Juuso Parssinen of Rangers scores fancy goal for Finland at World Championships

Yahoo20-05-2025

Juuso Parssinen continues to make a positive impression and play a big role for Finland at the 2025 World Hockey Championships. The New York Rangers forward added to his impressive play at the tournament Saturday when he scored a highlight-reel goal off the rush in a 2-1 win against Latvia.
Parssinen made a slick between the legs play at high speed approaching the Latvia net early in the second period. He appeared to be trying to pass to an onrushing teammate, but caught a break when the puck hit the skate of a Latvian defenseman and deflected into the net to give Finland a 1-0 lead at 7:37 of the second period.
That was Parsinnen's only shot on goal Saturday, but he made it count. He also won six of 10 face-offs and logged an even 10 minutes TOI.

The 24-year-old now has four points (three goals, one assist) in five games for Finland, which has won four of five. Parssinen's first two goals in the tournament were game-winners, and he's plus-6 so far.
His goal Saturday is quickly becoming a go-to highlight on social media. But that's nothing new for Parssinen. He blew it up a couple years ago when he scored this between-the-legs beauty for the Nashville Predators in overtime against the Minnesota Wild.

This is the potential the Rangers see in Parssinen, whom they acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on March 1 in the Ryan Lindgren trade. It's, in part, what led the Rangers to sign Parssinen to a two-year, $2.5 million contract a couple weeks ago.

Parssinen was actually scratched for more games (12) than he played (11) with the Rangers after the trade. When he was in the lineup, Parssinen skated in the bottom six, both at center and on the wing. He won 40.3 percent of his face-offs in limited opportunity. The Rangers had only a 28.57 percent expected goals share when Parssinen was on the ice 5v5, per Natural Stat Trick, and were out-chanced by a whopping 77-21 margin with him on the ice.
But Parssinen came alive offensively late in the season, with five points (two goals, three assists) in his final three games. And he's carried that momentum into the World Championships.
Can he bring it consistently? That's always been the question for the talented forward, who offers versatility with the ability to play center or on the wing. Even at the Worlds, it hasn't been all good. Parssinen was demolished at the face-off dot prior to Saturday's much better showing.
Next season will give the Rangers a better idea if they have an extra depth forward on their hands or an emerging young talent ready to take the next step.

Marco Sturm hired as new head coach of Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins have hired Marco Sturm to be the team's next head coach, general manager Don Sweeney announced Thursday morning. Sturm, who played five seasons in Boston during his NHL career, will formally be introduced by the Bruins at a press conference next week. Boston was the last team to fill its head-coaching vacancy this offseason. Sturm will be the 30th head coach in Bruins history. He takes over a team that went 33-39-10 under Jim Montgomery and Joe Sacco last season, and missed the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. "Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively," Sweeney said in Thursday's release. "We were also looking for a communicator and leader – someone who connects with players, develops young talent, and earns the respect of the room. Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion. His path – playing for multiple NHL teams, coaching internationally, and leading at both the AHL and NHL levels – has shaped a well-rounded coach who's earned this opportunity. "As a former Bruin, he understands what this team means to the city and our fans," Sweeney continued. "We're embracing a new direction with Marco behind the bench and are confident his energy, standards, and commitment to a competitive, hard-nosed brand of hockey reflect exactly what Bruins hockey should be." Who is Marco Sturm? Bruins fans are familiar with Sturm from his playing days, when he spent five of his 14 NHL seasons in Boston. He arrived in the blockbuster Joe Thornton trade in 2005, and had 106 goals and 87 assists over 305 games for the Bruins. His biggest goal for Boston was a game-winner in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, lifting the Bruins to a 2-1 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Kings, and the Vancouver Canucks during his career, and finished with 242 goals and 245 assists over 938 games. While he has no head-coaching experience at the NHL level, the 46-year-old Sturm has been coaching since 2015. He spent three years as the head coach of Germany's Olympic team, which included a silver medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics and trips to the quarterfinals in the Worlds. He was back in the NHL as an assistant for the Kings from 2018-22, before he was promoted to head coach of L.A.'s AHL affiliate. Sturm has spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the Ontario Reign, where he's compiled a 119-80-11-6 record and made three consecutive playoff appearances. Now he's tasked with turning around the Boston Bruins as he navigates the waters as an NHL head coach for the first time.

Could the Boston Celtics reunite with Robert Williams by trading Porzingis to Portland?

Could the Boston Celtics reunite with Robert Williams by trading Porzingis to Portland? Could the Boston Celtics reunite with big man Robert Williams III by trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Portland Trail Blazers? The Celtics have been looking for ways to get cheaper next season as an unprecedented payroll and tax bill will come due during a season star Boston forward Jayson Tatum will miss most or all of with a torn Achilles tendon. Porzingis has, for better or worse, been one of the names most often cited as a player the Celtics light look to move on from to such an end, and there is a chance that the Blazers could be enticed into a deal sending the Latvian big man to Portland in exchange for the Time Lord. If such a trade were helpful to both teams, what would it actually look like? The folks behind the "NBC Sports Boston" YouTube channel put together a clip from a recent episode of "Arbella Early Edition" to talk it over. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about what it might take to get Rob Will back in Boston.

Martin makes 'success' Saints admission in first Rangers press conference

NEW Rangers boss Russell Martin suggested his previous managerial jobs were more successful than his promotion-winning spell at Saints. But the 39 year old insisted he felt a connection with the supporters at MK Dons, Swansea and at St Mary's when he departed each job. Advertisement Martin has signed a three-year deal to take over at Glasgow giants Rangers and delivered his first press conference in post on Thursday. Having spent time on loan at Ibrox, Martin, who has been out of work since his sacking in December, believes he understands the expectations. "I wanted to take some time to really reflect and review on what we've learned as coaching staff and I've learned as a manager," said Martin. "When this job was suggested and even with a couple of other opportunities on the horizon these last few weeks, this was one I really wanted. Advertisement "We're here to win and we're here to do it in the best way we possibly can and also to help the club be sustainable with young players coming through. "At MK Dons it was about survival first and then building something where we could sell players on because it wasn't gonna be their end destination. "Swansea was very similar, the budget was heavily cut when we went there. I deemed them jobs with what the expectation of us was to be a success. "They were probably a bigger success than Southampton was. Their first year in the Championship was the first time we were expected to win. "We did and we did what we were expected to do to get promoted and then, of course, the challenge of the Premier League is very different. Advertisement "I don't think I've been the number one choice at any club I've been at so as a player from MK to become the manager is a bit of a surprise. "Swansea, they were linked with all sorts as they'd lost in the playoff final and then the budget was being cut and then we turned up from League One. "Southampton had been relegated from the Premier League so I'm sure there was all sorts of names mentioned when I was interviewing for the job. "But by the time we've left every club, I felt a real connection with the supporters, I felt they'd been really behind us - definitely the playing staff. "The end product might not click completely overnight but we have to find a way of winning whilst building and we really accepted that at Saints."
