Yankees predicted to land Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suárez in monster 8-player swap

Yahoo19-07-2025
The New York Yankees would love to have Eugenio Suárez.
Third base is New York's biggest lineup hole at the moment, and the Arizona Diamondbacks' star has been the best offensive third baseman in baseball this season. With the trade deadline looming, Suárez is one of the biggest dominoes to fall--whether he gets traded ahead of free agency or not.
The Yankees could also really use Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly, another impending free agent with a recent playoff pedigree. Would they stand a chance at landing both in one fell swoop?
Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com believes it's possible, predicting earlier this week that New York would acquire both D-backs stars in an eight-player blockbuster.
"Suarez's comments to reporters about the Yanks during All-Star week - 'If I go over there, I'll try my best to help them win a World Series' - are put to the test," Caldera wrote. "One day before MLB's July 31 trade deadline, the Yankees land Suarez, starter Merrill Kelly and lefty reliever Jalen Beeks from the Diamondbacks."
"In exchange, the Yankees send right-hander Clayton Beeter, top minor league pitching prospects Ben Hess and Bryce Cunningham, outfielder Everson Pereira and infielder Roc Riggio to Arizona."

Yes, Suárez and Kelly are both rentals. And this is just one writer's opinion, but that return package, especially for a combination of the two, feels a little light.
The prospects teams want most from the Yankees right now, assuming shortstop George Lombard Jr. is off the table, are likely outfielder Spencer Jones, recently-debuted pitcher Cam Schlittler, and Double-A fireballer Carlos Lagrange. This package has none of them.
Hess and Cunningham are both having good seasons too, so maybe there's an outside shot the Yankees can avoid giving those others away. But the Diamondbacks are within their rights to demand the world, because a ton of teams would love to have Suárez, Kelly, or both.

Rangers add veteran right-hander Merrill Kelly in a trade with the Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (AP) — The Texas Rangers acquired right-hander Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, adding a veteran starter with postseason experience to fortify their rotation at the trade deadline. The D-backs received three minor league pitchers: left-handers Kohl Drake and Mitch Bratt and right-hander David Hagaman. The 36-year-old Kelly has spent all of his seven major league seasons leagues with the Diamondbacks. He was the only Arizona pitcher to beat the Rangers in the 2023 World Series, throwing seven dominant innings in Game 2. 'We know when he takes the ball, we've seen it firsthand playing against him, and we have heard from so many people what an ultra competitor he is,' Rangers general manager Chris Young said. "So happy he's a Ranger.' Kelly is 9-6 with a 3.22 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 128 2/3 innings this season. The Rangers also beefed up their bullpen, adding right-hander Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers — right-hander Skylar Hales and lefty Mason Molina — and international bonus pool money. The 32-year-old Maton has a 2.35 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 38 1/3 innings. Finally, Texas added left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league left-hander Garrett Horn. The D-backs were sellers at the deadline, sending first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners in separate deals. Outfielder Randal Grichuk was shipped to the Royals. Arizona also sent pitchers Shelby Miller and Jordan Montgomery to the Brewers for cash. Arizona is 51-58 after entering the season with playoff expectations. General manager Mike Hazen said it was particularly tough to lose Kelly, given his history with the organization. 'There's the collective disappointment in how we've played,' Hazen said. 'We all feel it. The players feel it, I've certainly taken responsibility, shared that with them, how I didn't do a good enough job to keep this team in position to keep going.'

Stanton and Rice hit early homers as Yankees beat Rays 7-4 on busy trade-deadline day

NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice homered in the first two innings and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 in a game interrupted by rain for nearly three hours Thursday. On a busy trade-deadline day, the Yankees made a flurry of moves highlighted by the acquisition of two-time All-Star reliever David Bednar from Pittsburgh for three minor leaguers. Tampa Bay, also active at the deadline, lost three starters to injury during the game. Stanton hit his eighth homer since returning from tendinitis in both elbows last month for a 3-0 lead against starter Ryan Pepiot (6-9) four batters into the game. Rice launched a three-run shot into the Yankees' bullpen in right-center to make it 6-0. New York starter Marcus Stroman (3-3) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. Yerry de los Santos struck out five in three perfect innings and Jonathan Loáisiga got three outs for his first save since 2022. Cody Bellinger hit an RBI single ahead of Stanton's homer. Yankees newcomer Austin Slater had an RBI groundout in the third for New York, which won for the fourth time in five games since putting Aaron Judge on the injured list. Stroman did not allow a hit until the fourth, when the Rays scored four times. Jonathan Aranda and Jonny DeLuca hit RBI singles, Taylor Walls had an RBI double and Junior Caminero lifted a sacrifice fly. Aranda became the third Tampa Bay starter to leave the game with an injury after he was holding his left wrist following a collision with Stanton at first base. Yandy Díaz exited with a bruised right forearm after getting hit by a pitch in the first inning and rookie Chandler Simpson came out with a sprained left index finger in the third. Pepiot was tagged for seven runs and six hits in four innings. Stanton homered after Walls lost a popup by Paul Goldschmidt in the wind and the ball dropped behind in shallow left field for a double. Key stats Rice has seven homers in 21 starts as a leadoff hitter. Up next ___

Raiders defensive line looks to prove itself after release of Christian Wilkins

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Christian Wilkins' expected impact on the Raiders' defensive line was in question long before he was shockingly released last week, which if nothing else provided clarity on what kind of front Las Vegas can take into the season. Jonah Laulu has showed some promise he could take over Wilkins' spot at tackle next to Adam Butler, who comes off a career season. Maxx Crosby is an elite edge rusher, and Malcolm Koonce on the other side has shown the ability to disrupt opposing passing games. Not that replacing one of the game's top interior linemen will be simple, but the Raiders might be able to absorb such a change reasonably well. 'We're not necessarily the biggest group, but across the board everybody moves really well,' coach Pete Carroll said. 'So we're going to play to that. ... That's a real competitive group, and that's going to take us all camp. It's going to take us through the games and all of that to figure that out. There's no rush. 'But it's a good spot because there's enough guys that have something to show you, so we just got to give them the right opportunities and see if we can draw out the best in them.' Crosby is the group's star, and in practice he has resembled the player who in 2022 and 2023 had 27 sacks and 45 tackles for loss. He played through injury last season in totaling 7 1/2 sacks and 17 tackles for loss over 12 games before finally being shut down to undergo ankle surgery. At the other end, Koonce missed the entire season because of a torn ACL. It was a major setback to a player trying to build on a 2023 season in which had six sacks over the final four games. The Raiders signed him to a one-year, $12 million prove-it contract this season. 'We're counting on Malcolm to be a big factor,' Carroll said. 'He's really athletic and he's really natural player, and he's got good instincts.' Butler and Laulu occupy the two inside spots. The Raiders have a known quantity in Butler, an eight-year veteran coming off back-to-back seasons in which he had five sacks each season. He was especially effective last season, starting a career-high 16 games. Butler didn't start any games in 2023, though he played in all 17. 'You only got one chance to do this,' Butler said. 'I don't get to do my career over again. I changed my attitude, changed my approach to the game, and I just decided that I wasn't going to be just a third down player anymore. I decided that I am a starter. I'm going to prove myself in this league, and anybody that says I'm not, I'm going to do everything in my power to shut them up.' Laulu takes on the burden of being the player expected to step in for Wilkins. The second-year pro played in all 17 games last season, starting seven after Wilkins broke his foot in Week 5. Though Laulu had just three tackles for loss and one sack, he has used the extra snaps in practice this year to make a case for a bigger role, something Carroll said hasn't gone unnoticed. 'Coming in late to training camp, I came here the week before we played Week 1 and was just trying to learn the plays,' Laulu said. 'I was trying to learn our philosophy on the defense, how we operate, and how do we attack offenses. 'Being able to now transition to this year where I'm still under the same coaches on defense and being able to stack on top of last year, I'm very comfortable in the defense, even though we changed some things.' Notes By not holding out, left tackle Kolton Miller doesn't have any catching up to do in training camp after signing a three-year, $66 million extension Wednesday, including $42.5 million guaranteed. 'Each day is an opportunity, and I feel like if you're not in it, you're taking a step back and it's really not helping you,' Miller said. 'So I'm glad this all worked out, and I wouldn't want to do it any other way.' 2024 second-round draft pick Jackson Powers-Johnson came out of minicamp as the expected starting center, but shared the position with third-year pro Jordan Meredith in camp. That is until Thursday when Meredith lined up at center and Powers-Johnson at right guard. ... Jakorian Bennett started seven games at cornerback last season before going out with a shoulder injury, but has mostly been running with the second and third teams. Bennett pointed to not starting in high school until his senior season, going to a junior college and then to Maryland. 'I always feel like the underdog,' Bennett said. 'Not saying I'm an underdog right now, but I always had to get out the mud, and that's nothing I shy away from.' ___ AP NFL:
