Malcolm-Jamal Warner broke his silence on feelings towards Cosby allegations before his death

Daily Mirror7 days ago
The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who tragically died this week at the age of 54, broke his silence on the sexual assault allegations made against Bill Cosby
Prior to his tragic drowning death, Malcolm-Jamal Warner had finally broken his silence about his complex emotions regarding Bill Cosby, nearly ten years after the comedian faced accusations of drugging and sexually assaulting over 50 women.

Although Warner, who passed away this week aged 54, had remained largely silent about the claims, he recently shared his thoughts during an interview with journalist Jemele Hill.

Hill directly questioned Warner about how Cosby's criminal history had impacted his own income from The Cosby Show and whether he harboured any bitterness.

"No. I get how this business works. For one, and just that whole situation is so layered, man," Warner responded. "I can't defend him or his actions at all. But I also can't throw him under the bus completely."
Warner gained fame portraying Theo Huxtable on the beloved sitcom which ran from 1984 to 1992, reports the Mirror US.
He received an Emmy nomination for his performance in 1986 and also presented Saturday Night Live during the same year.

Cosby's legal troubles began in 2014 and 2015, when numerous women stepped forward with shocking sexual assault allegations, alleging the now-88 year old had drugged them before attacking them.
CNN reported that Cosby was convicted in 2018 on three counts of aggravated indecent assault and received a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars.

The conviction was subsequently overturned in 2021 by Pennsylvania's State Supreme Court, though Cosby's reputation had already been severely tarnished and The Cosby Show's syndication broadcasts had ceased. Despite the controversy, Warner insisted that the situation is more nuanced than the public often recognises.
"Like, it's so complex and it's so many shades of gray, that most people will never get," he explained.
In 2018, Warner told the New York Post, "I can understand why some people can't watch the show and enjoy it because of everything that's going on now. But, I think...there's a generation of young people who have pursued higher education or have started loving families because of the influence of that show.

"So it's kind of like, you can't discount its impact on television culture and American culture," he added.
Warner remained in the public eye throughout the years, featuring in sitcoms such as Malcolm and Eddie and taking on serious roles, most recently appearing in FOX's The Resident.
Beyond acting, he also secured a Grammy for Best Traditional RandB Performance for his hit track "Jesus Children" with the Robert Glasper Experiment featuring Lalah Hathaway, which was presented in 2015.
The actor perished tragically in Costa Rica whilst on a family holiday. Costa Rican National Police confirmed to ABC News that Warner drowned close to Cocles beach in Limon, Costa Rica.
They revealed that he was swept away by a rip current in the water and was discovered Sunday afternoon.

Sydney Sweeney cosies up to mystery man at lakehouse after ending engagement

Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles on Euphoria and the White Lotus, was seen spending time with a mystery companion recently following the news of her split from her ex-fiancé Actor Sydney Sweeney has sparked romance rumours after being spotted getting "close" to someone whilst spending time with family and friends. It comes after the White Lotus star announced the end of her engagement to her ex. ‌ Sydney, 27, had been in a relationship with her 'producing partner' Jonathan Davino, 42, for seven years. The Emmy nominee, who's starred in films like Anyone But You (2023), however confirmed in an interview earlier this year that they had separated, three years on from getting engaged. ‌ Over the weekend, she was spotted soaking up the sun at her family's lake house in Idaho. Photos from the occasion have sparked rumours of a potential new romance, with Sydney seen spending time with an unidentified individual. ‌ Photos, published by the Daily Mail, show Sydney in a black bikini whilst at the lake with family and friends. She was seen venturing away from the group to spend some time with her companion, including on a jet ski together. She's seen steering the watercraft in the photos whilst he sat behind her and held onto her waist. Sydney, who like him was wearing a life jacket, appeared to be in good spirits as she glided through the water at the property, with her seen smiling in some photos released earlier today. ‌ Sydney, who is said to have been blushing at times, was also spotted with her companion in another area at the lakehouse that featured a rope swing. Sydney was seen using the swing as the other person watched on nearby. Sydney announced that she was single in an interview with the Sunday Times that was published back in May. It came following much speculation over her long-term relationship with film producer Jonathan in recent years. ‌ They had been together for seven years and were thought to be getting married this year. Sydney and her former fiancé are said to have split up in January though and called off their wedding, which was expected to be in May. Amid speculation about their relationship earlier this year, a source told Us Weekly that Sydney is "extremely busy" with her career. Her latest projects include the Housemaid; the film adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Freida McFadden. ‌ The source suggested that Sydney's career added tension to her relationship with Jonathan. They said: "Things are also always tense between them when she is promoting a movie because she has to give her full attention to the project, and people always speculate about their relationship and Sydney being close to her costars." Euphoria star Sydney later confirmed their break-up in the interview with the Sunday Times. Speaking about being single, she said at the time: "I'm learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it."

Ghislaine Maxwell makes last ditch plea to quash her sex trafficking conviction

Ghislaine Maxwell is making a bid for freedom after she was convicted in 2021 on federal charges of trafficking young girls for her then boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell has made a last ditch plea in a bid to quash her sex trafficking conviction. ‌ British socialite Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 on federal charges of trafficking young girls for her billionaire paedophile boyfriend Epstein. But Maxwell is making a bid for freedom, arguing she is covered by a 2007 plea deal that Epstein reached with prosecutors in South Florida. ‌ The murky terms of the deal included that none of his accomplices would be charged in connection with his crimes. Her lawyers filed the appeal and urged the Supreme Court to overturn the conviction. ‌ "This case is about what the government promised, not what Epstein did," Maxwell's lawyers told justices on Monday. Monster Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison over her connection to Epstein's schemes to sexually abuse underage girls. The New York-based Second US Circuit Court of Appeals previously ruled against Maxwell, stating the terms of the agreement made with prosecutors in Florida was not legally binding in New York. The Supreme Court is due to debate the case and is expected to come to a decision in the autumn, CNN reported. ‌ Epstein pleased guilty to prostitution charges in 2008 and went on to be charged on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019. He died in his prison cell in 2019 with his death being ruled a suicide. The ongoing Epstein saga and Maxwell's bid for freedom have proved to be massive thorns in the side of Donald Trump's administration. Multiple members of the Trump administration vowed to release documents that his supporters believed contained the names of powerful people who were connected to Epstein and abused children alongside him. But a massive twist emerged last month after members of the Trump administration claimed not only was there no list but that Epstein had indeed died by suicide in his Manhattan prison cell. Both statements were met with fury by Trump supporters who believe it was part of a cover up by the administration, despite no evidence existing to suggest this. Mr Trump further added to the confusing narrative when he refused on multiple occasions to say that he would deny Maxwell a presidential pardon - essentially freeing her from prison should he wish to do so. Mr Trump previously told reporters: "Well, I'm allowed to give her a pardon, but I — nobody's approached me with it. Nobody's asked me about it. It's in the news about that, that aspect of it, but right now, it would be inappropriate to talk about it." But Mr Trump's comments have not been welcomed by everyone in his party with US House speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday he would have "great pause" abou granting a pardon to Maxwell.

Donald Trump demands Beyonce is ‘prosecuted' for supporting Kamala Harris

Donald Trump has bizarrely called for Beyonce to be prosecuted – over disputed claims regarding endorsements. Months after he claimed victory in the 2024 election, the President is clearly still smarting over the string of names that stepped up to endorse Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. In fact, months after theories arose on social media that Queen Bey was paid $10million for her appearance at a rally in Houston, the 79-year-old alleged that she broke the law by taking a multi-million-dollar pay cheque. Taking to Truth Social over the weekend, he fumed: 'I'm looking at the large amount of money owed by the Democrats after the presidential election and the fact that they admit to paying, probably illegally, $11million to singer Beyoncé for an ENDORSEMENT (she never sang, not one note, and left the stage to a booing and angry audience!).' The former TV star also called out alleged endorsements to Oprah Winfrey and activist Al Sharpton 'for doing absolutely nothing'. 'These ridiculous fees were incorrectly stated in the books and records,' he continued. 'YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PAY FOR AN ENDORSEMENT. IT IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL TO DO SO. 'Can you imagine what would happen if politicians started paying for people to endorse them. All hell would break out! 'Kamala and all of those that received endorsement money BROKE THE LAW. They should all be prosecuted! Thank you for your attention to this matter.' This isn't the first time that Trump has mentioned the sum, but he did not shed further light on where the number came from. In a radio interview with Mark Levin from February, he simply said: 'Somebody just showed me something. They gave her $11million.' However, CNN reports that there is nothing to suggest that the Texas Hold 'Em singer has ever received a sum of $11m related to Harris' campaign. It is unclear how the figure was calculated, and the White House has not yet addressed the lack of proof behind Trump's claims. Beyonce sent fans into a spin when she appeared on stage at a campaign event in Houston shortly before the polls closed, alongside Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland. 'I'm not here as a celebrity, I'm not here as a politician, I'm here as a mother,' she told the crowd. 'A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we're not divided. 'Imagine our daughters growing up seeing what's possible with no ceilings, no limitations. We must vote, and we need you.' According to CNN, spending records for the campaign do show a payment of $165,000 to Beyonce's production company, which was listed as a 'campaign event production' expense. This comes after a spokesperson for the campaign previously told Deadline that they were required by law to cover costs related to a celebrity endorser's appearance, but would not pay for the stars themselves. Senior advisor and spokesperson Adrienne Elrod insisted: 'We do not pay. We have never paid any artist and performer. We have never paid a fee to that person. 'There are laws that have to be followed that we have followed religiously on this campaign.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Campaigns are required to cover 'any ancillary costs' for a celebrity appearance, which could range from travel expenses to staging, food and drink. Although Bey has never addressed Trump's claims directly, her spokesperson branded allegations that she was paid $10m for the appearance 'beyond ridiculous'. Tina Knowles was also unhappy about the speculation, and took to Instagram to share that a since-removed post regarding the claims had been 'flagged as fake news'. 'It's called False Information,' she wrote. 'Sadly other platforms with a lack of integrity still have it up. The lie is that Beyonce was paid 10 million dollars to speak at a rally in Houston for Vice President Kamala Harris. 'When In Fact: Beyonce did not receive a penny for speaking at a Presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harrris's Rally in Houston. In fact she actually paid for her own flights for her and her team, and total Glam. 'They are not only lying and disrespecting Beyonce's name but they are trying to further discredit the power of our vice president! When does the lies and rumors stop? [sic].' Oprah was also forced to deny that she was paid to support Harris after it was claimed that she was paid $1m – a fee that actually went to her Harpo production company. More Trending In a comment under an Instagram post by the Shade Room, she said: 'Usually I am reluctant to respond to rumors in general, but these days I realize that if you don't stop a lie, it gets bigger. I was not paid a dime. My time and energy was my way of supporting the campaign. 'For the live streaming event in September, my production company Harpo was asked to bring in set design, lights, cameras, crew, producers and every other item necessary (including the benches and the chairs we sat on) to put on a live production. 'I did not take any personal fee. However, the people who worked on that production needed to be paid. And were. End of story.' Metro has contacted reps for the White House and Beyonce for a comment.
