Sanskrit gets funds, crocodile tears for Tamil: MK Stalin slams Centre for bias

India Today5 hours ago

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticised the BJP-led Union government over its alleged bias in language funding, accusing it of favouring Sanskrit while neglecting Tamil and other South Indian languages. In a post on social media platform X, Stalin wrote, 'Sanskrit gets the crores; Tamil and other South Indian languages get nothing but crocodile tears. False affection for Tamil; All money for Sanskrit!'advertisementThe remarks come amid a growing political debate over the allocation of central funds for classical languages. Stalin's statement reflects the long-standing concern among Dravidian parties that the cultural and linguistic priorities of southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, are being sidelined in favour of promoting Sanskrit, which is primarily associated with North Indian heritage and the Hindu religious tradition.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has repeatedly asserted the primacy of Tamil, one of the oldest living languages in the world, and has often accused the Centre of paying only lip service to its preservation and promotion.- Ends

Pappu Yadav likens current political climate to ‘undeclared Emergency'

New Delhi: On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency -- widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy -- Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav strongly criticised the current political climate, likening it to an "undeclared Emergency." Speaking to IANS on Tuesday, Yadav took aim at the ruling BJP, asserting that the present situation mirrors the authoritarianism of the past, albeit without formal declaration. Attacking the ruling dispensation, he said that institutions like the "Supreme Court, ED, CBI, and Election Commission are all working at the BJP's behest. No one can speak now." Training his guns at the BJP on the issue of black money, he said that the BJP does not want to talk about real issues. "Just look at the BJP on its record of employment generation, have they delivered their promise on giving two crore jobs?" he asked. "What is the update on the handling of Agniveers? Our currency is going down compared to the dollar. Have you brought back the black money?" he told IANS. On speculation over Arvind Kejriwal's entry into the Rajya Sabha, Yadav accused him of prioritising personal ambition over governance. He further alleged that Kejriwal is desperately eyeing a Rajya Sabha seat and could even replace Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to fulfil his political goals. "He is obsessed with money and power. Corruption runs in his veins," Yadav said, calling Kejriwal the 'B team' of the BJP. Yadav claimed Kejriwal imposed elections in Punjab for selfish reasons and said the AAP leader now lives in a 'delusional world.' 'He made Delhiites suffer, failed to deliver on Lokpal, and now dreams of entering Rajya Sabha through the backdoor,' Yadav alleged. On the BJP's continuous attack on Congress, Yadav called Union Home Minister Amit Shah the 'Sankat Mochak' of the BJP but questioned his relentless attacks on the Congress. 'Every party is free to contest on their terms. But if you had taken the name of God as many times as you've taken the name of Congress, Nehru, or Indira, maybe God would have blessed you,' he said. Yadav reminded Home Minister Amit Shah of Indira Gandhi's contributions to the nation, calling her one of the most dynamic leaders the world has seen. "Atal Bihari Vajpayee had called her 'Durga.' Don't forget 1971 and her leadership. Yes, Emergency was dark, and people punished her -- but then people brought her back, too. Let the people decide,' he added. On the Iran-Israel conflict, Yadav accused the US of forcing a ceasefire. 'Iran is our historical ally, and we must introspect. Trump's actions have surpassed Hitler,' he said, warning that war is being used as a business model by global arms dealers.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha shared on X a media report which claimed that in just six months between the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the Maharashtra assembly polls, Nagpur South West — the seat held by BJP leader and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis — added 29,219 new voters. 'Media uncovered thousands of voters with no verified address. And the EC? Silent — or complicit. These aren't isolated glitches. This is vote theft. The cover-up is the confession," he said. 'That's why we demand the immediate release of machine-readable digital voter rolls and CCTV footage," Gandhi added. In a post on X, the Chief Electoral Office in Maharashtra said as informed by the Election Commission of India already, electoral rolls are shared with all recognised political parties. 'During 2nd Special Summary Revision-2024, which was taken up before the General Elections to Maharashtra Assembly-2024, the copies of draft and final electoral rolls of all 288 ACs were provided to representatives of all recognised political parties including INC (Dates of handing over the rolls to INC can be seen in the attachment)," the office said. 'Between draft and final publication of rolls, 19,27,508 claims & objections were received for consideration. As per law, appeal can be filed against wrongful additions or deletions in the Electoral Rolls. Only 89 Appeals were received," it said. Gandhi's remarks also came on a day it emerged that the Election Commission has formally written to him on his allegations of rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra polls, saying all elections are held by the poll authority strictly as per laws passed by Parliament and rules, and the entire exercise involves thousands of personnel, including booth-level agents appointed by political parties. In a letter emailed to him on June 12 in response to his article written in a leading daily, the EC has said the entire election process is conducted in a decentralised manner at the assembly constituency level, which involved more than 1,00,186 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), 288 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), 139 General Observers, 41 Police Observers, 71 Expenditure Observers and 288 Returning Officers (ROs) appointed by the Commission. 'We presume that any issue regarding conduct of elections would have already been raised through election petitions filed in the competent court of law (high court) by the INC candidates," it told the LoP in Lok Sabha. 'However, if you still have any issues, you are welcome to write to us and the Commission is also willing to meet you in person at a mutually convenient date and time to discuss all issues," the poll authority said. K'taka Home Minister Parameshwara says his statement was misunderstood, no dearth of funds in state

'I have not said like that, who said there is no money? I have defended the government, saying that we have presented a record budget….as someone said things jokingly during the speech, I reacted in a similar fashion, that's all,' Parameshwara told reporters here on Tuesday, when questioned about his statement. The senior Congress leader was clarifying the statement he made on Monday while addressing a gathering at Badami in Bagalkote district, where he had said that the state government doesn't have money. His comments were picked up by the media, and the opposition BJP too used it to target the government, alleging that the financial condition of the state has deteriorated. Bengaluru, Jun 24 (PTI) Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday clarified that there is no shortage of funds in the state government for any reason, and that his earlier statement has been misunderstood. Reiterating that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has presented a Rs 4.09 lakh crore budget, he said, 'I have said that there is no shortage of funds. Rs 22,000 crore has been allocated for irrigation in the budget. Allocations have been made for the five guarantee schemes in the budget, and instructions have been made to prepare an action plan for Rs 50 crore in every constituency. I said all of this in my address. When someone said something jokingly, I might have reacted.' 'I'm now saying officially that there is no financial distress in our government. I'm saying it very clearly. Sometimes, there may be a delay in the release of funds, as DPR and estimates have to be prepared before releasing money. There may be some delay in that; other than that, there is nothing else. There is no shortage of funds in our government for any reason. I'm making it clear. If anyone has misunderstood my statement, I'm correcting that,' he added. The Home Minister while addressing a gathering in Badami on Monday had suggested local MLA Bheemasen B Chimmanakatti to prepare a Rs 1,000 crore project for the development of the Badami town, which is of historical and archaeological importance, and send it to the centre, as the state doesn't have money. 'Prepare the project (for Badami's development) and send it to the Centre, we don't have money, Siddaramaiah doesn't have money now. We have given you (people) in the form of rice, pulses, oil,' he had said. PTI KSU ADB This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
