Inter extend lead at the top with 2-0 win at Atalanta

Reuters16-03-2025

BERGAMO, Italy, March 16 (Reuters) - Inter Milan extended their lead at the top of Serie A to three points with a 2-0 win at third-placed title rivals Atalanta on Sunday as both sides finished with 10 men.
Inter moved to 64 points ahead of Napoli, who have 61 after being held to a 0-0 draw at second-from-bottom Venezia earlier on Sunday, while Atalanta remain on 58 points.
An intense opening half ended goalless, with Inter's Marcus Thuram hitting the upright and Atalanta's Mario Pasalic forcing goalkeeper Yann Sommer into a save from a header.
Carlos Augusto opened the scoring when he headed in from a corner nine minutes after the break. The hosts had midfielder Ederson sent off for two quick bookings in the 81st before Lautaro Martinez sealed the win three minutes from time.
Inter had Alessandro Bastoni dismissed in added time.

AC Milan in talks to sign second Arsenal star along with Oleksandr Zinchenko

AC Milan are plotting a double transfer raid at Arsenal as they look to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior this summer. Massimiliano Allegri, reappointed Milan boss at the end of May, is eager to rebuild the club's backline after a disappointing eighth place finish last season. The Rossoneri have already identified Zinchenko as a possible option to replace Theo Hernandez at left-back with the France international in talks with Atletico Madrid after turning down a move to Saudi Arabia. Gazzetta dello Sport report an emissary from Milan held talks with Arsenal officials on Tuesday this week to discuss a move for the Ukraine international, with the subject of a move to sign Kiwior also broached. With Malick Thiaw in talks to return to the Bundesliga to join Bayer Leverkusen, the Poland international has emerged as a leading target with Milan appreciating his versatility and experience in Serie A. Kiwior was signed from Spezia in January 2023, mainly operating as a back-up option for Mikel Arteta. But the 25-year-old stepped up impressively at the start of April after Gabriel Magalhaes was ruled out with a hamstring injury, filling the void alongside William Saliba. While Kiwior proved his worth to the squad, Arsenal are reportedly looking at other options at centre-half with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi among them. It remains to be seen whether Arteta is willing to let Kiwior leave north London. The versatile defender started Arsenal's last eight games of the Premier League campaign in Gabriel's absence, also ever-present in the Champions League quarter-final and semi-finals clashes with Real Madrid and eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain. Zinchenko meanwhile was limited to just five Premier League starts with Myles Lewis-Skelly emerging as Arteta's firm first-choice at left-back with Riccardo Calafiori also competing for minutes. More Trending Milan believe he will be available for less than €15million but his reported wages of £150,000-a-week could pose a problem for the Rossoneri. Kieran Tierney this week sealed his return to Celtic with Arsenal banking around £6million from Nuno Tavares' permanent move to Lazio. Napoli 'make contact' with Liverpool over Darwin Nunez transfer, but Man United star also features on 'Antonio Conte's three-man striker shortlist'

Napoli are reportedly targeting Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez for a summer move. The Reds broke their transfer record to sign Nunez from Benfica for £85million in 2022 but he is ready to leave Anfield after a lack of starting opportunities under Arne Slot. The 25-year-old scored seven times last season as Liverpool wrapped up the Premier League title and he is contracted until 2028. Saudi side Al-Nassr previously made enquiries to sign the Uruguay international in January and were prepared to offer £70m but Liverpool were unwilling to listen at that stage as their focus was on winning the league title. The Italian champions are now pushing for his signature as they look to become less reliant on Romelu Lukaku, and have made contact with the striker, according to Football Italia. Former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is looking to strenghthen his Napoli side as they look to retain the league next season and compete in the latter stages of the Champions League. The Naples outfit have also reportedly identified Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund or Udinese forward Lorenzo Lucca as alternatives. Hojlund's contract also does not expire until June 2028 with an option for a further year but his Old Trafford appears uncertain. The Dane cost United £64m plus a further £8m in potential add-ons when he made the move from Atalanta in August 2023. However, he has struggled to live up to that price-tag, managing just four goals in 32 Premier League games last season. Speaking after Denmark's 2-1 friendly victory over Northern Ireland on Saturday night, he told TV 2 Sport: 'I have a contract [until 2028], so I expect to play for Manchester United. 'I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. 'I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United. 'I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season.' Ruben Amorim's side are in the market for a new striker and will listen to suitable offers for Hojlund. Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is also being hunted by Napoli. The 25-year-old joined Chelsea's academy in 2007 and made his international debut on Tuesday night as England fell to a 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Chelsea slapped a £40million price tag on Chalobah in January, having valued him at £25m last summer. Asked about his future, Chalobah, who has also played for Ipswich, Huddersfield, and Lorient, said: 'For me, I just have to focus on the now, leave all the noise out there that is surrounding me and my future. Napoli are also closing in on a two-year deal for Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian will fly to Naples on Thursday for his medical and to take the formal steps needed to confirm his move from Manchester City. De Bruyne is leaving the Etihad Stadium after 10 years of legendary service, with his contract up on June 30.
