Google finally confirms when we can expect Android 16 to drop

The Android Show might be over, but news from Google's most important Android-related events continue to surface. Although it didn't issue any statements regarding the release of Android 16, Google confirmed the new version of the ecosystem will arrive 'next month.'
The company's president of the Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, told journalists and other attendees at the event that they should 'watch out for updates coming to your Pixel devices starting next month,' Droid-Life reports. Unfortunately, if you won't get Android 16 in June, as Google's official hinted earlier this week. According to Samat, Android 16 will be available for Samsung and other devices sometime 'this summer.'
Because Google said Pixel devices will be the first to receive the Android 16 update in June and Samsung's phones won't get it until later on, there's a high chance that One UI 8 will drop around the same time the South Korean company introduces the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.

Samsung's flagship foldables are expected to be unveiled in July and both will ship with Android 16 right out of the box. Samsung has already started testing One UI 8, so a July or August release makes sense if nothing bad happens during the developing cycle.As far as other brands go, it's hard to tell when they'll start rolling out the Android 16 update, but it's probably safe to assume that will happen soon after all the eligible Pixel devices receive the update.
According to previous reports, Google will release Android 16 for Pixel devices on June 3, which comes in line with what the Mountain View company said during its Android Show earlier this week. Even if the update won't be available in the first week of June, at least we know it will arrive sometime next month. If you own a Pixel phone or tablet, you should definitely watch out for the update starting in June.
Meanwhile, Google has just released another Android 16 beta build, which addresses several major issues that have been flagged by testers. If you're enrolled in the beta program, you can already download Android 16 beta 4.1.

Have you noticed that application processors are getting more powerful and energy efficient every two to three years? That's because foundries develop lower process nodes resulting in smaller transistors that are show-horned into semiconductors. The more transistors inside a chip, known as the Transistor Count, the more powerful and energy-efficient a chip is. Also important is the Transistor Density which measures the number of transistors per square millimeter (Tr/mm²). Smaller node numbers usually indicate the higher density of a chip. A higher Transistor Density means that more transistors can be packed into the same physical space. Or, the foundry could make a chip with the same number of transistors much smaller. Higher density chips mean that the component can have a smaller die size allowing more to be cut from a silicon wafer thus reducing the cost of each chip. When transistors are closer together, which happens when a chip has a high Transistor Density, the electrical signals have less space to travel reducing latency and improving performance. According to Jeff Pu, an analyst with GF Securities, next year the iPhone 18 series will be powered by the A20 and A20 Pro application processors. These chipsets will be built by TSMC using its first-generation 2nm node known as N2. Thus, the A20 and A20 Pro will be the first 2nm processors found inside an iPhone and it will happen with next year's iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro models respectively. Pu adds that in addition to being built using TSMC's 2nm process node, next year's iPhone application processors could feature a new packaging design called Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM). With this new design, multiple chips are integrated into the wafer before the latter is diced into individual chips. This would allow memory to be closer to parts of the chipset that use it such as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. The shorter transits will improve the performance of the chip while allowing the phone to run cooler. It also could improve the handset's battery life. The size of the A20 and A20 Pro should be smaller than the A19 and A19 Pro SoCs that will power the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro lines this year. The smaller die size is expected to help make the A20 and A20 Pro as much as 15% faster than its predecessor and up to 30% more efficient.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 in early July at its next Unpacked event, according to a previous rumor, and today we have yet another rumor talking about the location that the company has chosen. According to this report from its home of Korea, the next Unpacked event will take place in New York City. We still don't have an exact date rumored, only "early July". Samsung last unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Flip4 in New York in 2022, but that was a virtual event. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Ultra teaser The last time it chose New York for a physical launch event (as the one next month should be) was in 2019 when it made the Galaxy Note10 official. So it's been a while, but it's now looking like Samsung is returning to the most iconic city in the US. Earlier today, the company teased the Galaxy Z Fold7 Ultra, which may launch alongside the 'vanilla' Fold7 - or maybe these two are one and the same device, that's also a possibility. The Ultra could be an even higher-end book-style foldable compared to the Fold7, or it may be the name Samsung will choose to use for its oft-rumored tri-fold device. Undoubtedly, more rumors and leaks will surface between now and early next month to let us know more. Either way, it's looking like the next Unpacked event could be packing a lot of devices, considering the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE is also likely to make its debut on that occasion. Source (in Korean)

Samsung launched the Galaxy A16 back in October, and it's now working on its successor, the Galaxy A17. While we're most likely still a few months away from this model's introduction, a new rumor out of Korea today has some good news for those looking forward to its release. Apparently, the Galaxy A17's main camera will have optical image stabilization (OIS). Once a feature exclusive to flagships, this has trickled down Samsung's Galaxy A series of mid-rangers in the past few years, and now it seems like it's ready to make it to one of its entry-level devices as well. To keep costs down, Samsung is considering using an OIS system that uses springs, which is allegedly 20% cheaper compared to existing OIS implementations. Samsung Galaxy A16 So far, OIS has made it as low as the Galaxy A2x series with the A26 most recently featuring the tech. Obviously, Samsung wants to use the addition of OIS to the Galaxy A17 as a key differentiator compared to its competitors, and thus increase sales. Whether that works remains to be seen, but we are glad to see such features that used to be flagship-only not so many years ago making their way to even low-end handsets like this one.
