Ex Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden breaks his silence on soap's infamous race row which saw him 'wrongly' accused by co-star and left suffering a nervous breakdown
At the time the pair were said to have 'mimicked the accent of a mixed-raced actress' on set, resulting in a vigorous enquiry, with their characters' absences explained by the pair taking an extended Portuguese holiday.
Speaking on The Lewis Nicholls Show Matthew, 45, said he and Isabel had been 'falsely' accused and said the pair were in fact impersonating a white British character from BBC sketch show League Of Gentleman.
The actor, who quit the role of David Metcalfe in 2023, claimed ITV bosses stopped him from defending himself publicly, resulting in his mental health 'spiralling' before checking into the Priory Clinic.
He said: 'So a young cast member mistakenly thought he heard us doing a Chinese accent, so he went up to see the producer and said, 'I'm not very happy about this, I think I've just heard them mimicking a Chinese accent','

'So because of this we did have to get suspended because as soon as that's an issue they have to go down the correct routes while they investigate what happens'.
Matthew explained that he and former co-star Isabel, 31, who plays Victoria Sugden, were in an onscreen romance and as a result of spending so much time together bonded over TV comedy and would often act out their favourite scenes.
'I said to her, "Have you ever seen the League of Gentlemen?" And there's a scene in the League of Gentlemen where Reece Shearsmith dresses up as a lady called Pam Doove and it's called the Orange Juice Scene'.
'He's playing an actress who comes into an audition room and is very eloquent - it's an old acting joke - and then the director says, "Go out of the room and come back in" and say "Has anyone got a bottle of orange juice?" for an audition. and she returns and does it in a different accent'.
Matthew claimed the Emmerdale press team told him to 'stay quiet' when 'all he wanted to do' was tell the truth about what really happened.
'It was hard and I got very very poorly and had a nervous breakdown. I ended up having a nervous breakdown and I ended up in the priory for a month. I thought I was going to lose my job over this over something I haven't done.
He continued: 'I've always struggled with my mental health so just ended up with this big spiral down and ended up having a nervous breakdown. I had to be taken into the Priory for a month to get better.'
While not naming the person who made accusation against him, Matthew said they'd left the show before he returned from suspension.
'It would've been difficult to go back and be face to face with the person who accused you absolutely wrongly'.
An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Whilst we would never comment on specific cases, ITV takes all allegations of racism and bullying extremely seriously and investigates all incidents thoroughly and takes appropriate action'.
At the time fellow Emmerdale star Aaron Anthony was said to have dramatically quit because he was 'bitterly angry' with two of his co-stars amid the race probe.
Aaron, who played Ellis Chapman, told producers he would not be returning after his contract ends because he is furious with his colleagues' alleged behaviour, claims The Sun.
Aaron was reportedly so 'furious' about the row and how the subsequent investigation 'has been handled', he has decided to leave the show after two years.
A source told the publication: 'Aaron is bitterly angry about this situation and he has had to be persuaded to come back to Leeds film his scenes in recent months.
'He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last.
'He has been very vocal in his opinions about the allegations and about the way in which the enquiries have been handled by the bosses. He now feels his position on the show is untenable.'
MailOnline has contacted Aaron's representatives and Emmerdale for comment at the time.
Aaron took over the role from disgraced actor Asan N'Jie, who was sacked for threatening to 'kill' fellow soap star Jamie Lomas, 44, at the TV Choice Awards in 2019.

Rylan Clark sheds light on 'intense' journey as he declares 'love' for ITV co-star
Rylan Clark has gushed over his 'love' for his former ITV co-star, as the pair opened up to one another on the presenter's BBC Radio 2 show Radio host Rylan Clark has openly expressed his love and admiration for his co-star, who he first met while finding fame on an ITV show. The 36-year-old ex-contestant was chatting to the singer-songwriter on his Radio 2 programme about her latest book when he burst into glowing praise. Rylan was speaking with former X Factor judge Tulisa, 37, following the launch of her new memoir 'Judgement: Love, Trials, and Tribulations', chronicling her life and career journey. Tulisa rose to stardom as the lead singer of N-Dubz, before penning several books and featuring on various TV shows including I'm A Me Out of Here!. Chatting to his friend on his BBC Radio 2 programme, fellow writer Rylan showered Tulisa with compliments over her book's brilliant reception. He said: "I've got to say I'm also an author, Tulisa. I'm also an author. So far, it's doing incredible, it's, like, on the Amazon best sellers list already. It's all kicking off. For anyone out there, we had this chat last night, you know I'm a Tulisa fan, I love you to bits. "But for anyone, you don't even need to know who you are to read this story, because it is so intense. It is literally, I can already see the film, clearly, it's going to be Jennifer Lawrence playing you." This marks another occasion the pair have supported one another in the chaotic realm of entertainment. In an Instagram post shared months ago, Rylan declared: "Never been prouder @tulisacontostavlos. From 2012 to now we've been through a lot and I'm so proud we stayed by each others side. Now it's time for everyone to know your truth. "We've never publicised it, we've just been there for eachother. I'm so happy your words will now be heard by everyone. Tulisa's book Judgement is out now x #Day1 x." In response, Tulisa replied: "Love you will all my heart you beautiful earth angel." (sic) In recent years Tulisa has spoken about the difficult period she endured in the public eye, saying that she had tried to end her own life following being deceived in a sting operation by 'Fake Sheikh' Mazher Mahmood. Although she faced charges for supplying class A drugs, her case was thrown out when it came to light that Mahmood had lied in court. She revealed that her "year from hell" had driven her to attempt suicide on two occasions. Discussing the ordeal on This Morning, Tulisa said: "The first attempt was quite light in a sense...I was very drunk and I wasn't sure, just go for it, I've had enough. "It was the second time that after the trial had finished then I had time to really process everything that happened was the real kicker. Surviving that was a miracle." When asked about her feelings in 2025, she said that there were long-term effects on how she interacted with people. Tulisa admitted: "I don't think I'll ever trust in the same way again but I am someone who has a logical head on their shoulders. I hope for the best in people I'm not a negative person, I'm not looking for negative things in someone."

Drag Race stars fight back tears as they pay tribute to late The Vivienne in trailer for new documentary
DRAG Race stars are seen fighting back tears as they pay tribute to The Vivienne in the trailer for a new documentary about the late star. James Lee Williams, 32, died from a cardiac arrest caused by the effects of taking the drug, it was revealed earlier this year. 10 10 10 10 The TV star, who won the first series of RuPaul 's Drag Race UK, was was found dead in the bath at home near Chester on January 5. James, who went by the pronouns they/them, was discovered by a neighbour after worried friends were unable to get hold of them. Now the first trailer for The Vivienne 's new documentary, which pays tribute to the much-loved star, has been released. Called Dear Viv, the BBC film celebrates the life of James and also hears from people who knew and loved them. The touching doc features interviews with their Drag Race friends, including Raja, Danny Beard, Michael Marouli, Cheryl Hole, Tia Kofi, and Baga Chipz. In one particular heartbreaking moment, Raja is seen attempting to hold back tears while preparing to speak to the cameras. Celebrity Big Brother star Danny Beard is also shown breaking down when asked to speak about James. The tear-jerking trailer comes to an end with a message from Viv, who is heard saying: "It's really nice to show people that you are a real person under all that glamour." FAMILY'S GRIEF In April, James' sister Chanel Williams opened about how their family "continue to be completely devastated". In a BBC Newsnight special, she candidly shared that the drag queen legend had hidden their substance struggles for years. Heartbreaking new details of The Vivienne's ketamine struggle revealed by family Chanel told how they only discovered James' addiction after they opened up about it on RuPaul's Drag Race in 2019. At the time, the drag star said: "I couldn't leave the drugs at the party, it was constant." They bravely revealed how Ketamine use saw them hospitalised three times in the space of a month. The Vivienne was commended at the time for raising awareness of substance abuse while appearing on the show. 10 10 Despite staying sober for period of time, James' family were unaware they had relapsed shortly before his death. Chanel told the BBC: "Had I asked the questions or just looked for the signs, would the outcome be different?' "He was at the height of everything he was doing and I think because he'd said it in such an open platform, it's really difficult to come back and say you're struggling again." The grieving sibling also questioned whether James' fame made them feel they had to hide away amid their relapse. Chanel continued: "To think that if we'd known, or if he'd have felt able to talk and really reach out for the help that was needed, the outcome could've been different." The family are now workin to raise awareness around the dangers of Ketamine - and see it changed to a Class A drug. Ketamine is used by vets as a horse anaesthetic but is misused as a party drug. STAR CAREER James shot to fame six years ago, when they won the first season of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. The drag star went on to compete in an all-winners season of the franchise in the US in 2022 - the only Brit to do so. James also starred on BBC Three show The Vivienne Takes On Hollywood in 2020 and appeared on Channel 4 's Celebrity Hunted For Stand Up To Cancer two years then came third place on Dancing on Ice in 2023. 10 10
