immediate future would involve more media work than management. He told the radio station: 'Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. I'm enjoying it. So, that's where I'll be.' Rooney's switch also comes as Match of the Day move into a new era following Gary Lineker's controversial departure. Lineker confirmed his departure from the BBC in May and 'apologised unreservedly' after being accused of anti-semitism by sharing a someone else's social media post. The England legend left the BBC without a pay-off from his £1.4million salary while he, Shearer and Micah Richards have continued to work together on the hugely popular 'The Rest is Football' podcast. Lineker presented Match of the Day since 1999, with his 26-year reign making him the longest presenter in the show's history.

Who are the Match of the Day presenters and pundits for the 2025/26 season?
AS the Premier League kicks off again, it's time to get to know a new roster of presenters helming the Saturday evening highlights on Match of the Day. This will be the first series of the show without Gary Lineker, who made his final appearance as Match of the Day host back in May. Who is replacing Gary Lineker on Match of the Day? The BBC announced in January that the new Match of the Day hosts would be Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan. 2 BBC Sports mainstay Logan is a household name from her work presenting Sports Personality of the Year, as well as regularly standing in for Gary Lineker on Match of the Day. Cates is best known for her coverage of the Premier League for Sky Sports, while Chapman will be familiar to viewers for his long-running position as a rugby league presenter at the BBC. The three stars will share the presenting duties across the weekends, with Match of the Day 2 now rebranded to just Match of the Day. Chapman is hosting the opening MOTD of the season on Saturday night, with Logan on the Sunday night. Who are the Match of the Day pundits? Wayne Rooney has joined the MOTD set up for punditry duties. The ex-England captain, 39, netted a huge two-year deal and will be officially unveiled this month. Rooney is also signed up as a panellist for the BBC's 2026 World Cup coverage from the US, Mexico and Canada. The Premier League's record goalscorer Alan Shearer joins Rooney on his official debut show. While Joe Hart and Danny Murphy will be the pundits alongside Logan on Sunday's show. Why did Gary Lineker leave Match of the Day? Gary Lineker announced he was stepping down from the BBC in November 2024, after over 25 years with the broadcaster. It was initially reported that Lineker would present the BBC's FA Cup and 2026 World Cup coverage as a 'farewell', but he was then sacked from the BBC entirely following an antisemitism row earlier this year. After facing criticism for posting a cartoon that represented supporters of Israel as rats, Lineker stated that "stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action." Will Lineker do any presenting on other shows? Gary Lineker is now set to front game show The Box on ITV. Originating in Norway, the format involves celebrities being trapped in boxes and having to complete daring challenges. Gary will also be continuing his work with his podcast company Goalhanger Productions, where he fronts The Rest Is Football with fellow Match of the Day hosts Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.
