Fuming Max Verstappen asks 'is this a trap?' in frosty press conference ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix - after making 'p***ed off' admission

Daily Mail27-06-2025
A fuming Max Verstappen asked a journalist 'is this a trap?' in a frosty exchange during a press conference ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, the world champion took exception to one particular line of questioning around his penalty points tightrope.
With 11 points already on his licence, just one more will see him reach the dozen needed inside a 12-month period to trigger an automatic race ban.
Verstappen was also grilled on his disciplinary headache a fortnight ago in Canada and the red mist descended when he declared he was 'p***ed off' at being constantly asked about it, insisting it was 'childish' to bring it up.
But the issue arose again at the Red Bull Ring when Verstappen was asked whether he would have to change his approach, and he delivered an awkward response.
'You're joking... Is this like a trap? I'm getting this question every single time, every weekend,' he said. 'Sorry, this is the last one. I have nothing to add.'
But he said he had nothing to add on the dilemma a fortnight on from his 'p***ed off' admission
Were he to pick up another penalty point this weekend, the four-time champion of the world would then be banned for the British Grand Prix.
However, should he manage to remain out of trouble, two of his points will expire ahead of the Silverstone showpiece, giving him much-needed breathing space.
Verstappen was hit with three penalty points for his hot-headed move into Mercedes' George Russell at 140mph during the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Only Kevin Magnussen has ever previously been banned.
Russell said: 'That's why you've got the penalty points there – if you keep driving recklessly, you'll get a race ban. You've got that in your own hands and it doesn't go without risk. If he gets his 12 points it wouldn't be unjust.'
Speaking in Austria, Verstappen was also quizzed on the speculation he may choose to walk away from Red Bull and join a rival. He has been linked with both Mercedes and Aston Martin despite being contracted until 2028.
Bluntly waving away the question, he said: 'Oh, I've had that question before as well in my life... You want me to repeat what I said last year?
'I don't even remember what I said last year, really. It's just driving on, trying to push the performance and then we focus on next year.'

Watch the full race replay here 7 minutes 22 seconds The conditions at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix on Sunday were probably best described as 'challenging' as the heavens opened before the start and then again at multiple points throughout the race. McLaren boss warns Lando Norris that team-mate Oscar Piastri will be 'even more determined for the races to come' after 'very harsh' penalty at the British Grand Prix

Glory today, trouble tomorrow? Lando Norris won the British Grand Prix to fulfil a childhood dream in front of 168,000 fans at Silverstone on Sunday, but he has been warned that the McLaren team-mate he beat, Oscar Piastri, will be incensed enough by his 'harsh' punishment to fire back in their two-horse race for the world championship. The win moved Norris within eight points of his Australian rival. It's 12 races down with 12 to go, and the pair seem in a class of their own after defending and quadruple champion Max Verstappen finished fifth at the rain-splashed race. Norris triumphed when Piastri was handed a 10-second penalty for 'erratic braking' under the safety car, a punishment Norris capitalised on to take victory, his first at his home grand prix. Piastri, the runner-up, felt he had been unfairly penalised, his comments jeopardising what had been a strangely harmonious arrangement between the pair. And their McLaren boss Andrea Stella, the supreme peace-negotiator, said: 'I have to say that the penalty was very harsh. 'There are a few things to review, but now the penalty has been decided, and has been served. We move on. 'I'm sure Oscar will use this motivation to be even more determined for the races to come and try to win as many races as possible.' Wind is gathering behind Norris three weeks after he crashed into Piastri in Canada, his championship hopes seemingly dashed, with wins in Austria and Britain, his first consecutive victories in a single season. Red Bull's Verstappen is 69 points adrift. Norris cut his nose in celebrations afterwards, elbowed accidentally by a photographer in the melee. He said: 'It's two wins in a row, but they've not come easy by any means.'

Lando Norris savours ‘dream' British GP win but Piastri left hurt and confused

Lando Norris said his maiden victory at the British Grand Prix was everything he had dreamed of and a special moment to savour at his home race. However, his furious McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who finished second, was convinced he had been unfairly denied by a controversial stewards' decision. Norris, now in his sixth season in F1, took the victory after Piastri had been given a 10-second penalty while leading but the 25-year-old still produced an assured drive in treacherous wet conditions to become the 12th British driver to win their home race since it was first held in 1950. It is the one grand prix Norris wanted more than any other and he revelled in his success. 'This victory is everything I dreamed of,' he said. 'Being on top at your home race is very, very special.' He said that as he sealed the final laps he was enjoying taking in his accomplishment and, most important, ensuring he did not let it slip away from him. 'Looking up at the fans and seeing them on their feet, your mind just goes pretty blank,' he said. 'I was just trying to enjoy the moment. 'These are moments that none of you guys get to witness. This is only something that I and very few Brits have achieved. It is a selfish moment, in a way, but so special and incredible because it is such a rare thing to feel and witness. 'For me, it is my best win, maybe not the best way to win, but in terms of what it means to me, winning at home, it is very memorable. Apart from winning a championship, this is as good as it gets.' Norris grew up watching Lewis Hamilton win the British GP, with the seven-time champion holding a record nine victories here. With Hamilton finishing fourth for Ferrari it was an emotional moment for Norris to have achieved a feat to match those who had inspired him. 'Silverstone is where it all started for me, watching Lewis, Jenson [Button], Fernando [Alonso] and it was that wet race here in 2008 when I began watching Formula One,' he said. 'Lewis won and I got that picture of him going round and all the fans are standing up, creating an amazing atmosphere. I dreamed of that for many, many years and today I got to see that through my own eyes and live that moment.' Norris endured one minor hiccup after the race when a photographer fell off a fence in the pit lane on to the celebrating driver. He suffered a small cut to his face but shrugged it off amid the euphoria and has now closed to within eight points of Piastri in the championship battle. Piastri was penalised for braking erratically during a safety-car restart and thereby forcing Max Verstappen to take evasive action, but while he declined to speak critically of the stewards he was adamant he thought he had been wronged by the decision. 'I felt it was well within the rules, and I did it once already in that race. I don't really get it,' he said. 'I didn't do anything differently to my first restart. I didn't go slower. I don't think Max had to evade me. So I am a bit confused to say the least. I know I deserved a lot more than I did today and when you don't get the result you deserve, it hurts.' After serving his penalty, Piastri had asked the team if he might swap places with Norris, which they declined. The team principal, Andrea Stella, noted that he wants his drivers to voice their positions and was happy with Piastri doing so. 'Lando didn't do anything wrong so I don't think it would have been fair to swap, but I thought I should ask,' Piastri said. 'It doesn't change much for the championship. I felt I did a good job and I will use the frustration to make sure I win some more races.'
