We've been privy to the renderings of the Genesis-planned LMDh (Le Mans Daytona hybrid), hypercar competitor coming to WEC and IMSA racing series within the next year or two. But the big reveal of the polished, fiery orange-clad physical competitor for its Genesis Magma Racing effort — the GMR-001 hypercar — happened Wednesday on the US shore at this week's New York International Auto Show.

Like many of the hypercar manufacturers competing in both series across the pond thus far, you can see where Genesis has pulled design cues from its road cars – noting the recognizable 'two-line' lighting, or the slightly separated stacked 'strips' of headlights like you see on its models – same for the rear 'taillights.' The sweeping curves of the body and panel work were done by Genesis' Design Europe's chief creative officer, Luc Donckerwolke.

Underneath and new to note is a flat underbody plate has to support aerodynamic efficiency, with integrated inlets that are meant to help enhance the car's thermal performance. Beyond the bodywork though, the chassis development remains a partnership project between the Korean outfit and ORECA.

What's not changing as far as we know, as no further information was shared by Genesis at the time of the physical car's reveal is the hypercar's planned V8 underpinnings expected to be paired with the series' spec hybrid system.
What we do know is that the V8 is being developed from similar technology used in its inline four-cylinder 1.6-liter turbo engine from the Hyundai i20 N Rally 1. The technical director at Hyundai behind the LMDh engine program told Motorsport.com in December that the development from a 1.6-litre inline four to a 3.2-litre in the short time window (about 16 months from inception to track) would be challenging, but the idea of making small adjustments from the four to a V8 would be more time conducive, rather than developing an entire V8 engine from the ground up.

Chances are that there will be some changes in the design and powertrain as development continues on the GMR-001, as expected. Each manufacturer who has participated in LMDh/hypercar programs has experienced similar changes prior to the final form that arrives on track for race day. And the powertrain developments are constant as the team and manufacturers behind the hybrid unit, learn how each works together.
In the interim, Genesis Magma Racing is working on gathering real world experience ahead of its WEC debut next year — with an LMP2 entry in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) championship and the team's Trajectory Program drivers Jamie Chadwick and Mathys Jaubert. It's already experienced success in the opening round of the series — scoring a win for the team's debut race at the 4 Hours of Barcelona.
The Genesis Magma Racing will set its pace in the 2026 WEC season with drivers Andre Lotterer and Pipo Derani, with plans to run an additional car in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in the States in 2027.

IMSA Detroit results, points: Acura outduels Cadillac for first victory of season

Renger van der Zande seized the lead on a bold pass with three laps remaining as the No. 93 Meyer Shank Racing ARX-06 won from the pole in Detroit, ending Porsche's win streak to start the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. Porsche Penske Motorsport was on track for a fifth consecutive victory in 2025 and its fourth with the No. 7 963, which was leading with 15 laps remaining of the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic. But Felipe Nasr yielded the lead in Turn 4 to Ricky Taylor in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac V-Series.R. Taylor led the next 10 laps before getting caught in traffic by van der Zande, who took the lead for good in Turn 1 of the nine-turn, 1.645-mile street circuit in downtown Detroit. 'Man, I loved it,' van der Zande said after his 22nd career victory in IMSA. 'I know Ricky goes for it. He's the nicest guy out of the car, but in the car, you need to watch out for the guy. He was going for it, and I was like, 'Game on. Let's see.' 'I was very strong every time in Turn 1, and he had some traffic. I thought, 'If I'm going to have a chance, it's going to be in Turn 1.' I asked the team, and they said, 'Go for it.' He had a weaker exit out of the last corner, and just, boom – I went for it. When I made the pass for the win, I was excited in the car, like a little child. It's really cool and I enjoyed it.' Said Taylor, whose team switched from Acura back to Cadillac before this season: 'A little sadness from me because we were so close to our first win with Cadillac in the GM race with everybody here. To get the 100th Cadillac podium in IMSA prototype competition feels amazing, but that one step would have been nice. It was a great fight, the team did an amazing job, the strategy was incredible. I think everything for our race went perfectly for us to go from eighth to first and almost winning.' Mathieu Jaminet finished third in the No. 6 963 for Porsche Penske Motorsport as teammate Nasr faded to fourth. Philipp Eng finished fifth in the Grand Touring Prototype category with the No. 24 BMW M Team RLL Hybrid V8 Nick Yelloly, who started the race in the No. 93 Acura, combined with van der Zande as the first team to win from the pole in GTP since Meyer Shank Racing at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in July 2023. In the GTP standings, Nasr and co-driver Nick Tandy lead by 70 points over Porsche Penske Motorsport teammates Matt Campbell and Jaminet. In the GTD Pro category, Seb Priaulx and Mike Rockenfeller won from the pole position in the No. 64 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Mustang GT3 by 1.623 seconds over the No. 3 Corvette Racing Z06 GT3.R of Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims. Laurin Heinrich and Klaus Bachler placed fifth to maintain the points lead over Garcia and Sims. Acura Ends Porsche IMSA Win Streak After Thrilling Battle in Detroit Street Course Sprint

One of the shortest races on the IMSA GTP calendar, by both time and distance, put on a larger-than-life show as BoP adjustments brought parity to the field. The Meyer Shank Racing Acuras and Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillacs put pressure on BMW and the dominant Porsche Penskes at the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic in Detroit. Nick Yelloly secured the first pole of the year for the Acura in the No. 93 ARX-06, a pass with less than five minutes remaining on the clock by his teammate Renger van der Zande would secure the win for Acura ahead of the No. 10 Cadillac of Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque and the No. 6 Porsche Penske. The championship-leading entry of the No. 7 Porsche Penske was leading with 15 minutes remaining, but Ricky Taylor was eating into the nearly 2-second lead that Felipe Nasr had put on the field since the final Full Course Yellow. Going into the turn three hairpin, Taylor tried to nudge between Nasr and the inside wall and had to back out to stop damage. On a second try heading down towards the Detroit River out of turn four, Taylor took the spot, and the No. 93 Acura and No. 6 Porsche followed. "I saw them going after each other, and I think the Porsche in front had a bit of an issue or burned its tires too much," van der Zande told the Peacock Broadcast. "At that point, I saw Ricky going for it, and I know Ricky, Ricky goes for it. Nicest guy off the car, but in the car, you have to look out for the guy." With Nasr tumbling back to fourth, this marks the first time that the championship-leading duo of Nasr and Nick Tandy finished outside of a podium position. The leaders hit the traffic of the GTD-Pro top five, who on the narrow streets of the Detroit circuit were making it as difficult to pass as they tried to hold their in-class finishing positions. Following Taylor's aggressive move on Nasr, van der Zande saw a similar opportunity in Turn one and took the lead for Acura, pulling ahead past two GTD-Pro cars. Taylor followed and had one passing opportunity, but once the Acura tasted clean air, it was on its way to victory. Ford was able to pull one out for the American manufacturers with the No. 64 Ford Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT3 piloted by Sebastian Priaulx and Mike Rockenfeller finishing ahead of the Pratt Miller Motorsports Corvette Z06 GT3.R and Pratt Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan. Hyundai just built a $7.6 billion EV factory in Georgia to compete with Tesla and GM — see inside

The Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America is an all-new $7.6 billion EV factory. HMGMA, located near Savannah, Georgia, opened its doors in March of this year. The factory will be able to build 500,000 EVs and Hybrids for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis every year. The $7.6 billion Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, or HMGMA, is one of the newest and most technologically advanced car factories in the world. The plant, located near Savannah, Georgia, opened its doors in March and will be a key production facility for Hyundai's EVs and PHEVs, as well as those belonging to its Genesis luxury brand and sister company Kia. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Genesis North America COO Tedros Mengiste cited the investment as an example of Hyundai's track record for "visionary and strategic, and long-term thinking." I recently took a behind-the-scenes tour of Hyundai's new megafactory packed with autonomous robots and state-of-the-art tech. The Hyundai Metaplant is situated on a 3,000-acre campus in the south Georgia town of Ellabell. Located just 20 miles from the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest in the US, the plant not only gives Hyundai much-needed manufacturing capacity in the US to avoid import tariffs, but it also affords the company the flexibility to export vehicles abroad. It also gives Hyundai the production footprint to compete against rivals like Tesla, GM, and Rivian, which is also building a new factory in Georgia. Driving up to the factory, it's easy to be wowed by the sheer scale of the sprawling complex. It's Hyundai Group's second car factory in the state. The company also operates a $3.2 billion, 2,200-acre facility in West Point, Georgia, that builds Kia EV and ICE SUVs. I drove to the factory in a new 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 EV SUV, which is one of the vehicles assembled at the Metaplant. The only other model assembled at the plant is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV. My tour began in the plant's modern main lobby. Hyundai broke ground on the facility in the fall of 2022 and took just two years to complete construction on the main production buildings. The Metaplant site consists of 11 buildings totalling 7.5 million square feet of space. The Metaplant is a marvel of vertical integration, with the goal of having as many key components, ranging from battery packs to seats, made on-site. Here's a Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen fuel cell semi truck used to transport parts and supplies to the factory. It's one of 21 emission-free XCIENT trucks deployed around the Metaplant site. The production process starts in the stamping shop, where sheet metal is cut and stamped into parts that will make up the frame of the car. The sheet metal is supplied by the on-site Hyundai Steel facility. Stamped parts are transported by automated guided vehicles, or AGVs. The plant employs almost 300 AGVs to shuttle everything from spare parts to partially assembled cars. The stamped metal panels are then stored in these massive racks. The Metaplant was originally expected to produce up to 300,000 electrified vehicles annually. However, Hyundai announced at the plant's grand opening in March that its capacity will be expanded to 500,000 units in the coming years as part of a new $21 billion investment in US manufacturing. Here are parts of the Ioniq 9, Hyundai's new flagship three-row EV SUV. The plant is expected to start production of its first Kia model next year. The next part of the tour is the welding shop. Here, the stamped metal pieces are welded together by robot to form the body of the vehicle. The work done by the welding robots is then inspected by the plant's human employees known as Meta Pros. The Metplant employees more than 1,300 Meta Pros, nearly 90% of whom were hired locally. There are employee meeting and break areas located along the inspection and assembly areas. An employee cafeteria with remote ordering capability is located in the main assembly building. In addition to human eyes, the vehicles are also inspected by a pair of Boston Dynamics robot dogs called Spot. In 2021, Hyundai acquired an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics in a deal that valued the company at $1.1 billion. After the inspections are complete, a robot loads the partially assembled vehicles onto a conveyor system. Next stop, the paint shop. Unfortunately, my tour did not get access to the paint shop due to concerns that outside visitors may compromise the quality of the paint application. After receiving a fresh coat of paint, the vehicles travel through a bridge to the assembly building. Here, the painted bodies are married with their battery packs and skateboard chassis. Hyundai Mobis produces the skateboard chassis in a building next door to the general assembly facility. The Metaplant's on-site battery factory, operated in a joint venture with LG, is expected to come online next year. The plant currently sources its batteries from Hyundai's other facilities, including one in North Georgia that's a joint venture with SK. The vehicles' interiors are then assembled by hand. The further along the production process, the more you see human workers on the assembly line. Partially assembled EVs are shuttled through from area to area by the automated robots. The entire facility was immaculately clean, quiet, and felt beautifully choreographed. Assembled vehicles are loaded onto different AGVs that navigate the facility by reading the QR codes embedded into the floor. These AGVs shuttle the vehicles through the plant's various quality control tests. At the end of the assembly line, completed EVs are put through their paces at the on-site test track before being sent to the vehicle preparation center, or VPC, to get them ready for shipping. Vehicles destined for dealerships in the region are put on trucks, while those traveling more than 500 miles are shipped by rail at the Metplant's on-site train terminal.
