Shoppers baffled after getting into 'debt' on Nectar cards

Daily Mirror22-07-2025
A shopper has been left confused after noticing their Nectar points balance appeared to be in the red, and it seems they're not the only one it has happened to
A Sainsbury's customer has expressed their confusion online after seemingly falling into 'debt' on their Nectar card. Taking to Reddit, the shopper shared a screenshot of their account, which displayed a negative balance of -115 points - a monetary value of -57p.

Nectar is loyalty-based card programme in which shoppers can accumulate points via a variety of participating retailers - most notably Sainsbury's, eBay, Argos and British Airways. These points can then be redeemed for discounts on future purchases or exchanged for rewards including savings on flights. However, according to one user, it appears things don't always go to plan.

"Gone overdrawn on my Nectar account," they penned in the CasualUK subreddit, prompting others to offer a variety of theories as to how the problem may have occurred. It seems they weren't the only one to fall foul of the problem, as a second Reddit user revealed their account is currently 464 points in the red.
"Happened to me," one person alleged of their own scenario. "Returned a TV (£1500) bought via eBay. Had already spent the points. Went badly into the Red when they took them back."
A third shopper claimed: "One time an error meant Sainsburys accidentally added 12k Nectar points to my account, they rectified it pretty quickly, HOWEVER, I had auto-convert to Avios enabled, so those 12,000 Nectar points were all turned into Avios immediately. So they took me 12,000 nectar points in debt."

Meanwhile a fourth Reddit user said: "This happened to me and it took me 6 months to get into the positive! It infuriated me, as surely it's the company's fault?!"
And a fifth hit out: "Someone spent all my Nectar points, in London, I don't live anywhere near London and haven't been for years.
"Complained to Nectar, they froze the account, but won't replace the points, because I can't remember the exact year and month I opened the account, all I know is I've had it for about 20 years!"

One explanation for the negative could be the result of suspected fraud or misconduct, according to Nectar's FAQ page. It states online:
"Redeemed points cannot be used again. If a transaction on which points are issued or redeemed is cancelled, reversed or not completed, we will reverse the associated points movement when instructed by the relevant Sponsor or Supplier. If insufficient points are available, or we suspect fraud or misconduct, Rewards may be refused or cancelled."
Earlier this month, meanwhile, Nectar announced a huge change that affects anyone who collects points with eBay.
As of September 1, you won't be able to collect or spend Nectar points directly on the eBay website. However, you will still be able to collect Nectar points on your eBay transactions when you shop through Nectar. To do this, you'll need to search for eBay on the Nectar app or website, then click on this to go through to the eBay website or app to make your purchase.
The good news is, you'll now collect two Nectar points for every £1 spent at eBay - up from the current rate of one Nectar point. Any vouchers that you have already created on eBay before August 31 will remain valid on eBay until their expiration date.

Sainsbury's makes major change to shopping as supermarket introduces Tesco Clubcard style savings

Sainsbury's has expanded its personalised discounts scheme for shoppers using its Nectar card. The supermarket chain rolled out its its 'Your Nectar Prices' programme to checkouts across Britain from 25 July. With Sainsbury's Your Nectar Prices scheme, Nectar app or Sainsbury's Nectar website shoppers can get up to 10 personalised discounts every week on items they purchase regularly or which are recommended to them. Now, they will be able to do so at the tills as well. However, the discounts must be 'unlocked' each week via the Sainsbury's website. To access the savings, shoppers must be digitally registered with Nectar. This can be done online or via the Nectar app. Once registered, loyalty members need to clock on the 'tap to unlock' Your Nectar Prices button in the Nectar app or website every week. If you do not do this, the Your Nectar Prices savings will not be applied when you shop. Shoppers accessing Your Nectar Prices via Sainsbury's need to have version 11.8 or later of the Nectar app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, Sainsbury's said. The offers available for Your Nectar Prices products are only valid for seven days, before the next selection of offers drops on a Friday. Sainsbury's claimed the Your Nectar Prices scheme could save customers more than £150 per year. The supermarket said it had generated over 17billion personalised discounts through the Your Nectar Prices scheme. It said the expansion to supermarket checkouts will allow more than 8.5million more shoppers to access Your Nectar Prices while they shop in stores. Sainsbury's shoppers can still benefit from Nectar Prices, which are discounted prices available to all Nectar customers on selected products when they shop. Shoppers can combine both schemes for maximum savings. For shoppers not wishing to register online or sign up to the app, Sainsbury's said: 'If you do not want to register digitally, you can still access great prices in a number of other ways when you shop at Sainsbury's, such as Nectar Prices and our Aldi Price Match campaign.' The move forms part of the supermarket's drive to ramp up personalised offers for shoppers. Mark Given, chief marketing, data and sustainability officer at Sainsbury's, said: 'Over the past few years, we've made significant strides with Nectar, with Nectar Prices being a big part of that success, bringing great value to millions of customers. 'But what really sets us apart is that we're leading the way by making loyalty personal. 'Shoppers want to feel recognised and rewarded and while Nectar Prices are for everyone, we know our customers love an offer that is made just for them. 'That's exactly what Your Nectar Prices delivers – it's about giving customers those extra savings on the products they love and buy most.' He added: 'Every week over a million customers are making the most of their personalised discounts and, by rolling this out to our checkouts, we're opening the door for millions more to grab fantastic offers on the items they already purchase and maybe even discover some new favourites.' Responses on X from shoppers have been mixed. One Sainsbury's shopper posting on X said: 'Your new Nectar prices email comes in early afternoon Friday, before which many hundreds of customers like us, have done their main shop. Please bring it forward at least 24 hours or are you doing it on purpose?!' Another shopper said on X: 'Changing Nectar Prices so you have to unlock them in the Nectar app each week is inconvenient for customers, shame you're moving to this.' First launched four years ago, Your Nectar Prices spans product categories including fresh food, household, health & beauty, baby and pet care. According to a survey from consumer group Which? last year, 74 per cent of shoppers have a Tesco Clubcard, while 50 per cent have a Nectar card. Having a Tesco Clubcard gives shoppers access to Clubcard Prices, which are available on selected products at Tesco. Only shoppers with a Tesco Clubcard have access to Clubcard Prices. Shoppers using the Tesco app can get personalised coupons to upload to their Tesco Clubcard to use online or to scan in-store. Supermarkets are vying to lure in more shoppers via loyalty schemes in a bid to boost their bottom lines. In November, following a probe, the Competition and Markets Authority said supermarket loyalty schemes do offer real savings. The CMA analysed approximately 50,000 grocery products on promotion and found that 92 per cent offered genuine savings against the usual price, despite the perception from 55 per cent of shoppers that 'usual' prices were raised to make loyalty deals more appealing. The watchdog's report found 'very little evidence' of supermarkets inflating their 'usual' prices to make loyalty promotions seem like a better deal.

"So that's what I did." The mum-of-three, from Hastings, quit her job as nurse, and now spends her time hustling from home. Not only was the busy mum able to pay for a fab holiday, she also used her side hustle income to pay for a garage conversion and is now working towards paying for a studio in the garden. She made a whopping £6300 in July, from 11 separate income streams, and has shared exactly where her cash has come from. Rover Amy made a humble £31.88 from pet sitting site Rover, which she received for having one pet stay over for the night. "You do need to look at licensing laws in your area", she advised anyone thinking of using the site to make cash. Top Cashback If you sign up to a cashback site, brands will pay the site when you shop with them, which will then get paid back to you as cashback. You can also make money from referrals, and Amy made £35 last month from one referral. Cashback Amy made £65.65 from another site called Cashback, which pays people for doing things like surveys, trials and games. I earn cash by selling 'actual rubbish' on eBay - I flogged a freebie I found on the floor by a bin for £10, it's crazy "You can make videos on TikTok and I think you get like £200 for that", she said. TikTok creator fund Last month, Amy made £97 from making videos on her TikTok channel. "It's my lowest ever month, but its still the best part of £100, so I am not sniffing at it", she said. eBay The busy mum made £211.59 from flogging bits and bobs on eBay in July. Do I need to pay tax on my side hustle income? MANY people feeling strapped for cash are boosting their bank balance with a side hustle. The good news is, there are plenty of simple ways to earn some additional income - but you need to know the rules. When you're employed the company you work for takes the tax from your earnings and pays HMRC so you don't have to. But anyone earning extra cash, for example from selling things online or dog walking, may have to do it themselves. Stephen Moor, head of employment at law firm Ashfords, said: "Caution should be taken if you're earning an additional income, as this is likely to be taxable. "The side hustle could be treated as taxable trading income, which can include providing services or selling products." You can make a gross income of up to £1,000 a year tax-free via the trading allowance, but over this and you'll usually need to pay tax. Stephen added: "You need to register for a self-assessment at HMRC to ensure you are paying the correct amount of tax. "The applicable tax bands and the amount of tax you need to pay will depend on your income." If you fail to file a tax return you could end up with a surprise bill from HMRC later on asking you to pay the tax you owe - plus extra fees on top. Etsy Amy has her own jewellery shop on Etsy, and made £241 from sales last month. Hosting international students The savvy saver and her family host international students and currently have two boys from Germany staying with them Monday to Friday. "We have had two sets of students this month, and it has brought us in £280", she said. Vinted Amy said that she hasn't used Vinted much lately, but was still able to cash in £285 from selling old clothes. Custard The final cashback site that Amy makes money from is called Custard, and also pays you for doing games and surveys. She revealed that you also get £5 everytime somebody you have referred to the site cashes out £10. The side hustling whizz was able to make a whopping £315 from Custard last month. Digital products Amy's second biggest earner is from selling digital products, which refers to anything that you can buy in digital form, such as an online course or guide. She makes money from selling a financial guide, and will soon be selling The Hustle Mumma Blueprint. "It's literally the blueprint to every side hustle that I do", she said. Digital products brought in £451.65 for Amy last month. Live selling By far Amy's biggest earner, live selling made her £4316. Tilt is a live auction selling app where customers bid on items in real-time, kind of like an in person auction. Amy sells clothes using the app, and also gets money from referrals. "Tilt has literally changed my life", she said.

Snap sinks as ad glitch, fierce competition stall growth

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Snap (SNAP.N), opens new tab shares plummeted nearly 17% in premarket trading on Wednesday as a weak quarter and mounting competition underscored the company's struggle to keep pace with AI-driven peers. Advertisers have been curtailing marketing budgets amid economic uncertainty and leaning toward bigger platforms like TikTok and Meta's (META.O), opens new tab Facebook and Instagram. That, and a glitch in Snap's ad-buying platform that resulted in ads being delivered at discounted rates contributed to quarterly revenue growth slowing down to 8.7% from a year ago. Although it aligned with estimates, it is a far cry from the brisk double-digit growth the Santa Monica, California-based company logged over the past five quarters. MoffettNathanson analysts said advertisers favor platforms that sit closer to users inclined to buy their product, offer strategies to different marketing tools, and can demonstrate clear return on ad spend. "Snap still lags on all three fronts," they said. "Until those factors change, we think the company remains stuck in monetization purgatory." The Snapchat-parent is now in a tough spot, especially as rivals Meta and Reddit reported strong second-quarter results last week. Snap is down around 12% this year, trailing rivals Meta that is up 30.3% and Reddit that is up 21.8%, as their AI-driven businesses are making big leaps. The company said a broader rollout of Sponsored Snaps — a new video ad format that appears in user inboxes — in June across the U.S. and several global regions, is driving increased user actions and deeper engagement with ad content. "For Snap to take advantage of its improvements in engagement it must better prove out the efficacy of its ads to advertisers and lower barriers to advertiser adoption of its products", Morgan Stanley analysts said.
