She made the most of it, and then some.
The 6-foot-7 Cardoso recorded a career-high 27 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks in the Sky's 97-86 win against the Los Angeles Sparks.
Her "Sky Scraper" duo with Chicago forward and fellow 2024 first-round draft pick Angel Reese was in full force, too. Reese had 18 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
The most unexpected moment of Cardoso's outstanding performance came in the third quarter when she beat the shot clock with the first 3-pointer of her WNBA career.

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME????" wrote the Chicago Sky's official account on X.
While the social media admin may have been in shock, one person who was not was the Sparks' defender on the play, Rickea Jackson.

Jackson, another member of the 2024 WNBA Draft class, was the victim of Cardoso's first career triple in college when the South Carolina center drilled one against Jackson's Tennessee — a buzzer-beater that kept the Gamecocks' undefeated record intact.
Chicago head coach Tyler Marsh confirmed that Cardoso was leaving after the game to join the Brazil national team for the AmeriCup tournament in Chile, which begins on Saturday. He expects her to return on July 6 against the Minnesota Lynx.
She is on the Brazilian team with fellow WNBA player Damiris Dantas of the Indiana Fever. Cardoso was named AmeriCup MVP in 2023.

Angel Reese sets WNBA rebounds mark, offense ‘finally coming through'

June 30 (UPI) -- Angel Reese continues to pull down rebounds at a WNBA record rate, but says she also is recovered from a "terrible" offensive start and is "finally coming through" for the Chicago Sky. Reese made the comments in her postgame news conference after totaling a game-high 24 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and a steal in a 92-85 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday in Los Angeles. "I went through a storm for the first eight games where I couldn't finish and it was frustrating," Reese said. "But I trusted my work and my teammates trusted my work. "I'm finally coming through and finally finishing efficiently and it's leading to wins for us." With her 16 rebounds, Reese became the first player in WNBA history to collect at least 15 rebounds in four consecutive games. Her record rebounding streak started June 22, with a 19-board performance. She followed that game with 17- and 18-rebound efforts before setting a new WNBA record against the Sparks. Reese scored 18 points in the second half, including 11 in the fourth quarter of Sunday's win. She went 10 of 19 from the floor. The All-Star forward went just 21 of 68 from the floor through her first seven games this season, making 30.9% of her attempts. Reese is shooting 47.1% (48 of 102) over nine appearances since then. She shot at a 48.9% clip over her last three starts. The Sky went 2-5 during Reese's seven-game slump, when she averaged 9.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game. They are 3-4 over her last seven games, when she averaged 15.1 points, 13.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks. "I struggled in the first eight or nine games in not being where I should have been," Reese said. "Obviously, it happens. I was very hard on myself, tough conversations with myself, tough conversations with people that kept it real with me in telling me what I can get to work on and need to be better at and also getting into a new role. "This is the first time in a long time I'm being a point guard and being a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and guarding all five positions too. Just trying to come out with that, but I trust my work. I have great conversations with [WNBA legend] Lisa Leslie, talk to [former Sky coach] Teresa Weatherspoon every day. Just being able to have great people in my corner that really push me and know my potential." The Sky trailed by as many as seven points in the third quarter before rallying to earn their second win in three games. They outshot the Sparks 48.5% to 41.7%, including a 42.3% to 32.1% edge in 3-point shooting. Veteran guard Ariel Atkins totaled 20 points in the victory. Fellow guards Kia Nurse and Rachel Banham and forward/center Elizabeth Williams chipped in 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Sky. Reese, whose 24 points were the second-most scored Sunday by any WNBA player, is now averaging 12.4 points and a WNBA-high 12.6 rebounds per game this season. She made 40.6% of her shots through her first 16 appearances of 2025, an improvement from her .391 shooting percentage as a rookie. "I'm just trusting my work," Reese said. "I put my head down every day and just grind. That's all I do. I don't do it for cameras. I don't do it for publicity. I don't post me in the gym and I'm not going to. I put my head down every day and work. I'm very versatile in what I do on and off the court and I prioritize when I'm at work. When I'm at work it's time for work. "I come here every day and try to do everything for my teammates. ... It means a lot to me to be named with such great players and just continue to know I can be better every day and continue to be great." The Sky (5-11), who sit in 10th place in the WNBA standings, will take on the first-place Minnesota Lynx (14-2) at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday in Minneapolis. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. Fever Coach Stephanie White's Curious Reaction to Caitlin Clark Being Named All-Star Captain

The WNBA announced on Sunday that Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark emerged as the top vote-recipient after the second round of fan voting for the upcoming All-Star Game in Indianapolis. Considering the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year's unmatched popularity, it is no surprise that Clark received the most fan votes among all players in the league. Fever head coach Stephanie White did not seem surprised by the news, either. In fact, the veteran shot-caller was more curious about how Clark would handle her duties as team captain. "You saw it with the NBA and the ability for fans to show up and show out," White said, via Joshua Heron of IndyStar. "Caitlin being able to be a captain, she's going to put on her GM hat. We'll see how that works out for her." Being a captain will require Clark to pick her own team in the All-Star Game draft. Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier came in second in the fan voting, which means that she will captain the opposing team. Clark and Collier will exchange picks as they build their respective 11-woman rosters. White is already looking forward to Clark playing the role of a team general manager as the 23-year-old gets to create her own squad from scratch. On top of that, White also expressed her excitement over the festivities, which, for the first time in league history, will take place in Indianapolis. "What an outstanding opportunity for our city to show up, to show love to the players in the WNBA and embrace what we love, and that's basketball," White said. Angel Reese Drops ‘Mebounds' Merch To Support Prevention Of Cyberbullying

Angel Reese, like she does on the court, is continuing to follow her shot and turn missed shots into opportunities. This time, the missed shots are criticisms of her ability to turn her own missed shots into rebounds, which critics have pejoratively termed 'mebounds.' Reese is taking the slight, those shots at her, and turning them into opportunities for charitable donations. As The Athletic reports, Reese, who recently filed a trademark for the term 'mebounds,' has followed that effort up with a new merchandise collection utilizing the term, with a percentage of the proceeds set to 'support cyberbullying prevention through The Angel C. Reese Foundation.' There may also be more from Reese on the way; she also filed a trademark for the term 'Reesebounds.' The 'mebounds' collection is affordable; most of the pieces, which include hats, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and slides, range in price from $28 to $75. Advertisement Reese, ever the savvy businesswoman, noted in a TikTok video posted around the time that the trademark was filed, says that she saw the term as a profitable way to increase her brand profile. 'Whoever came up with the 'mebounds' thing, y'all ate that up because 'mebounds,' rebounds, 'crebounds' … anything that comes off that board, it's mine,' Reese said, the last part an allusion to a comment made by a play-by-play announcer who was on the call for one of her games. 'And a brand? That's six figures right there.' Reese filed the 'mebounds' trademark application on June 14, and she filed the application to trademark 'Reesebounds' on June 20, both of which are still pending examination intended for apparel use. In only her second season in the WNBA, Reese has already established herself as a historically significant rebounder, holding the most rebounds in the first 50 games of a career in WNBA history. She is also the fastest player in WNBA history to record 500 points and 500 rebounds, achieving this feat in 38 games. Advertisement Reese is currently averaging a double-double, putting up 11.7 points a game and 12.3 boards a game to go along with 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 39% from the field for the Sky. Reese also recently recorded her first career triple-double on June 15. Reese has been asked to do more this season in head coach Tyler Marsh's system, where she is being used in a similar manner as Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson and New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart, she is expected to bring the ball up the floor after rebounds and is also responsible for facilitating the offense. Reese has also been surrounded by veterans in this year's iteration of the Sky, a departure from the team's composition last year, which Marsh told the outlet would help Reese develop her other skills. 'It's (veteran experience) something you can't really put a price on,' Marsh said. 'Those are people who've been around this league and have shown their value a long time on the court, but they certainly have value in our locker room as well when it comes to our younger players, and kind of showing them the ropes on how to work, and how to be a professional.' Advertisement He continued, 'It's about creating space, and making defenses honest, what it ultimately does is open up the paint. We don't want to limit (Reese) just to being a rebounder, because she's so much more than that, her potential is so much more than that.'
