One unconscious, several missing after yacht, cargo ship collide off Japan
The captain of a 492-tonne gravel carrier reported to the Japan Coast Guard that it collided with a yacht close to Hoto island in Japan's southern Oita prefecture, coast guard spokeswoman Nanaka Yoshida told AFP.
'We discovered one person at around 10am (01:00 GMT) and passed them over to emergency services,' she said, adding they had been taken to hospital.
Public broadcaster NHK and other local media said the person pulled from the water was unconscious.
The coast guard is continuing the search for several others who were supposed to be on board the yacht, 'but we don't know the details of the yacht or how many were on board', she said. — AFP

COPENHAGEN, Aug 16 — One person was killed and several others injured in Denmark yesterday in a collision between a train and a farm vehicle, police said. The accident happened near Bjerndrup, in the southwest of the country, according to a police statement. Police did not give details on the seriousness of the injuries, but did say that two people had been flown from the scene by helicopter. The national rail agency Banedanmark wrote on X that the collision occurred at a railway crossing. (EPA Images pic) TOKYO : A hiker attacked by a wild brown bear was found dead in northern Japan today, officials said, a day after the bloody encounter that reportedly saw him dragged into a forest. The hiker in his 20s tried to fight off the large animal but was pulled into the nearby woods with his legs bleeding profusely, local media outlets including the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said. The man was attacked while walking a trail on Mount Rausu on the northern island of Hokkaido yesterday morning, a local police spokesman told AFP. This afternoon, he was found and taken to a hospital where he was officially pronounced dead, according to a Hokkaido government official. Hunters also caught and killed a bear near the trail, an official working for Shari town – where the mountain is – told AFP. DNA analysis will be conducted to determine whether the bear was responsible for the victim's death. A wallet containing a card that bore the man's name was found near the scene of the encounter in the northeastern part of Hokkaido, according to media. A torn, bloodied shirt believed to be his was also found today, with nearby trees and soil dotted with traces of blood, Kyodo news agency said, quoting police. Among other discovered items were a watch, a hat and what appeared to be tear gas, Kyodo said. The number of brown bears in Hokkaido fell year-on-year in 2023 for the first time since 1991, according to estimates released this month. There were about 11,600 at the end of 2023, down 500 from a year earlier. The Hokkaido government cited unprecedented hunting of brown bears, with a record 1,804 caught in the 12 months to March 2024.

(Philippine coast guard/AP pic) BEIJING : China's defence ministry accused Philippine coast guard vessels today of 'dangerous manoeuvres' in response to reports of a collision earlier this week between two Chinese vessels near Scarborough Shoal in the disputed South China Sea. The Philippine vessels' actions 'seriously endangered the safety of Chinese vessels and personnel', ministry spokesman Jiang Bin. Jiang neither confirmed nor denied that there had been a collision involving two Chinese vessels on Monday. 'We demand that the Philippine side immediately stop its infringing and provocative rhetoric and actions,' Jiang said. 'China reserves the right to take necessary counter-measures.' The Scarborough Shoal has been a major source of tension in what is a strategic conduit for more than US$3 trillion of annual ship-borne commerce. Footage from the Philippine coast guard (PCG) showed a Chinese coast guard ship trailing the PCG vessel before a Chinese navy ship suddenly cut across the path of the other Chinese ship, colliding with it and damaging the forecastle of the coast guard vessel. It was the first known crash between Chinese vessels in the area. The Philippines today said it bore no responsibility for the collision. 'It was an unfortunate outcome, but not one caused by our actions,' Manila's foreign minister Theresa Lazaro said in a statement. The Philippine coast guard deployed three vessels on Monday to deliver supplies for Filipino fishermen in the Scarborough Shoal before the collision took place, Manila said on Tuesday. The confrontation was the latest in a series of incidents amid a period of heightened tensions between Manila and Beijing over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. A 2016 ruling of an international arbitral tribunal voided Beijing's sweeping claims in the region, saying they had no basis under international law, a decision China rejects.
