Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd has welcomed the state government's implementation of the Water Resources Assurance Scheme (Skim Jaminan Air Mentah or SJAM).
SJAM is an initiative to ensure continuous clean water supply, even in the event of raw water source pollution.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari witnessed the handover ceremony and commissioning of the SJAM Pump Stations (packages A and C) in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor.
The event marked a critical milestone in Selangor's long-term strategy to address raw water pollution, which has caused major water supply disruptions since 2020.
SJAM aims to ensure the continuous operation of main water treatment plants and prevent water supply interruptions.
The system uses alternative raw water supply from the Hybrid Off-River Augmentation Storage (Horas) 600 and Hang Tuah Pond.
It is channelled directly to the inlet of water treatment plants at Rantau Panjang, Sungai Selangor Phase (SSP) 1, SSP 2 and SSP 3, thus bypassing any polluted river sources.
'SJAM is not only aimed at tackling pollution, but it is also part of the state's long-term plan to ensure the continuity of raw water supply in the face of climate change and drought,' Amirudin said in his speech.
'I am confident that with SJAM, Selangor is now better equipped to prevent up to 95% of treatment plant shutdowns caused by river pollution,' he added.
State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim launched Package B under the same scheme last November.
Air Selangor chief executive officer Adam Saffian Ghazali said, 'Air Selangor welcomes the SJAM project as it not only protects the continuity of our water treatment plant operations but also strengthens public confidence in reliability of the water system in Selangor.'
'As the implementation partner, Air Selangor will continue working closely with the state government and relevant agencies to ensure the system operates efficiently for the benefit of our 9.62 million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.'
Adam Saffian said Air Selangor also supported the state government's multi-layered approach to water sustainability, which includes the Zero-Discharge Policy, Polluters Pay Principle and river-monitoring programmes in collaboration with non-governmental organisations.
Also present at the handover ceremony were Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin, Selangor Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Johary Anuar and Selangor Speaker Lau Weng San.

All abuzz over Amirudin's future

KLANG: Talk had been rife that with the resignation of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from the Cabinet, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari may be moved up to be made a federal minister. Sources within PKR as well as the state administration had also said that Seri Setia assemblyman and chairman of the state Islamic and cultural innovation committee Dr Fahmi Ngah was one of the main candidates who could replace Amirudin as mentri besar. No one had voiced out against the strong possibility of Amirudin being moved from the state to the federal government. However, following Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's announcement that he will be leaving Umno for PKR, efforts have started rolling in to retain the status quo in the Selangor state administration. Selangor DAP chairman Ng Sze Han, his Amanah counterpart Datuk Izham Hashim and state PKR deputy chief Datuk Borhan Aman Shah issued a joint statement yesterday saying Pakatan Harapan component parties wanted Amirudin to complete his full term as mentri besar. 'This support (for Amirudin) is in line with the need for the Selangor state administration to remain stable and strong to implement the various welfare programmes and policies that have been planned,' said the trio. They named the Second Selangor Plan, the development of the third port in Pulau Carey and the construction of the Shah Alam Stadium Complex as among the plans undergoing the process of completion under Amirudin's purview. 'The continuity of the main state leadership will deliver a positive message to investors and the business community in Selangor,' said the statement.

Delay use of commercial LPG, burdens small traders

Rosol also stressed that any subsidy restructuring must be carried out cautiously, with clear communication and appropriate support incentives. The government is urged to postpone the mandatory use of 14-kilogramme commercial LPG cylinders for small traders. Inset: Rosol – Stock photo KUALA LUMPUR – The government has been urged to postpone the mandatory implementation of the use of 14-kilogramme commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for small traders, which took effect on May 1. Hulu Terengganu Member of Parliament Datuk Rosol Wahid said the move not only caused operational costs to surge by up to threefold but also put pressure on small traders already struggling to stay afloat. 'Many food business owners have complained to me that they previously spent around RM2,600 a month on gas, but now they are forced to bear costs reaching RM7,000 after being directed to use commercial LPG,' he said in a statement on Thursday. The former Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) deputy minister said the situation worsened as many traders became targets of Op Gasak over the past three weeks, with some fined and their gas cylinders confiscated by the authorities. 'I sympathise with the plight of small traders who are not only burdened by the high cost of living but are now facing pressure from a hastily implemented policy by the Madani government,' he said. Rosol also stressed that any subsidy restructuring must be carried out cautiously, with clear communication and appropriate support incentives. 'The chain reaction from this cost increase will ultimately be borne by consumers. Don't be unjust to the people,' he added. Therefore, he urged the government to postpone the implementation until a targeted aid plan and suitable support measures are introduced for small traders. 'At the very least, the government must have a dedicated plan to ease the cost burden so that end users do not have to bear the sudden impact,' he said.

Selangor Launches KDE Initiative To Streamline Funeral Aid

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government today launched the Khairat Darul Ehsan (KDE) initiative as a single entity to channel financial aid of RM1,000 to the next of kin of deceased individuals to help ease the burden of funeral expenses. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that previously, financial assistance for the next of kin of the deceased was distributed through separate programmes such as Skim Mesra, Iltizam Selangor Sihat (ISS), and Skim Insurans Am Selangor (INSAN). He said the Selangor government had allocated RM20 million for the implementation of KDE, compared to RM12 million previously under Skim Mesra, ISS, and INSAN, which benefited 5,995 recipients. 'The implementation of KDE also streamlines the provision of death benefit aid, which was previously channelled through various individual programmes,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS) Volunteers and Khairat Darul Ehsan at an event here today. Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (YAWAS) has been appointed as the main implementing agency for the initiative. Amirudin said KDE was part of the state government's efforts to enhance the delivery of benefits to the people, in line with the promises made under the '5 Commitments for 5 Years' manifesto. 'This initiative also aligns with the objectives of the First Selangor Plan to make Selangor a liveable state through improved wellbeing and social inclusivity,' he said. He said there were two eligibility categories for applying to KDE, namely the general public and Persons with Disabilities (OKU). For the general category, applicants must be aged 50 and above, Malaysian citizens, and registered voters in Selangor.
