Mexico cruise tax compromise is good news for cruisers, port towns

Yahoo17-05-2025
The cruise industry's efforts to stop a $42 per-passenger cruise tax proposed by the Mexican government seems to have been successful.
Cruise industry leaders were blindsided by the plan last fall and have since been meeting with Mexican government officials to find a balanced solution that supports Mexico's tourism industry and keeps Mexico cruises affordable for travelers.Although they were focused on collaboration with Mexico, cruise industry leaders warned that it wouldn't be difficult for cruise lines to adjust itineraries to swap Mexican ports of call with other destinations if the $42 tax was implemented as planned on July 1.
Even a small drop in cruise ship traffic could mean millions of dollars in lost revenue for local businesses in communities that depend on tourism, cancelling out the tax's intended economic benefits.
It appears that the Mexican government listened to both cruise industry leaders and concerned port town residents, and came up with a better solution. The Mexican government has not completely dropped the planned cruise tax, but has significantly decreased it.
Instead of charging $42 for each passenger beginning July 1, Mexico will introduce the cruise tax at a rate of $5 per passenger to start, according to Riviera Maya News.
The cruise tax is expected to double in 2026 and increase again in 2027 and 2028, however. It will increase to $10 for 2026 and rise gradually, eventually reaching $21.These new tax amounts, which are intended to increase cruise tourism's contribution to Mexico's economic development, have been agreed upon by the Federation of Cruise Services and Related Activities (FSCA) and the Mexican government, according to Mexican Senator Eugenio Segura Vázquez.
Riviera Maya News reports that the agreement includes 'commitments from the cruise ship companies to increase the number of cruise passengers to Mexican ports, promote infrastructure projects such as the fourth pier in Cozumel and the acquisition of domestic supplies, especially artisanal products, for sale on cruise ships.'Although the cruise industry has yet to comment on the Mexico cruise tax compromise, Carnival Corp. CEO Josh Weinstein previously expressed an optimistic outlook about the ongoing tax talks during a state of the industry panel at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference on April 8.
'We had an amazing meeting with the governor of Quintana Roo and others, and everything is moving in the right direction for hopefully something that's incredibly collaborative in its approach,' Weinstein said, as reported by Cruise Industry News.Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and other cruise lines have recently been focused on expanding cruise options visiting Mexican ports.
Reaching a compromise with Mexico is especially good news for Royal Caribbean, since the cruise line is currently making major investments, developing new cruise destination experiences in Mexico to better serve passengers who want to explore the western Caribbean.
Royal Beach Club Cozumel is set to debut in 2026, and Perfect Day Mexico is expected to open in Costa Maya in 2027. Like its popular private island in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Perfect Day Mexico will feature a waterpark, pools, beaches, restaurants, bars, and other experiences, all developed with locally inspired designs and flavors.

Officials issue warning as insect with fatal sting invades tourist hotspot: 'It's most likely that ... it arrived via maritime cargo transport'

Officials issue warning as insect with fatal sting invades tourist hotspot: 'It's most likely that ... it arrived via maritime cargo transport' Local authorities and beekeepers in Spain are on high alert after discovering the first case of the Oriental hornet on the Balearic Islands, the Majorca Daily Bulletin reported. What's happening? A series of traps set up to lure and reduce the population numbers of Asian hornets in the Binibona village of Mallorca, Spain, managed to trap an Oriental hornet. Although Oriental hornets were discovered in Valencia, Spain, more than a decade ago in 2012, this is the first recorded case of an Oriental hornet on the Balearic Islands. This discovery indicates a rapid expansion of the invasive species eastward in the country, which is troubling news for local honey bee colonies. Beekeepers and conservationists are especially concerned about the detection of the Oriental hornet in this region, as it signals the successful expansion of this invasive species into new territory. "It's most likely that, like most invasive insects, it arrived via maritime cargo transport," the Government's Species Protection Service explained, per the Majorca Daily Bulletin. Compared to Asian hornets, which are also an invasive species, Oriental hornets are larger wasps that target honey bees but will, in some cases, harm humans. Due to their larger size and subsequent increased venom dose, Oriental hornets can inflict greater damage on their prey, depositing enough venom to increase the risk of anaphylactic shock. Why is the spread of invasive species important? Invasive species like the Oriental hornet have detrimental effects on local ecosystems. Due to a lack of natural predators in their new environment, invasive species tend to multiply at an aggressive rate, outcompeting native species for vital resources, including food, light, and water. This rapid growth can push out native species and lead to biodiversity loss, which throws entire ecosystems out of balance. Since Oriental hornets target honey bee colonies due to their rich source of food, it can lead to a decline in population of these important pollinators, which are crucial to maintaining ecosystem balance and help secure the human food supply, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. What can I do to help? One way to limit and prevent the spread of invasive species is to prioritize and support the growth and well-being of native plants, animals, and habitats. By strengthening an ecosystem's natural components, it can more effectively fight off attempts by invasive species to enter new territories, as well as prevent the spread of harmful diseases. You can help stop the spread of invasive species like the Oriental hornet by learning about these animals and how to identify them in the wild. Conservation organizations and local authorities depend on the aid of an engaged community to identify emerging cases and better target conservation efforts. UK's Reeves Looks at Family Home Tax to Fill Looming Budget Hole

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is considering taxing high-value family homes as she looks for ways to plug a multibillion-pound hole in the upcoming budget. The move would make expensive primary properties subject to capital gains tax, ending a long-standing exemption, according to a government official who asked not to be named given the sensitive nature of discussions. The Times was first to reported the proposal, dubbing it a 'mansion tax.'
