Bhubaneswar: Rashtriya Suraksha Nagarik Samaj holds 'Tiranga Yatra' to honour armed forces
The event saw enthusiastic participation from locals, expressing their solidarity and respect towards the nation's soldiers.
The yatra highlighted the community's commitment to supporting the armed forces and remembering their sacrifices.
In a major public outreach, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a nationwide Tiranga Yatra on Tuesday. The yatra aims to honour the valour of Indian soldiers and inform citizens about Operation Sindoor's recent success.
BJP's 'Tiranga Yatra', which began on Tuesday, will continue till May 23. On Wednesday, the BJP organised the 'Tiranga Yatra' in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha.
Today, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan led the Tiranga Yatra rally in Sambalpur, Odisha, in solidarity with the Indian armed forces.
The rally witnessed enthusiastic participation as people joined to express their support and pride for the armed forces. The event aimed to honour the dedication and sacrifices of the defence personnel.
On Thursday, BJP MP Naveen Jindal led a 'Tiranga Yatra' at Jindal Steel and Power's Angul steel plant in Odisha. Thousands participated in the patriotic march to honour the Indian Armed Forces following the success of Operation Sindoor.
During the event, Jindal also announced a financial contribution of Rs 5 crores to the families of the security personnel who have lost their lives and to those whose houses have been damaged in J&K.
'In Jindal Steel and Power's Angul steel plant, we conducted a 'Tiranga Yatra' in which thousands of people participated. We aimed to thank our Armed Forces personnel and PM Modi for the success of Operation Sindoor.'
During the event, Jindal also announced a financial contribution of Rs 5 crores to the families of the security personnel who have lost their lives and to those whose houses have been damaged in J&K.

Further, Jindal criticised Turkey's stance on the India-Pakistan conflict and said, 'The way Turkey openly supported Pakistan has upset our people, and this will give a major blow to Turkey. I hope Turkey will realise its mistake and correct it.'
Meanwhile, BJP workers also organised a 'Tiranga Yatra' in Srinagar. The yatra commenced from Sheri Kashmir Park to Lal Chowk and was led by BJP leader and Chairperson of J-K Waqf Board Darakhshan Andrabi.
Darakhshan Andrabi commended the Indian Armed Forces over the success of Operation Sindoor and emphasised that every Indian citizen is proud of the Indian soldiers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She dedicated the 'Tiranga Rally' to the unity and pride of the country, which is a message for the entire world.
In the early hours of May 7, the Indian Armed Forces conducted strikes at nine terror hideouts in the deep areas of Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) under the 'Operation Sindoor' in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. (ANI)

Govt to criminalise promotion of online money gaming
The government plans to criminalise the offering or promotion of online money gaming and make it an offence for banks, financial institutions or individuals to facilitate fund transfers related to such activities. A bill to regulate the online gaming industry by prohibiting online money gaming was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday and is expected to be introduced in the Lok Sabha tomorrow. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 seeks to regulate the sector by promoting e-sports and online social games while banning online money gaming. The Bill also prohibits advertisements for money gaming platforms and prescribes penalties and fines for violations, with stricter punishment for repeat offenders. It prohibits offering, aiding, abetting, inducing or otherwise in the offering of any online money gaming service and declares it as an offence. Authorities will also be empowered to block access to prohibited games and seize related property to ensure compliance. Government sources said online money gaming is increasingly being used as a channel for money laundering, fraudulent transactions and other illicit activities, including cybercrime and terror financing. Offshore platforms have also been able to evade Indian tax and legal obligations, further complicating the situation. The absence of a central regulator has left the industry without uniform standards for content, user safety or financial practices, leaving players vulnerable and the sector without a coherent growth path. According to the government, in the absence of a clear framework, both e-sports and online social games in India continue to operate in a regulatory grey zone, restricting the sector's growth while exposing users, particularly young audiences, to various risks. Officials noted that there is currently no central authority overseeing online money gaming, while judicial interpretations of the distinction between 'games of skill' and 'games of chance' have been inconsistent, resulting in legal uncertainty and weak enforcement. The Bill will accord formal recognition and governance of e-Sports, 'enabling India to tap into the global competitive gaming ecosystem, promote sportsmanship, and open new career opportunities for youth'. The government claims that establishing institutional mechanisms for both e-Sports and online social games will support innovation, attract responsible investment, and ensure alignment with international best practices. The bill envisages the establishment of a new regulatory authority with an initial capital outlay of ₹50 crore and an annual recurring expenditure of Rs 20 crore. Implementation measures are expected to be rolled out within six months of Cabinet approval.

‘Collapse of governance': Cong, AAP hit out at BJP as waterlogging paralyses Chandigarh
As the heavy rainfall that lashed Chandigarh on Tuesday again exposed the fragility of the city's infrastructure, both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party- (BJP-) led Municipal Corporation (MC), saying that this is the 'collapse of governance' and that the party's development model has been 'exposed'. Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee president H S Lucky said that the MC has 'completely failed' in ensuring basic flood management despite being in power for years. Lucky said that while Chandigarh proudly holds the second rank in the Swachh Survekshan survey, just one hour of rainfall was enough to paralyse traffic, disrupt daily life, and leave residents stranded across several parts of the city. 'This is not just waterlogging — this is the collapse of governance. The city came to a grinding halt because the BJP has failed to create even a basic drainage and disaster-preparedness system,' he remarked. Lucky further pointed out that nine out of the last ten mayors of Chandigarh have been from the BJP, yet little to nothing has been done to strengthen civic infrastructure. 'The BJP has enjoyed power in the Municipal Corporation for years, but the condition of the city's roads and drains clearly shows their negligence. Citizens are paying the price for political apathy,' he added. The Congress leader demanded immediate corrective measures from the municipal authorities to restore public safety and prevent such chaos from recurring in the future. He urged the administration to initiate a complete overhaul of the city's drainage and urban planning systems, ensuring that residents do not continue to suffer during the monsoon season. 'The people of Chandigarh deserve better governance and accountable leadership. It is time the municipal authorities wake up to their responsibilities,' Lucky said. Meanwhile, the AAP also came down heavily on the BJP-led MC, saying that the downpour has 'exposed the so-called development model of the BJP,' as flooded streets, stranded vehicles, and hours of traffic snarls left citizens struggling. 'For years, the Municipal Corporation has been under BJP's control. Crores of rupees from the budget went into contractors' pockets, yet the city neither got a robust drainage system nor a flood management plan. The BJP has treated Chandigarh only as a vote bank, ignoring the real issues of its citizens,' AAP Chandigarh president Vijay Pal Singh said. He further questioned the utilisation of civic funds, pointing out that the cleaning and maintenance of drains were often carried out only on paper. Singh demanded a high-level probe into the alleged negligence and corruption, with strict action against officials and contractors found guilty. 'The BJP is only skilled in hoardings, advertisements, and sloganeering. Their real contribution to the people is roads full of potholes and waterlogging,' the AAP city chief concluded.

India's richest families benefit from Russian crude oil deals: Bessent
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed some of the 'richest families in India' benefited from the purchase of Russian crude oil, while reiterating plans to boost tariffs on the South Asian nation. 'We have planned to up the tariffs on India — these are secondary tariffs for buying the sanctioned Russian oil,' Bessent said in an interview to CNBC on Tuesday. Before Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, less than 1% of India's oil came from Russia, 'and now, I believe, it's up to 42%. So India is just profiteering,' he said. 'They are reselling, they made $16 billion on excess profits — some of the richest families in India,' he said. The latest comments show that President Donald Trump's administration is doubling down on its attack on India and indirectly Asia's richest billionaire Mukesh Ambani for purchase of cheap Russian oil. Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd., which runs the world's largest petroleum refining complex in western India, has been among the buyers of Russian crude. It has bought cargoes under long-term contracts. An email query to Reliance outside of business hours was not immediately replied to. Earlier this week, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro in a column for the Financial Times took a swipe at the South Asian country's oil tycoons and their ties to the government, saying that the surge in purchases were driven by 'profiteering by India's Big Oil lobby' and not 'domestic oil consumption needs.' Trump has threatened to raise the levies on Indian exports to the US to 50% — among the highest on any country's products — on Aug. 27. Half of that penalty is for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. The South Asian nation has defended its right to buy oil from the cheapest source, calling the additional tariffs 'unreasonable.' Historically, India hasn't been a significant importer of Russian crude, depending more heavily on the Middle East. That changed in 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine and a $60-per-barrel price cap imposed by the Group of Seven nations that aimed to limit the Kremlin's oil revenue while keeping supplies flowing globally. India's ability to purchase discounted cargoes was a feature of that mechanism acknowledged by US officials. Bessent defended the administration's lack of secondary tariffs on China, which buys more crude oil from Russia than India. China was importing 13% of its oil from Russia before the 2022 invasion, and now it's 16%, 'so China has a diversified input of their oil,' he said.
