Shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, officers were called to a traffic crash at the intersection of Dyer and Sanders.
Officers discovered that Antonio De Las Cruz, 44, had been partially ejected after hitting a tree. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, according to EPPD.
The Special Traffic Investigations unit was called to assist, and the initial investigation revealed that De La Cruz was stopped behind a vehicle on Dyer for an unknown reason, according to EPPD.
EPPD said De La Cruz then drove around the car while the traffic signal was still red and made a left turn onto Sanders, striking a tree.
A contributing factor in this collision may be alcohol, police said. This is the 36th traffic fatality compared to 39 this same time last year, according to EPPD.
The Special Traffic Investigations unit continues its investigation.

Indiantown woman charged with battery of person over 65 and of a law enforcement officer

INDIANTOWN — An Indiantown woman is in jail on charges related to throwing a glass coffee table at a man and spitting and hitting deputies the evening of Aug. 13, according to an arrest affidavit. Laurel Stephens, 63, of Indiantown was charged with battery on a person 65 or older, battery on a law enforcement officer, and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, according to her arrest affidavit. She is in the Martin County Jail on $250,000 bond, sheriff's officials stated on social media. On Aug. 13 around 8:54 p.m., three Martin County deputies responded to the Indiantown location, according to the arrest affidavit. When deputies arrived they found an 83-year-old man sitting in the driver's seat of a truck in the driveway. He had dried blood on his right cheek from a small cut and another small cut on his left ankle. The man told a deputy he was in the living room when Stephens exited her room yelling and "acting crazy," according to the arrest affidavit. She picked up the glass coffee table and threw it at him. The man then went outside and sat in the truck. He told deputies they are not in a relationship, according to the arrest affidavit. Stephens cam out of the home yelling, with her cell phone in her hand. She stopped at the gate of her fence, opened it and let her black pit bull out onto the driveway. She told deputies the dog would bite them and has "killed someone before" adding that she would "sick the dog" on them, according to the arrest affidavit. A deputy attempted to ask her questions but Stephens ignored him and continued to talk about something unrelated. A deputy held a flashlight to Stephens face, which resulted in her approaching the deputy and getting close to their face. When asked to back up she refused, and the deputy attempted to make her back up by gently pushing her back, according to the affidavit. She responded by hitting the deputy in the shoulder. Stephens kicked a deputy while still on the ground and spit in a different deputy's eye while being taken to the patrol vehicle, according to the arrest affidavit.
