Indian Man Living In US Shares Dating App Struggles: "Considered Undesirable In The West"

NDTV13-07-2025
An Indian man's candid Reddit post about his struggles with dating in the US has resonated with many users. In his post, the user shared his frustrating experiences with dating apps and feeling invisible. He described dating as a "nightmare" and sought insight into the challenges faced by Indian men in Western dating scenes. In his post, he revealed that he rarely gets likes on dating apps despite using them for months. He cited an OKCupid study that stated Indian women in the West are least likely to respond to messages from Indian men, reflecting a broader trend of Indian men being at the bottom of the dating hierarchy.
"I'm an Indian living in the US, and dating has been a nightmare. I rarely get any likes on dating apps, even after months. Dating apps have us at the bottom of the totem pole, and an OKCupid study stated Indian women in the West are least likely to reply to a message from an Indian man. Why is this the case?" he wrote on Reddit.

The post generated a range of responses, with some users sharing similar frustrations and others offering different perspectives or insights. One user attributed the issue to stereotypes perpetuated by mainstream media, pointing to modern Hollywood movies as an example.
Another Indian-American man highlighted how some Indian men's crude social media comments toward women, particularly on revealing posts, foster negative stereotypes, unfairly affecting all Indian men.
He explained, "I'm an Indian guy (born and raised in the US). Indian men on social media (Instagram, TikTok, etc) all come off as thirsty and rude to girls. They post comments asking them horny things, and it's always the same type of person who is posting this kind of stuff. So naturally, girls start to think of Indian men in a negative way. Even though not all Indian men are like that. For example, just search for any white girl who posted a bikini pic or is wearing something slightly revealing. You will see so many Indian men commenting on it with weird and creepy comments. This puts the rest of the Indian men in a bad light."
A third said, "First of all, dating apps are not the best places to get dates. It's harder to stand out in a dating app."
A fourth added, "A lot of Indian men do have a bad reputation regarding bad behavior (especially towards women), not taking care of themselves and poor hygiene practices so naturally women may be turned off from this."

Gated communities as new civilisations

I live in an old-world apartment, where the lift has been creaking since the Bronze Age, and the watchman could put ChatGPT to shame. He moonlights as a caretaker and 'sunlights' as a plumber, and occasionally judges youngsters for bringing over their partners. When I first moved into my apartment, I wished my apartment were also posh and cutting-edge. But gradually, I have begun to warm up to the old-worldliness of it. Mine is the kind of apartment where a power cut makes everybody step out and check if their neighbours' power is gone too! But when I walk into a posh gated community, I feel like Govinda entering Mumbai in a David Dhawan movie. I stare up at the buildings, make way for zipping RC cars controlled by children, and unsuccessfully try to impress the Siberian huskies with undiagnosed bipolar disorder in Indian summers. Modern gated communities are self-sustaining microcosms by themselves. You will find a supermarket, gym, play schools, and even a temple inside. Which makes them a little bit like Hotel California. You can always check in, but you may never leave. It's like a country where you don't need a passport to visit, but they will ask for your Aadhaar card, visitors' OTP, and (if they don't trust the way you look) will even click a picture of you for safekeeping. These gated communities have their hierarchy, too. Right at the top are the richest people. They occupy the penthouses and the apartments with the best views, and where the traffic below looks like marching ants. In Middle-earth, you have the remaining flats. And right at the bottom, you have staff, security and blue-collar jobs on the ground floor. Of course, we all have to visit the nether regions of the world when we go to the basement and question all our life choices just to find our parking spot. This microcosm has its own governing body. The Ministry of Security – with the security folks with walkie-talkies, even though nobody is walking or talking. Then there is the Ministry of Culture, who handle Deepavali celebrations, New Year bashes, and occasional karaoke terrorism within the gated community. Then there is the Ministry of Propaganda, which is governed by the apartment secretary and president. The kids who grow up in these communities have friends who all belong to the same socio-economic class. They play posh sports like basketball, tennis, and mind games. The animals are all posh pets, and the language spoken is English – with an American slant. For someone who grew up playing on the streets, fighting off bullies and stray dogs every day just to play a game of cricket, I have mixed feelings about this upbringing. Of course, they live a sheltered, safe life free from any tensions from strangers and external threats. But I also wonder if they'd have benefited from exposure to a world outside their social circles, too. Of course, as someone who has never been a parent (to a child, pet, or even a plant), I have no right to determine the right way to raise a child. But I wonder if the kids sometimes want to break free from the compound. To run into a Kirana store, pet a stray dog and run around in the sun without SPF 50 protection on their faces. Maybe I'm just jealous. Maybe deep within, I want to live in a community where every birthday is celebrated with fireworks. Where the only real threat is a rogue Zumba instructor. Till then, I shall remain on the outside -– petting stray dogs, dodging potholes, and wondering if I could sneak into the organic mango festival this weekend! (The writer's views are personal)

Fact Check: Massive tsunami wave wipes out boats on the Russian coast? No, this video is from 2017

After an 8.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, tsunami warnings were issued in several countries. According to reports, nations like Japan and Hawaii have already been affected by unusual waves. Amid this, a video of a massive wave washing out boats and scaring people in a coastal area has gone viral on social media. Many shared the clip, claiming that this tsunami was triggered by the earthquake in Russia. advertisementThe caption of one such post read, "BREAKING: Massive 8.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Russia's Kamchatka Coast. A powerful earthquake has struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific. Waves have already reached parts of Russia and Japan, with more expected. Our hearts are with those affected. If you're in a coastal area of Russia, Japan, or anywhere under a tsunami alert, follow official guidance and move to higher ground immediately. Stay safe. Stay alert." India Today Fact Check, however, found that the video is eight years old and from Greenland. Our Probe Upon reverse searching keyframes from the viral video, we found an Instagram post featuring the same clip, dated June 19. The caption of this post read, "Fishermen caught off guard by Tsunami. Location: Greenland. Year: 2017." This makes it evident that the video is unrelated to the recent earthquake that hit Russia on July 30. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eddie the Eagle (@latenightjustice)Conducting a subsequent search with keywords led us to the same clip uploaded by a YouTube channel named 'Licet Studios' on April 9, 2021. The video description stated that a powerful tsunami wave hit Greenland's west coast, leaving several fishermen shocked. All three people seen in this video, however, escaped the wave just in time. The description further added that on the evening of June 17, 2017, a gigantic landslide occurred on the southern slope of the Umiammakku Nunaat peninsula, Greenland. Following the landslide, a tsunami wave reportedly hit the small village of Nuugaatsiaq, dragging four people to the sea. Per a BBC report, dated June 18, 2017, four people went missing from Nuugaatsiaq after tsunami waves swept away 11 homes in the village. Other reports noted that Greenland's National Day (June 21) — a day for celebrating the island's home rule government — turned into a day of mourning after the four missing people were presumed dead. The then-prime minister of Greenland, Kim Kielsen, had also offered his condolences at the time. advertisementThus, it is safe to conclude that the viral video is unrelated to the recent earthquake in Russia. - Ends Want to send us something for verification? Gurugram Resident's Garbage Dump Complaint Resolved On Same Day: What Is Swachhata App?

Frustrated by a week of uncollected garbage in their locality, a Gurugram resident used the Swachhata app and was pleasantly surprised by the swift resolution. A Gurugram resident, annoyed by the garbage dumped around their house, were in for a pleasant surprise after their complaint was acknowledged and resolved the same day. The resident shared that piles of garbage and discarded furniture had littered the area for a week, with little hope of a swift cleanup. This was when they learned about the Swachhata App through which they filed a complaint and did not expect anything to happen. 'For last 1 week, The garbage and waste furniture was lying down on the same place with no hope for cleaning. Yesterday I read about this swachhata app and with zero hopes I posted three complaints today morning, (sic)" the resident from Gurugram wrote on Reddit. 'In the evening, I came to the balcony, two of those spots were already cleaned and the last big spot where tons of garbage was thrown is being cleaned by tractor troller and workers," the resident further added. Gurugram Garbage Problem Gurugram commuters have reported that garbage accumulating along Golf Course Extension Road and Southern Peripheral Road severely disrupts their travel, with the unbearable stench making it impossible to even roll down car windows. But why all of a sudden? According to a Hindustan Times report, many workers and garbage collection staff have left Gurugram following a police verification drive that allegedly included random checks, detentions, and threats of deportation. What Is Swachhata app? Dirt lying around your house? Do not want to approach the local Municipal Corporation office? Simply snap a photo of the unkempt dustbin or a pile of waste lying around and post it on the Swachhata app, and the municipal team will address the issue within 24 hours. Additionally, an action will be taken against employees if your issue remains unresolved. A resident can also file complaints about the community toilet water or street lights. The civic-related issue will then be sent to the city corporation, and a 'sanitary inspector" will be assigned to the ticket you raised. How Can You File A Complaint? The Swachhata smartphone app is available on both iOS and Android for download. Once installed, the app allows you to report various local issues, such as uncleaned dustbins, dead animals, public toilet maintenance, or water supply problems. The app's description also states that the photo you submit will capture the location via GPS. You can also mention the nearby landmark or provide a complete address as per your discretion. The Swachhata app will also send you regular updates about the job done by the personnel. If the 'resolved" image is unsatisfactory, users can reopen the ticket to ensure the issue is addressed until a satisfactory resolution is achieved.
