Gene Hackman Dead: Cause of Death Revealed for Oscar Winner and Wife Betsy Arakawa

Yahoo07-03-2025
Gene Hackman's death was caused by cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died of hantavirus, according to the chief medical examiner for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe home in late February. Although the local sheriff's department initially stated there was no indication of foul play, an affidavit released by New Mexico authorities later called the deaths 'suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.'

Deputies found Hackman and Arakawa, and their dog, deceased during a visit to the couple's house. Per the affidavit, 'the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened.'
Per our sister site Variety, it appears that Arakawa died on or around Feb. 11, while Hackman passed about a week later. Hackman had advanced Alzheimer's disease and severe heart disease; his pacemaker showed a cardiac event taking place on Feb. 17, according to the Office of the Medical Investigator.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, hantavirus is a potentially fatal virus spread mainly by rodents.
According to the warrant, maintenance workers found Hackman's body in the house's mudroom, with sunglasses and a cane nearby; an officer on the scene said it looked like he had 'suddenly fallen.' while Arakawa's body was on a bathroom floor. A counter in that bathroom also contained an open prescription bottle, with pills spilled out. Both bodies showed signs of decomposition.
A German shepherd was found dead near Arakawa in the bathroom; two other dogs were found, alive, on the property. Local officials did not find evidence of a gas or carbon monoxide leak in the house.

Netflix drops first trailer for one of my most anticipated dark thriller shows — and it's a bold twist on revenge

Every week, I like to scroll through Netflix's page for new and trending releases to see what's coming and what to keep on my radar. Months ago, I spotted the dark thriller series 'The Resurrected' in its coming soon section, with nothing but a mysterious cover image and a very brief synopsis. Even with just those scraps of information, my interest was piqued. 'The Resurrected' is a Taiwanese revenge thriller in which two desperate mothers resurrect the deceased ringleader of a telecommunications fraud ring to avenge their kidnapped daughters. It's not a premise I've ever come across before, as bringing someone back to life solely for revenge is a pretty wild hook. After months of waiting, we finally have our first trailer, along with a release date of October 9. That's pretty perfect timing for the Halloween lead-up. On death row, Chang Shih-kai (Fu Meng-Po) is strapped to the execution platform. His mother, Yueh-sin (Chung Hsin-ling), wears an unsettling smile as she looks on, while two women, Wang Hui-chun (Shu Qi) and Chao Ching (Sinje Lee), the relatives of his victims, watch with cold detachment. The execution is over in moments. For Wang, it brings no closure, only a sharper edge to her grief and fury. In a cruel twist, death feels less like justice for Chang and more like an escape. Refusing to let him slip away so easily, Wang and Chao perform a forbidden ritual that pulls him back from the grave, but only for seven days. In that brief span, Chang finds himself stripped of freedom and trapped in their unrelenting quest for vengeance, enduring both physical torment and moral reckoning. Of course, resurrecting such evil comes with consequences, and the trailer makes it clear that their revenge soon spirals out of control. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Along with the trailer and release date, we also got a longer synopsis: 'Set in the fictional city of Benkha, The Resurrected centers on two mothers united by hatred, seeking revenge for their daughters caught in a fraud and kidnapping case. 'With help from a mysterious goddess, they revive the deceased ringleader of the fraud scheme to punish him. Yet, despite inflicting relentless pain, their fury remains unquenched. As dark secrets unravel, their alliance is tested, forcing them to confront the limits of justice and their own morality.' Helmed by Leste Chen ('Eternal Summer') and Hsu Chao-jen ('Living'), this revenge thriller brings together a strong creative team. Leading the cast are internationally acclaimed actresses Shu Qi and Sinje Lee, making their first appearance in a Chinese-language Netflix series. The lineup also includes a special guest role from Golden Horse Award winner Alyssa Chia. Shu Qi said (h/t Variety): 'I'm really looking forward to it. When I first received the script, I felt it was a bold and groundbreaking story — not just for me as an actress, but also for Chinese-language series in general. I've already seen some rough cuts during dubbing, but when I saw the teaser, I still went, 'Wow!'' Sinje Lee also added: 'I've never encountered a female-driven story that's so intense, a little wild, and deeply emotional. It was such a thrill to be a part of it, and of course, I'm even more excited for the day we get to share it with audiences around the world.' 'The Resurrected' is already on my must-watch list, and I'm even more excited for the colder months to roll around. Being a Halloween lover, I'm always on the lookout for darker thrillers to dive into, and Netflix is delivering with this supernatural series dropping at the start of October. Even better, the first two episodes will be showcased at the 30th Busan International Film Festival this September, so we're bound to start seeing early reactions and buzz well before the official release. The premise alone has me hooked because it feels fresh compared to the usual revenge thrillers. The idea of bringing someone back to life for revenge is a bold concept and one I haven't really seen before. With such talented directors and actors involved, I'm confident it's going to be intense and emotional. Stream 'The Resurrected' on Netflix starting October 9. Stranger Things' Star Shares Wild Theory About the Spinoff

Stranger Things' Star Shares Wild Theory About the Spinoff originally appeared on Parade. Even though Stranger Things is coming to an end with the series finale set to premiere on New Year's Eve, Finn Wolfhard still has some ideas regarding what the spinoff series will be about. 'Like David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Sort of an anthology and different tones but similar universe or same universe,' Wolfhard, 22, said in a new interview with Variety published on Tuesday, August 5. 'I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don't even talk about Hawkins. Don't have any mention of our characters.' However, before fans get too excited, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife star clarified that no official announcements about a spinoff had been made just yet. '[Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer] were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I'm sure they do, and I'm sure it will happen, but there's nothing official,' he explained. 'I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there's one in Russia. Where else could they be?' RELATED: In 2023, Wolfhard revealed that he had previously been a little too close for comfort in his guess about what the Duffers had planned for a spinoff. 'I was like, 'But if you guys are actually going to do a spin-off, it should be this.' And then I said it and the Duffers looked at each other and looked at me and they were like, 'Could we talk to you for a second?'' he said during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. 'And then they pulled me off and they were like, 'That is the idea. Who told you?' and I was like, 'No one,' and they were like 'What do you mean? You just came up with it?' and I was like, 'Well, no, I just thought that that would be a cool way to expand.' It was really funny and they were like 'Okay, well… don't tell anyone.'' Granted, the Duffers could have easily changed their mind since then, but dedicated Stranger Things fans might want to brush up on their Twin Peaks lore just in case. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Stranger Things' Star Shares Wild Theory About the Spinoff first appeared on Parade on Aug 6, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 6, 2025, where it first appeared.

'White Lotus'' Sam Nivola worries 'old movie stars' with plastic surgery are taking roles from young actors

"It's not giving any space for the young'uns to move in and make a name for themselves," says the 21-year-old season 3 breakout. Sam Nivola thinks Hollywood is aging unusually in the 21st century — and that's not a good thing for his peers. The 21-year-old White Lotus breakout recently reflected on the state of the entertainment industry, specifically how older generations are clinging to their stardom and taking away lead roles from younger actors. "The old movie stars are getting plastic surgery, and they're looking younger and they're staying young," Nivola said in a new interview with Variety. "You have these really old people playing young roles. And it's not giving any space for the young'uns to move in and make a name for themselves." The actor, who played the youngest son in a wealthy North Carolina family on season 3 of the Emmy-winning HBO series, went on to explain how he thinks the film industry might be shaken without new marquee idols. "With all due respect to those people, one day they won't be here anymore, literally," Nivola said. "And they will have to create new stars." But Nivola offered one exception to the rule. "I think Timothée Chalamet is one of the best actors alive, and he's a total star," he said. "He's one of a very few examples I could come up with. But it's a different kind of movie star; he's not huge and jacked. He looks a little more like me." Nivola grew up in a household of thespians — his mother, Emily Mortimer, has starred in projects like The Newsroom and Lars and the Real Girl, while his father, Alessandro Nivola, has acted in films like The Brutalist and A Most Violent Year. He also lamented how the studio system has grown more financially conservative since his parents launched their careers in the mid-1990s. "They've Moneyball-ed the film industry!" he told Variety. "Everything is about data now — and trying to predict, to the nearest dollar, how much money a movie's going to make. It screws the idea of risk-taking." He pointed to one major victim of that paradigm shift. "Comedy is more about risk-taking than any other genre," he said. "It's rare to have comedies at all. It's been pretty dry for a little while." Nivola, who previously had roles in Maestro and White Noise, will soon star in one of those rare comedies: Driver's Ed, a new film from director Bobby Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber) that will also feature Ella Stiller, Alyssa Milano, Kumail Nanjiani, and Molly isn't the only White Lotus actor who has denounced certain cosmetic procedures. Aimee Lou Wood, who portrayed Chelsea on season 3 of the show, recently told the Run-Through With Vogue podcast why she avoids Botox. "I'm very anti-Botox," she said. "People can do whatever the hell they want, but for myself — because, you know, a lot of my career relies on these facial expressions — I can't start freezing my face. It needs to move."
