Deccan Herald6 days ago
New Delhi: The contentious Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar reverberated inside and outside Parliament on Tuesday with both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha failing to transact any business with Opposition MPs vociferously protesting against the Election Commission's move. The MPs also staged a protest at the 'Makar Dwar' of Parliament House with Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav among others joining them. .Over 100 MPs have signed notice to bring motion against Justice Varma in Parliament: Rijiju.Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha erupted into sloganeering as soon as the Houses assembled with Congress-led Opposition MPs shouting slogans against the SIR, ignoring appeals by Speaker Om Birla and Upper House's Deputy Chairman Harivansh. Both the Houses were adjourned for the day at 2 pm after two earlier adjournments during Zero Hour and Question Hour. All eyes were in Rajya Sabha as it was the first day after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation. Harivansh chaired the proceedings and informed the House that a vacancy has arisen in the post of Vice President while rejecting notices to suspend business to discuss SIR and inordinate delay by the government in publishing an ASI report Keeladi. CPI's P Sandosh Kumar's notice to immediately discuss the "unexpected and unprecedented" resignation of the Vice President was also rejected. Congress and other Opposition parties protested and demanded an immediate debate on SIR and rushed to the Well of the House, prompting Harivansh to adjourn the House till 12 noon. When the House reconvened for Question Hour, Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was chairing the proceedings, informed the House regarding a notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs conveying Dhankhar's resignation with immediate effect and adjourned the House till 2 pm.No business could be transacted at 2 pm also due to Opposition protest even as Harivansh called Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to move a motion for consideration of The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025, prompting the Chair to adjourn the House for the day.In Lok Sabha, Opposition refused to heed to the appeals of Birla and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House till 12 noon. Chouhan appealed to the opposition MPs to go back to their seats so that the House can take up questions related to farmers during the Question Hour while Birla intervened and told them that sloganeering and showing placards lowered the dignity of the House. The Zero Hour at 12 noon also could not function following protest with Jagadambika Pal, who was on the Chair, adjourning the House till 2 pm. When the House reconvened, the protest continued and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, "Double standards are wrong, first they ask for debate and then create a ruckus like this." "Only the rule under which discussion will take place will be decided. They come here carrying placards and violate the rules, I condemn this. They are asking for a debate and we are ready for a debate but they are not allowing the House to function," he said.

INDIA bloc holds meeting ahead of discussion on Operation Sindoor in LS

The floor leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc on Monday held a meeting to discuss the strategy for the second week of the monsoon session and the issues that need to be raised. This meeting comes as the Lok Sabha gears up for a 16-hour-long discussion on Operation Sindoor today. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has appealed to the opposition not to use language reminiscent of Pakistan. He said that there was a need to be mindful and maintain the dignity of the Indian armed forces. "I request the opposition, especially the Congress, not to do anything to harm India's interests and not speak Pakistan's language. We have to be mindful. We have to maintain the dignity of the Indian armed forces," Rijiju told ANI. The Union Minister stated that the opposition, including the Congress, should refrain from making any statements that could harm national interests. "The Congress and the Opposition should not say anything that could harm the national interests. Whatever they speak against India is used by the Pakistanis and India's enemies outside," Rijiju said, adding, "It was the wish of the people of India that the PM decided to launch Operation Sindoor through the Indian Army. Today, the Lok Sabha will take up the discussion on the Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack." Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to address the Lok Sabha at around noon. Lok Sabha is set to hold a special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor', India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. A fiery debate is expected to unfold in Parliament between top leaders from the ruling alliance and the opposition. Lok Sabha's listing for the Business for Monday, "Special Discussion on India's strong, successful and decisive 'Operation Sindoor' in response to terrorist attack in Pahalgam". Twenty-six civilians were killed in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India retaliated through precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Even since the monsoon session began on July 21, the Parliament has witnessed constant adjourments amid uproar over the demands of the opposition to push for a debate on issues of public importance, including the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack and the ongoing SIR exercise being carried out by the Election Commission in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The opposition has also demanded that PM Modi respond to the repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump of initiating a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor. The first week of the Monsoon session of Parliament was marked by major disruptions, including the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President.

They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses. On Friday, several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties, including Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, had held an unusual protest in the Parliament House complex against the voter roll revision in Bihar by tearing posters with 'SIR' written on them and putting them in a 'disposal bin'.
