Matthijs de Ligt added to Netherlands squad for Nations League quarter-finals
Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has been added to the Netherlands squad for March's Nations League quarter-finals.
De Ligt was not initially selected when Ronald Koeman named his provisional squad on February 28, but he has since been recalled after defenders Nathan Ake and Stefan de Vrij withdrew due to injury. Ake is sidelined after undergoing foot surgery, while De Vrij sat out Inter's Champions League win over Feyenoord on Tuesday.

Last month's omission had been the first time the 25-year-old had not been picked in a squad, apart from when he has been injured, since making his international debut in 2017.
De Ligt has made 38 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United this season following his summer move from Bayern Munich. He experienced a difficult international call-up in September, where he was substituted at half-time during a 2-2 draw with Germany having made mistakes in the build-up to both opposition goals.
The Netherlands squad is otherwise unchanged from the one Koeman named in February, with De Ligt's United team-mate Joshua Zirkzee continuing to miss out, and Memphis Depay returning for the first time since the 2024 European Championship.

Memphis, 31, joined Corinthians on a free transfer in September following the conclusion of his Atletico Madrid contract. He scored seven goals in 11 league appearances for the Brazilian side during the 2024 season.
Speaking in September, Koeman said the forward still had an international future, performance-dependent, after criticising Steven Bergwijn's move to Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad.
'I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn's move to Saudi but with Memphis, it can be different,' Koeman said. 'The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his fitness and if he reaches his level.'
The Netherlands play Spain in a two-legged Nations League quarter-final tie on March 20 and 23.

Real Madrid star sends clear message amid ongoing exit chatter
Real Madrid's new era under Xabi Alonso has officially begun, and one of the first players to report for training was Brazilian winger Rodrygo Goes. Despite widespread speculation about a possible departure this summer, the 24-year-old has made his intentions crystal clear that he wants to stay at the club. Advertisement Rodrygo has been the subject of transfer rumours since the end of last season, with some reports suggesting he could be moved on to make space in a star-studded attack. But according to the latest updates, the winger has already communicated his desire to remain at Real Madrid. The arrival of Alonso as head coach appears to have been a turning point, as Rodrygo is reportedly pleased with the new manager's methods and atmosphere in training. 'Happy' Rodrygo wants to reinvent himself The Brazilian recently posted a set of images from training on his official X account, accompanied by a single-word caption: 'Happy.' While short, the message spoke volumes. Rodrygo is clearly content at the club and hopeful that the new project led by Alonso will give him a more prominent role in the team. Advertisement Although the transfer window will be active for a long time and anything can happen, the club and the player are now seemingly aligned. Rodrygo has a long-term contract until 2028, with a staggering €1 billion release clause, which is a strong indicator that Real Madrid still value him highly. At 24, he is entering a key phase in his career. With Alonso looking to reshape the squad with fresh ideas and tactical flexibility, Rodrygo might get a chance to flourish in a more defined role. For now, his message is loud and clear that he is staying at Real Madrid, and he is excited about what's ahead. However, one cannot predict what might happen.

(Alfredo Falcone/LaPresse via AP) Manchester City concluded a $150 million spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup by announcing the signing of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders moved for an initial fee of 55 million euros ($63 million) and is the second midfielder — after France playmaker Rayan Cherki — to join City in the special June 1-10 transfer window created to allow sides in the 32-team Club World Cup to reshape their squads. Advertisement City paid Lyon $41 million for Cherki and also signed Algeria left back Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton for $42 million. After deciding not to push to sign Florian Wirtz — the Germany playmaker is close to joining Liverpool, according to reports in the British media — City has spent around the same amount on three players. Add this latest splurge to an outlay of more than $200 million in the winter transfer window and City has already spent at least $350 million on players in 2025 to provide manager Pep Guardiola with a squad capable of reclaiming the Premier League title from Liverpool. Breakthrough season Advertisement Reijnders has just been named as the best midfielder in Serie A after a breakthrough campaign in which he scored 15 goals and added five assists across all competitions for Milan, which endured a dismal season and failed to qualify for Europe. He joined Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 for a fee of around 20 million euros (then $22.4 million) and recently signed a contract extension through to June 2030. That's the length of his contract at City, too. City is releasing De Bruyne to end his 10-year stint at the club and now has Reijnders and Cherki to link up with Rodri in an enticing midfield set-up. Reijnders said he was 'ecstatic' to be joining City. Advertisement 'It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League," he said. 'This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.' City director of football Hugo Viana said Reijnders — who specializes in being a ball-carrying midfielder — will add 'extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield.' City announced the transfer of Reijnders a day after the special transfer window closed but appears to have signed him in time for him to play in the new-look, 32-team Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City is in the same group as Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca and its first match is on June 18. ___ AP soccer:

Former Man United defender Jonny Evans unsure of next career move
Former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has claimed he is in no rush to decide what his future holds after hanging up his boots. The United academy product played his last match for United in a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford last month. Advertisement It was thought that he may continue his playing career and was linked to Wrexham AFC but he decided to retire at his boyhood club. It has also been reported that Evans may have a future role in coaching and his attitude to young players has been praised by both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. The former United defender was honoured in his home city of Belfast yesterday evening for his services to Northern Irish football. He was given a huge portrait of himself in the green and white of his nation's colours. Speaking to BBC Sport NI before Northern Ireland's 1-0 victory over Iceland, he claimed that he was going to take time before making his next step. Advertisement When asked about his future he stated, 'I'm not sure yet'. He added, 'I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything.' The former United defender sang the praises of his former international manager Michael O'Neill and claimed, 'when you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope.' He also added that the coach has the experience of guiding a team to a major tournament owing to the job he did in Euro 2016 and could well do the same with his current side. Evans also spoke on the potential of his former international team and claimed, 'I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together.'
