Ex Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden breaks his silence on soap's infamous race row which saw him 'wrongly' accused by co-star and left suffering a nervous breakdown
Former Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden has broken his silence on the soap's infamous 2021 race row which resulted in him and co-star Isabel Hodgins being suspended for three months and him suffering a nervous breakdown. At the time the pair were said to have 'mimicked the accent of a mixed-raced actress' on set, resulting in a vigorous enquiry, with their characters' absences explained by the pair taking an extended Portuguese holiday. Speaking on The Lewis Nicholls Show Matthew, 45, said he and Isabel had been 'falsely' accused and said the pair were in fact impersonating a white British character from BBC sketch show League Of Gentleman. The actor, who quit the role of David Metcalfe in 2023, claimed ITV bosses stopped him from defending himself publicly, resulting in his mental health 'spiralling' before checking into the Priory Clinic. He said: 'So a young cast member mistakenly thought he heard us doing a Chinese accent, so he went up to see the producer and said, 'I'm not very happy about this, I think I've just heard them mimicking a Chinese accent',' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'So because of this we did have to get suspended because as soon as that's an issue they have to go down the correct routes while they investigate what happens'. Matthew explained that he and former co-star Isabel, 31, who plays Victoria Sugden, were in an onscreen romance and as a result of spending so much time together bonded over TV comedy and would often act out their favourite scenes. 'I said to her, "Have you ever seen the League of Gentlemen?" And there's a scene in the League of Gentlemen where Reece Shearsmith dresses up as a lady called Pam Doove and it's called the Orange Juice Scene'. 'He's playing an actress who comes into an audition room and is very eloquent - it's an old acting joke - and then the director says, "Go out of the room and come back in" and say "Has anyone got a bottle of orange juice?" for an audition. and she returns and does it in a different accent'. Matthew claimed the Emmerdale press team told him to 'stay quiet' when 'all he wanted to do' was tell the truth about what really happened. 'It was hard and I got very very poorly and had a nervous breakdown. I ended up having a nervous breakdown and I ended up in the priory for a month. I thought I was going to lose my job over this over something I haven't done. He continued: 'I've always struggled with my mental health so just ended up with this big spiral down and ended up having a nervous breakdown. I had to be taken into the Priory for a month to get better.' While not naming the person who made accusation against him, Matthew said they'd left the show before he returned from suspension. 'It would've been difficult to go back and be face to face with the person who accused you absolutely wrongly'. An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Whilst we would never comment on specific cases, ITV takes all allegations of racism and bullying extremely seriously and investigates all incidents thoroughly and takes appropriate action'. At the time fellow Emmerdale star Aaron Anthony was said to have dramatically quit because he was 'bitterly angry' with two of his co-stars amid the race probe. Aaron, who played Ellis Chapman, told producers he would not be returning after his contract ends because he is furious with his colleagues' alleged behaviour, claims The Sun. Aaron was reportedly so 'furious' about the row and how the subsequent investigation 'has been handled', he has decided to leave the show after two years. A source told the publication: 'Aaron is bitterly angry about this situation and he has had to be persuaded to come back to Leeds film his scenes in recent months. 'He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last. 'He has been very vocal in his opinions about the allegations and about the way in which the enquiries have been handled by the bosses. He now feels his position on the show is untenable.' MailOnline has contacted Aaron's representatives and Emmerdale for comment at the time. Aaron took over the role from disgraced actor Asan N'Jie, who was sacked for threatening to 'kill' fellow soap star Jamie Lomas, 44, at the TV Choice Awards in 2019.

Jonathan Ross' famous family - rarely-seen son, model daughter and split from wife
Jonathan Ross isn't the only famous face in the clan and has suffered a great deal over the years, facing a split from wife Jane and his daughters tragic health diagnosis Jonathan Ross has been a familiar face in our living rooms since the 80s but he isn't the lone star of his household. First captivating audiences in The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross on Channel 4 back in 1987, he's since fronted an array of programmes, including his eponymous talk show and now sparkles ahead of his anticipated appearance in the first-ever celebrity edition of The Traitors. With a storied career spanning television, radio presenting, and advertising, Ross has accrued an impressive net worth estimated at £30 million. Away from the spotlight, Jonathan is happily married to screenwriter Jane Goldman. After tying the knot in 1988 when Jane was just 18, they've enjoyed nearly three decades of marriage. Together, they parent three children: Betty Kitten, 33, Harvey Kirby, 31, and Honey Kinney, 28. They met when Jonathan was 26 and Jane only 16, during her days as a showbiz journalist, reports the Mirror. Like any couple in the limelight, they've had their share of ups and downs, including a publicised rift in their relationship. Heartbreaking split In 1999, marital harmony took a downturn as Goldman struggled with depression, leading to a breakdown and a stay at the Priory Clinic that called for a brief separation. Their joint statement at the time disclosed: "Jane, who suffers from depression, recently had a breakdown for which she checked into the Priory Clinic for treatment. "As a result of this very stressful period a great deal of strain has been put on the marriage. Jane and Jonathan's main concern at the moment is the happiness and security of their children." Rarely-seen son Middle child Harvey, who generally shuns the limelight, was recently seen soaking up some fame alongside his father and sister Honey during an appearance on Celebrity Gogglebox. Albeit typically discreet about his life, Harvey found himself the topic of unintended scrutiny when his dad and sister let slip about his upcoming wedding. On an instalment of the Table Manners podcast featuring Jessie and Lennie Ware, with Honey also joining her renowned father, the conversation veered towards family affairs, ultimately spotlighting Harvey. Renowned for poking fun, Jonathan remarked: "Harvey has got the longest hair in the family, and largely unwashed. He doesn't wash it often because he's part of that gang who think you shouldn't use soaps." In the midst of chatter, Honey unexpectedly disclosed: "He did just get engaged!" while Jonathan dropped hints about potential expansion to the family by mentioning: "They're thinking of starting a family next year." Devastating diagnosis The family's eldest, Betty, has faced formidable health challenges, courageously discussing her journey post-fibromyalgia diagnosis made in 2021. Jane and Jonathan's eldest child, Betty, has faced significant health challenges, including chronic fatigue syndrome and postural tachycardia syndrome, which affects her heart rate and mobility, requiring her to use an electric wheelchair. Jonathan has been open about his admiration for her strength, telling the Express: "It's been a tough couple of years for her [Betty] in particular, but she is getting slowly better." TV and podcast star In contrast, their youngest daughter, Honey, has followed in her father's footsteps in the entertainment industry, working as a model and advocating for body positivity. She co-hosts the podcast Reel Talk with Jonathan, discussing their favourite TV shows and films. However, she has also spoken out about the pressures of growing up in the public eye, recently expressing her distress over her family's "overexposure" on the show. Honey has been candid about her own struggles with self-esteem, using her platform to raise awareness about the importance of promoting positive body image. During an appearance on Loose Women, she urged parents not to put their children on diets, sharing her own experiences of being presented with weight loss solutions as a teenager. She advised parents to avoid shaming their children about their bodies, saying: "They presented me with diets and diets, as we know, don't work and are absolutely toxic. My advice to parents is keep that as far away from your children as possible, if you want them to have a good relationship with food and their bodies growing up do not shame them." Other famous faces in the family In addition to his many pets and children, Jonathan's brother Paul also made a name for himself as a TV presenter on Channel 4's popular breakfast show The Big Breakfast, among other television appearances. Another prominent member of the family includes his late mother Martha, who became a familiar face on EastEnders.

Due to all of her individual conditions, Betty now needs to reply on an electric wheelchair for mobility. Jonathan has never shied away from sharing his support and admiration, commenting to the Express: "It's been a tough couple of years for her [Betty] in particular, but she is getting slowly better." "They presented me with diets and diets, as we know, don't work and are absolutely toxic. My advice to parents is keep that as far away from your children as possible, if you want them to have a good relationship with food and their bodies growing up do not shame them."
