Song celebrates Bradford life-saver train driver and wife
Charlotte, who said she had a long history of mental health struggles, was on her way to a night shift at work in 2019 when she decided to take her own life near a West Yorkshire train station. "I had convinced myself it was the best thing to do," she said. "Then I saw a train come round the corner, coming very slow and then stop... I thought 'this isn't how it was supposed to go'".Dave was able to stop in time and he got out and sat with her. "At this point I knew I needed to speak to this person and reason with them and try and make them aware... it's only up from here," he said.
Dave talked to Charlotte for half an hour until she agreed to get on the train.He dropped her at Skipton Station and she was taken to a police station before being reunited with her three-year-old son. She said: "Dave introduced himself and could not have been more compassionate and asked if I was having a bad day. "There was no judgment and he said we would sit here as long as it takes." Charlotte added: "He broke the crisis for me and I got to go home to my little boy and make him breakfast the next day."Three years later they married each other.
Ms Rusby, 51, said when she first heard Dave and Charlotte's story she was worried it was too big to turn into a song."There was immense pressure - I had never done such a thing to a timescale and then to perform to them [Dave and Charlotte]," she said.She said the song started to come together for her when it dawned on her that the most important part of the song was the "human emotion". Ms Rusby said she tried to "document Charlotte's journey" and tried to imagine her headspace when she sat on the train tracks. "What did she hear? Her own heartbeat, the train?"At the end it mentions their children and how important that link is and that 'love is just around that bend' - and it was, Dave was just about to come round that bend." She added: "What a beautiful thing fate is sometimes."
The song is part of BBC Radio 2's folk week with songs inspired by train stories to celebrate 200 years of UK railways.Dave and Charlotte listened to a live performance of the song - Light Beyond the Lines - with Ms Rusby's husband playing guitar. Despite being an experienced singer and songwriter, she said she found it "really scary" to perform the song in front of the couple for the first time.Afterwards Dave said: "The words from Kate were immense, they blew us away." Charlotte added: "I was sold in the first few seconds. I wasn't expecting to feel so emotional about it. "She captured everything." However, the day didn't get off to the best start, with Zoe explaining to listeners that her guests had been through "a dramatic morning", leading to "lots of people running around" behind-the-scenes trying to rectify the situation before they went on air. Welcoming the couple onto her show, Zoe shared: "I am thrilled to say that they've just about made it. But it's been a dramatic morning for our guests today, an awful lot has happened, but they're here now, it's Dooley and Clifton!" The documentary filmmaker admitted: "I've just been painfully predictable this morning." The problems started when Minnie refused to have a shower, with Stacey confessing she had to issue her daughter with a warning, as her face was covered in food. She recalled: "We've had a couple of meltdowns at about 8 o'clock this morning, which was really fun, and then we didn't want to shower, 'I don't want a morning shower', and I said, 'you've got ravioli around your face baby, they'll take me off you!'" The drama didn't stop there, as when Stacey, Kevin, and Minnie arrived at Broadcasting House, the BBC presenter "got stuck" while trying to make her way up to Zoe's radio studio. Sharing his version of events, professional dancer Kevin said: "They were all looking for Stacey's phone, because she lost her phone downstairs, and, as we know, Stace will not get in a lift and we're, like, on the top floor of the building here. "So they had to find some secret passage to get Stacey up the stairs, it's been a real journey to get here." Rylan Clark's Celebrity Gogglebox star mum Linda has admitted she's been suffering from a fresh injury, just weeks after being rushed to hospital with her son missing his BBC Radio 2 show to look after her Former X Factor star Rylan Clark has branded his mother Linda a "walking disaster" live on the radio, after she opened up about struggling with another health issue. Rylan, 36, was presenting his BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday when he started talking with his mum on the phone, who informed him that she had sustained an injury to her arms at home. She said: 'I hurt my arms, didn't I?" To which Rylan replied: "Yeah, I know you hurt your arm and it wound me up! Tell everyone how you hurt your arm." Linda explained: "Well, I was looking in the ottoman, and it's quite heavy, and the lid came down." Rylan added: "And you've cut all your arm." "Oh it did hurt", Linda replied, before admitting: "If it ain't one thing it's another, isn't it?'. In response, Rylan quipped: 'That's why you're like a walking disaster at the moment," to which his mum candidly agreed. This isn't the first time Rylan has provided fans with an update about his mum's health, after the duo became beloved by fans on Celebrity Gogglebox. Just weeks ago, Rylan announced that he would be absent from his BBC Radio 2 show because Linda had been rushed to hospital. At the time of the incident, Rylan told fans on Instagram: 'Mummy Linda isn't well sadly so I won't be hosting the show tomorrow. 'Thank you to the emergency team at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Will keep you updated as she's on the mend. She's a trooper.' Rylan was later able to confirm that Linda, 73, who suffers from Crohn's disease, was permitted to return home in time for her birthday on July 20. However, it isn't just his mother's health that Rylan has been open about in recent months, as he has also talked a little more about his own wellbeing. Speaking to The Times earlier this year, he discussed the health implications of his divorce from ex-husband Dan Neal in 2021. The Doctor Who actor told the publication during a conversation about his morning routine: 'The first thing I do is have a coffee, which has to be decaf after my heart failure four years ago. When I was getting divorced, I ended up in an ambulance twice "I have three or four cups to make myself function, and the only breakfast I have is a sachet of collagen mixed into a shake. Believe it or not, I'm very picky about what I put in my mouth; I like a tropical one." Rylan previously spoke about his struggles back in 2022, soon after his divorce from Dan. He told an audience at the Royal Festival Hall: "There were weeks that I couldn't speak. That sounds ridiculous because I can talk for England. 'My mum was genuinely concerned at one point that I'd had a stroke. It was like my body had shut down. 'Twice last year I ended up back in an ambulance because my heart had failed, and it was really strange because I just remember for a couple of weeks going, 'My heart hurts.'"

Rylan Clark has opened up about his divorce from ex Dan Neal and his struggles years after separation. Whether or not marriage was involved, the end of a relationship often leaves both individuals wrestling with grief, confusion and the task of healing. This was one topic former X Factor contestant Rylan Clark explored with his guest Vanessa Williams on his podcast 'Rylan: How to Be In Love', during which they shared their personal romantic experiences. Rylan was married to Dan Neal for six years, from 2015 to 2021. Whilst The Devil Wears Prada musical star Vanessa has been married three times, the Express reports. Her marriages include Ramon Hervey II, followed by Rick Fox, and most recently Jim Skrip. Interestingly both Rylan and Vanessa shared a similar timeline in one of their marriages, with Vanessa marrying Jim in 2015 and divorcing in 2021, the same years as Rylan's marriage. Reflecting on the experience, Rylan admitted he wouldn't want to go through a divorce again, describing the emotional toll as deeply painful. "I've had to do it once, and once was enough for me," he confessed. "You still get that weird sharp pain every now and again." The 36 year old continued: "It'll be something so stupid like, 'Oh that glass looks like...' and it's, like, that little. I couldn't imagine going through that twice. I don't know how I'd fare." Rylan has previously opened up about his marriage to Dan, with the BBC Radio 2 presenter sharing the emotional toll of his marriage ending. Rylan met Dan whilst on set for Big Brother's Bit on the Side, when Dan was giving his eviction interview in 2013. The pair hit it off instantly, with Rylan previously revealing to the Guardian in 2019, that he knew Dan was the one from their first kiss. He said: "The first one I had with my husband Dan in late 2013. I just knew." Their marriage came to an end in 2021, with Rylan admitting his infidelity was the reason for their split. He revealed in his 2022 memoir that he had been unfaithful years before and decided to confess in May 2021, not expecting that Dan would leave him. On the same podcast with Vanessa, Rylan delved deeper revealing how the breakdown of his marriage affected his romantic life in unexpected ways. He admitted: "I have found that, since the breakdown of my marriage, if I've gone on any dates or started seeing people, when I've had sex with them, I lose interest pretty quickly." "I actually got pretty worried about a year or two ago, because I thought, hang on a minute, I don't remember this from BM, I call it, before marriage." "I don't remember having sex with someone, or orgasming with someone, climaxing, and then after that thinking, 'Oh, I'm just not bothered now'."
