National Education Policy 2020 recommends leveraging digital platforms like online classes and e-learning resources to enhance education delivery. AI and automation are being used to engage students, offer real-time feedback, personalised content and even predict support to identify learning gaps early. With adaptive assessments and virtual tutors, school education in India, particularly, is becoming more responsive and student-centric than ever before.
How the Pandemic Sparked a Digital Learning Revolution
The sudden shift to digital learning during the pandemic was transformative, as it not only maintained educational continuity during school closures but also unlocked new possibilities. Online platforms and virtual classrooms quickly emerged as essential tools, encouraging educators to explore interactive and blended learning models. This rapid adaptation ensured that students continued to learn during a crisis and paved the way for innovative, more inclusive teaching methods that integrate digital tools with conventional approaches. A powerful mix of future-focused learning, technology, and entrepreneurial thinking has pushed us to rethink education.
Digital integration has transformed the learning experience, with innovative learning management systems and tools enabling students to progress at their own pace and explore diverse resources tailored to their interests. As the global landscape demands critical thinking, communication and teamwork, schools have shifted towards collaborative learning environments to nurture these essential skills. Complementing these advances, hands-on learning initiatives, such as STEM labs, coding boot camps, and entrepreneurship workshops, allow students to apply theoretical concepts to practical challenges, sharpening both their technical expertise and creative problem-solving abilities.
Transition comes with challenges
Many schools still struggle with inadequate digital infrastructure, making it difficult to implement modern learning methods at scale. Teachers, too, need continuous training and support to adapt to new approaches and deliver them effectively in real classrooms. Although, across India, educators are incorporating DIY STEM kits to create engaging, interactive lessons without relying solely on high-tech resources. These practical tools allow students to experiment with robotics and mechanics, making abstract concepts tangible. Initiatives like Digital India, along with affordable and customised EdTech solutions, are steadily transforming traditional textbook-based instruction into modern, interactive learning experiences. A notable example is e-Basta, which provides digital study materials and schoolbooks in the form of e-books, accessible via tablets and mobile phones.
Making our classrooms stronger, smarter, and more student-focused
Artificial Intelligence is transforming classrooms by providing real-time feedback and customising learning experiences based on individual student needs. The rise of hybrid learning models, further accelerated during the pandemic, and has made education more flexible and accessible, allowing students to engage from anywhere. Adding to this evolution is gamification, where interactive tools and apps turn lessons into engaging experiences, boosting motivation, participation, and long-term retention.
This approach enables personalised learning, allowing students to progress at their own pace using interactive lessons, animations, and adaptive software that target specific learning gaps. For example, if a student struggles with quadratic equations but excels at linear algebra, the AI will adjust future lessons to provide more support where it's needed and accelerate topics that have already been mastered. Data-driven assessments provide real-time feedback, helping educators refine their teaching strategies. Modern pedagogical methods such as blended and project-based learning further enrich the educational experience by making lessons both practical and enjoyable.
Looking ahead
Skill-based education in India is breaking away from the one-size-fits-all approach. Teachers now use interactive digital displays and regional content in local languages to support diverse learners, while data from assessments enables personalised remediation. Hands-on STEM learning is gaining traction through modular robotics and coding kits, encouraging practical exploration. To bridge connectivity gaps, preloaded tablets with adaptive software ensure continuity in learning, and structured peer collaboration via video conferencing fosters problem-solving and cultural exchange. While challenges like teacher training, infrastructure, and mindset shifts remain, many progressive schools are paving the way for a new era of holistic education. The goal is to move beyond rote memorisation towards nurturing confident, autonomous learners ready to thrive in an ever-evolving world, where learning is driven by purpose, curiosity and real-world application.

Private sector will drive defence manufacturing

India's defence sector is in the midst of a transformative shift. From being largely dependent on public sector undertakings and imports, the country is now building a strong and self-reliant domestic defence industrial base. The catalyst for this change is a bold policy pivot towards strategic integration of the private sector in defence production and procurement. As we look ahead to India's ambition of becoming a global defence manufacturing hub, it is increasingly clear that the private sector must not only be a partner, but a leader in this journey. This is a much-needed response to the limitations observed in earlier Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-dominated programmes like the Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas), which, despite eventual success, faced significant delays and cost overruns. The new model seeks to balance the strengths of DRDO's research capabilities with the execution muscle and industrial scalability of the private sector. India's defence procurement ecosystem has long been characterised by opacity, limited competition, and an overwhelming reliance on State-owned enterprises. However, over the past decade, the ministry of defence has moved towards a more transparent, market-oriented system. The announcement to develop the AMCA through competitive bidding must be seen as a natural extension of this evolving policy framework. For the first time, a high-value, strategically critical fighter aircraft programme is being opened to private sector-led development. This represents a higher level of confidence in the private sector's capacity to lead complex, end-to-end platform development. The private sector's share in India's defence production now stands at ₹32,000 crore and is about 21% of the total defence production. Start-ups are increasingly entering the fray with cutting-edge solutions in robotics, UAVs, surveillance systems, and AI-based battlefield intelligence. The success of companies like Larsen & Toubro, Bharat Forge, Tata Advanced Systems, and several others in supplying critical components, platforms, and sub-systems to the Indian armed forces and global OEMs demonstrates the readiness of Indian industry to take on higher-value and more strategic roles. What they now need is a consistent pipeline of projects, policy stability, and timely decision-making along with a significantly greater investment in research and development. India's target of reaching ₹3 lakh crore in defence production by 2029 is ambitious but achievable. While policy reforms have opened the doors for private participation in India's defence sector, realising its full potential will require sustained institutional support, streamlined processes, and deeper industry-government collaboration. Timely project execution will generate a predictable demand pipeline, enabling private firms to invest in long-term capacity. This will not only reduce cost overruns but also catalyse the emergence of domestic platform integrators with global delivery capabilities. Crucially, faster and more reliable execution of defence projects will enhance India's operational readiness and strategic autonomy, thereby strengthening national security. India can transition from being a technology importer to a global innovator by incentivising greater private investment in R&D through measures such as tax breaks and joint research initiatives. This shift would help build proprietary IP, attract global buyers and reduce strategic dependencies. Simplifying procurement and introducing a single-window clearance mechanism would reduce entry barriers and encourage a broader spectrum of players to enter defence production. While platforms like the National Single Window System (NSWS) have improved overall ease of doing business, a dedicated defence-focused clearance mechanism, with integrated MoD-specific approvals, is essential to streamline private sector entry into this highly regulated space. The resulting competition will boost efficiency and enhance quality in critical sub-sectors. Greater private sector participation in defence manufacturing will also unlock powerful spillover effects across the industrial ecosystem. As private companies ramp up production of high-tech defence platforms, demand will surge in allied sectors such as metallurgy, composite materials, precision tooling, electronics, and semiconductors, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing. This will drive India's industrial modernisation and enhance resilience of its manufacturing base. India is on the cusp of converting defence reform into an engine for broader industrial resurgence and global leadership. If India is to become a manufacturing powerhouse, defence is the first frontier. The internet, GPS, canned food, and the development of computers and digital cameras were all military innovations that made their way into everyday life. Mercedes-Benz India is betting on hyper-personalisation and electrification, with a focus on Indian technology, to enhance its appeal and drive growth in the country's burgeoning luxury car market , the company's top official said. The Germany-based luxury carmaker is offering a hyper-personalisation programme--the Manufacturer Program , including ' Manufaktur '--which allows buyers to customise their vehicles as per their preferences. 'Under this programme, 75 per cent of the customers who buy a car personalise it through the Manufacturer Program, for which they are willing to pay between ₹60 lakh to ₹1.5 crore,' Santosh Iyer , Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, told ETAuto . India's growing affluent customer base is giving rise to the trend of bespoke luxury vehicles. Beyond physical personalisation, digital features such as 'Routines'—an AI-driven car element based on customer habits—are reinforcing this shift. Following the same philosophy, the luxury carmaker today launched the Mercedes-AMG G 63 'Collector's Edition' at ₹4.3 crore. Only 30 units of the limited edition will be available exclusively to existing customers. Staying ahead with Indian technology This launch also marks the first Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India's (MBRDI)contribution to the Mercedes Benz limited edition model, underscoring the company's growing focus on local product development. MBRDI, headquartered in Bengaluru, is at the forefront of integrating advanced technologies such as AI and Gen AI in car manufacturing--from chip-to-cloud operating systems to customer-facing features. 'From the technical involvement across all aspects of engineering, we believe there's hardly any area of research untouched by Indian engineers today,' said Manu Saale, MD and CEO, MBRDI. With its growing engineering capabilities, India is playing a critical role in global automotive innovation that is expected to impact next-generation vehicles worldwide. Aligning with EVs With thegrowing adoption of electric vehicles in the country, the carmaker has kept pace with the trend. Mercedes-Benz India has reported a 73 per cent growth in luxury EV sales from January to May, outpacing the overall industry growth, said Iyer. This EV momentum is driven by top-end models such as the EQS SUV, EQE, and EQS Maybach. Currently, the company does not compete in the entry-level EV segment. 'The brand aims to maintain the DNA of performance (AMG) while offering the benefits of electrification (EQ), showcasing features like the 'G-Turn' in the electric G-Class,' the management added. On the growth front, the German manufacturer expects to report flat to single-digit growth in 2025, in line with earlier projections. This outlook is influenced by factors such as exchange rates, geopolitical concerns, and more.
