Chelsea vs Crystal Palace live: Eze set to start amid transfer links as hosts eye Premier League title charge
Chelsea kick off a Premier League campaign in which they may have aspirations of a title challenge as Crystal Palace make the short trip across London on the opening weekend. Enzo Maresca and his squad enjoyed a successful start to the summer, winning an expanded Club World Cup and making a number of intriguing signings to bolster a team that tailed off a little in the Italian's first year in charge. Can they sustain a title tilt this time around or will the extra rigours of their American campaign show? Certainly there is no shortage of forward talent at their manager's disposal with Joao Pedro and Liam Delap both brought through the door. It's been a strange summer for Crystal Palace, meanwhile, with the unadulterated joy of FA Cup triumph followed by the strange feelings caused by their demotion out of the Europa League. A continental adventure may still be on the way but Oliver Glasner will first be focussed on a strong start domestically amid speculation that some of the key members of his squad could be seeking pastures new. Eberechi Eze is nearing a move to Tottenham, it seems, but may feature. Chelsea vs Crystal Palace live A busy opening weekend of Premier League action continues with a London derby, Crystal Palace making the short trip across the city to Stamford Bridge to meet a Chelsea side harbouring title hopes after Club World Cup success. Kick off is at 2pm BST. Harry Latham-Coyle17 August 2025 09:52

Gary Lineker's telling six-word response to new-look Match of the Day
Match of the Day returned to screens on Saturday evening for the first time since Gary Lineker's exit from the programme but the former England man did not remain too far away Gary Lineker has performed a dramatic U-turn on his claim he wouldn't watch Match of the Day by now suggesting he 'can't miss' it. The former England striker saw his long spell hosting the BBC programme ended last season following online controversy. And the programme returned to screens over this weekend with new joint host Mark Chapman taking the reins. Despite Lineker 's controversial exit, he made his feelings on the BBC programme very clear. He shared a video of Match of the Day's opening titles on his Instagram story alongside the caption: 'Can't miss Match of the Day.' Lineker's praise comes shortly after he suggested that he would rarely tune into the programme on Saturday nights. Asked for his thoughts on the new presenting team that includes Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, Lineker said: "I haven't seen them yet to speak to them, but I will do – they'll be fine and they'll do a great job. I've known them all for years, they're top presenters. "I'll be watching, but probably on iPlayer … I don't think I'll be watching on Saturday. Maybe the odd time, if I'm in." Having tuned in, Lineker would have been left smiling as his replacement Chapman kicked off the programme with a joke at his predecessor's expense. He said: 'The Premier League is back and Match of the Day is back. 'You may have seen and heard there's a big change to the show this season, and that is that Wayne Rooney has joined is us as a regular pundit. Some things don't change though, and Alan (Shearer) is still here.' Elsewhere, Cates has suggested that Lineker has yet to be in touch ahead of her respective debut, while she has not sought his advice either. She said: "No he hasn't got in touch and I haven't got in touch with him, but not because we're not avoiding each other. We just don't know each other. I know Gary to say hello to, We just don't know each other that well. "And I think Chappers was saying that Gary said: 'Well, why would I tell three broadcasters how to do their job?' which is very lovely of him because he was brilliant at the job and adored. And as much as he was a controversial character at times, any focus group that was researching will tell you how much he was adored in that role. "So I think from my point of view, the reason not to do it would be, I don't want to be Gary. I think there's a temptation to try and be someone else, and I think that you get a job because of yourself. And if then you try to be someone else, it can all just get a bit confused. "I don't need another thing to think about. I don't need to be sitting there thinking: 'What would Gary do? It's not a decision not to. It's just we don't have that relationship." 'We've just got to believe in ourselves'
Leeds winger Dan James says the players know it will be a "massive challenge" to stay in the Premier League this season, but is hopeful their "unity" will keep them a two-year absence, the Whites make their return to the top flight on Monday when they host Everton."It's massive because it's the best league in the world. The money spent in the Premier League is unbelievable, and the competition is only getting better every year," James told BBC Radio Leeds."You look at the past two seasons and the same teams that have gone up have come down. We've just got to believe in ourselves going into every game because it's going be tough."We've got the past two years of that unity we have as a team and [we must] take it into the Premier League."It is going to be tough and it's going to be be a challenge, but it's one we're all excited for."Fresh from signing a new contract with the club on Thursday, James will be hoping he can use his form from last term and Premier League experience to help the side this time."We want to establish ourselves as a Premier League team," he added."I want to contribute to the team as much as I can. I like to hold myself accountable, rather than other people doing it."
