Boston Celtics Sign Head Coach Joe Mazzulla to Multi-Year Extension
It made that more than a proclamation Friday, announcing it has signed Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension. Length and details of the new deal were not released.
In a statement, Mazzulla called his new pact with the team "a blessing."
"I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children," Mazzulla said. "We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad's mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston."
Mazzulla, 37, is coming off his third season as Boston's coach and has guided the team to the playoffs each season, including the franchise's 18th NBA title to cap the 2023-24 season. He was the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when 35-year-old Bill Russell led the Celtics to the championship as a player-coach.
Under Mazzulla, the Celtics have won at least 57 games each of those seasons and topped 60 victories in each of the last two.
Though Stevens has never publicly discussed the details of Mazzulla's contract, the coach was initially given an extension shortly after having the interim tag lifted in February 2023. Stevens confirmed in June that Mazzulla had received at least one additional extension prior to his latest one.
"He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans," Stevens said in a statement. "He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach — including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics."
Mazzulla originally joined the Celtics in 2019 and spent the next three seasons as an assistant before becoming interim head coach after former boss Ime Udoka was suspended by the team prior to the start of the 2022-23 season.

Brewers move forward with game vs. Mets as scheduled despite flooding, road closures
As Wisconsin is hit with heavy rains and flash flooding, the Milwaukee Brewers are moving ahead with Sunday's game as scheduled. The game, against the New York Mets, is set to take place in Milwaukee's American Family Field at 1:10 p.m. local time, with the Brewers one win away from a series sweep. The team announced Sunday morning that they would be playing as planned, but warned fans about significant road closures into the stadium. In addition, about half of the parking lots around the stadium are closed due to standing water, with the team adding that fans will not be guaranteed parking even if they paid for it in advance. Additionally, Sunday's game was set to be a Jacob Misiorowski t-shirt giveaway, with the Brewers planning to give away the shirts to the first 25,000 fans. The team said that the giveaway will still be happening, but a second Misiorowski shirt giveaway will be scheduled on another game to accommodate fans who won't be able to make it. The Milwaukee area was hit with excessive heavy rains starting on Saturday, hitting a two-day rainfall record in the area, per the National Weather Service. The area received 7.96 inches between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, though though some parts of Milwaukee received as many as 10 inches of rain. Due to the weather, rainwater started to fall onto American Family Field on Saturday during the Brewers' 7-4 win over the Mets, despite the roof being closed. After the game, the storm was still going in full force as fans were trying to leave the stadium. Videos and photos on social media show flooding on the roads and lots around the stadium well into the night, and on Sunday mornign. Ahead of Sunday's game, Brewers president of business operations Rick Schlesinger told reporters the reseasoning behind letting the game go on as scheduled. "Obviously it's not a simple situation. The fact is the building is in great shape, so we're very fortunate that there was no damage," Schlesinger said, via Adam McCalvy. "After talking internally ... we felt that it was the right thing to do to still play the game. There are ways to get here. Obviously, the fans know that the normal access points are gonna be a little compromised, so they're gonna make alternate routes. "We decided that, given that this is the last time the Mets are gonna be here this year, in the regular season, given that the ballpark is in fine shape," he continued, "we felt we could play the game under these circumstances. The fans that can come, that's great. Fans that can't, again, they won't be negatively impacted by the fact that they can't use their ticket. We'll make that exchange available to them, and they'll come to another game." With Sunday's game continuing as planned, Brewers are set for a sweep over the Mets, after beating New York 3-2 and 7-4 on Friday and Saturday. Quinn Priester will take to the mound for Milwaukee, while Sean Manaea will pitch for the Mets.

Yankees' Aaron Judge ‘optimistic' he'll return to outfield sooner rather than later
Aaron Judge continues progressing well in his throwing program. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that he threw Wednesday in Texas, Friday, Saturday, and was planning on doing so again prior to Sunday's series finale in the Bronx. Each day he's been getting 'noticeably better' and the skipper says that he's optimistic he'll be able to return to the outfield sooner rather than later. Judge hasn't played the field since July 25 due to a flexor strain in his right elbow. The 33-year-old was activated from the IL this week but has been limited to just DH duties as he continues gradually working his way through his recovery from the injury. He's gone 3-for-12 with three walks and an RBI in four starts since returning. Boone flirted with the idea of running Giancarlo Stanton back in the outfield for the second straight day with Judge occupying the DH spot Sunday, but the team decided they wanted to play things safe. 'We want to be realistic with that,' he said. 'I could definitely see him maybe getting back out there for the Minnesota series, and then continue paying attention to how Judge is doing with his return.' Saturday marked Stanton's first outfield appearance since the 2023 season.
