Blue Ghost lander captures first Moon photos after stunning 'Blue Marble' Earth image

America's next Moon lander, Blue Ghost, is traveling through space after launching from Florida earlier this month and capturing breathtaking views.
Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 15, carrying 10 Nasa payloads to the Moon.
About a week after launch, the spacecraft looked back on Earth during its second Earth-orbit burn, capturing the "Blue Marble" from where it came from.
In the next few years, NASA astronauts will have a similar view of Earth in the rearview mirror as they head toward the Moon on the space agency's Orion spacecraft.
According to Firefly Aerospace, the image was taken about 4,163 miles above Earth.
"Firefly captured the beauty of our home planet during another Earth orbit burn," the company said.
Over the weekend, Blue Ghost got its first look at its final destination: the Moon. Firefly shared new images of Earth's only natural satellite in the distance.

After 45 days of spaceflight, Blue Ghost will attempt to land on the near side of the Moon near a volcanic feature called Mons Latreille within Mare Crisium.

After hours of evening lightning delays and towering clouds, SpaceX crews waited until after midnight to launch SiriusXM's latest geostationary satellite from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The Falcon 9 rocket propelled off the pad at 12:54 a.m. Saturday, June 7, and delivered the third-generation, Maxar Space Systems-manufactured SXM-10 satellite into orbit. "SXM-10 is the latest high-powered satellite joining SiriusXM's fleet, and will help provide continuous, reliable delivery of SiriusXM's audio entertainment and information services to consumers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean," Cori Brendel, a senior software engineer, said during the SpaceX launch webcast. "There are more than 165 million SiriusXM-equipped vehicles on the road today that rely on SiriusXM's proprietary satellite network," Brendel said. Cape Canaveral: Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, Axiom, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral Starting shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, meteorologists issued a series of lightning warnings and a wind advisory for the Space Force installation and NASA's neighboring Kennedy Space Center. The wind advisory remained until effect until 11:55 p.m. — more than a half-hour past the launch window's original 11:19 p.m. opening time. All told, SpaceX crews pushed back the target liftoff time five times. The SiriusXM SXM-10 mission clocked in as the 48th orbital rocket launch thus far during 2025 from Florida's Space Coast. In early December, a SpaceX Falcon 9 launched the SiriusXM SXM-9 satellite from KSC. Maxar developed the SXM-9 and SXM-10 satellites per a 2021 agreement, with two more in the works. "SXM-11 and -12 will be twin high-powered digital audio radio satellites, built on Maxar's proven 1300-class platform at the company's manufacturing facilities in Palo Alto and San Jose, California," a Maxar press release said. "Maxar has been building satellites for SiriusXM for more than two decades, including the first-generation Sirius satellites launched in 2000; the second-generation Sirius satellites launched in 2009 and 2013; and the company's current third-generation satellites, the first one of which started service in 2021," the press release said. Next on the Eastern Range calendar, SpaceX will launch Axiom Space's commercial astronauts to the International Space Station on a Dragon spacecraft. Liftoff is scheduled for 8:22 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The nights surrounding June 7 will see Jupiter and Mercury crowd together close to the horizon in the northwestern sky. Stargazers in the U.S. will need a clear horizon to spot the planetary duo hanging less than 10 degrees (about a fist's width at arm's length) above the western horizon when the sun sets on June 6, with Jupiter positioned to the upper left of Mercury. The planets will only be visible for around 45 minutes after sunset, at which time they will follow our star below the horizon. The following evenings will see fleet-footed Mercury draw level with Jupiter, before rising above and away from the gas giant in the night sky as a result of the smaller world's tight orbit around the sun. On June 7, the planets will pass a little over two degrees from each other - close enough to fit comfortably inside the field of view of a pair of 10x50 binoculars. Ensure that the sun has set entirely below the horizon before you point any binoculars or telescopic gear in its direction. Side by side in the night sky, the two points of light appear similar in nature, belying the extreme differences of the solar system bodies they represent. Jupiter is a gas giant and the largest planet in our solar system, capable of fitting the smallest planet - rocky Mercury - within its expanse many thousands of times over. It takes Jupiter 12 Earth years to complete a single lap of our star while travelling at an average orbital distance of 484 million miles (778 million kilometers). Counterintuitively, the gas giant has the shortest day of any planet in the solar system, taking a mere 9.9 hours to spin on its axis, according to NASA. Mercury, on the other hand, is separated on average by 29 million miles (47 million kilometers) from our star and completes a circuit of the sun every 88 Earth days — much shorter than the 176 Earth days that it takes for the tortured world to complete a full day-night cycle.
