Krishna river board to release 4tmc ft water to Andhra Pradesh, 10tmc ft for Telangana

Time of India22-05-2025

Vijayawada: After elaborating discussions with both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana govts, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has decided to release water to meet the drinking water needs in both the Telugu states.
However, AP will get just 4tmc ft of water against its indent for release of 10tmc ft of water.
Interestingly, Telangana is getting its full quota of 10.26tmc ft as per its indent. In fact, Telangana raised its objection to release 10tmc ft of water to AP in view of the shortage of water in both the major inter-state projects.
The three-member committee of KRMB studied the water availability in both Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar projects and lowered the minimum draw down level (MDDL) in Nagarjuna Sagar to 505ft from the 510ft, while maintaining the MDDL at 800ft in Srisailam project in view of the requirements.
The team found about 8tmc water available in Srisailam and another 12.79tmc in Nagarjuna Sagar at MDDL. Though 21.21tmc water is available in two projects, 4tmc have been deducted as evaporation loss and another 2tmc ft of water kept was reserve cushion to meet emergency needs.
Subsequently, the three-men committee made recommendation to give 4tmc to AP and 10.26 tmc to Telangana from the available pool of 14.2tmc.

AP water resources minister Nimmala Rama Naidu said that that water has been released from the Nagarjuna Sagar right canal through the KRMB from Thursday afternoon to fill the reservoirs. He mentioned that 447 drinking water reservoirs in the Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla, and Prakasam districts under the Sagar right canal will be filled with water. He directed officials from the irrigation, revenue, and RWS departments to coordinate and ensure that the water is used solely for drinking purposes.
The minister clarified that after three crop holidays, irrigation water was provided to the Nagarjuna Sagar ayacut during the last season, resulting in abundant crop yields. He said that they have also secured water to meet drinking water needs.

Temperatures rise in AP, Telangana amid slowdown of monsoon activity

The Telugu states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are currently experiencing unusual weather conditions, characterised by intense heat and occasional moderate rain. Residents are suffering from heat and heat-related illnesses, as temperatures—having recently dipped due to rain—are on the rise once more. Meteorological officials attribute the increase in temperatures, notably exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many areas, to a slowdown in the monsoon and the impact of the Rohini Karte phenomenon. The Amaravati Meteorological Centre has warned that temperatures may reach highs of 41 degrees Celsius across several districts on Thursday. It is anticipated that maximum temperatures in Andhra Pradesh could increase by 2 to 3 degrees over the next two days. In particular, districts such as Vizianagaram, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, and Krishna are expected to experience sweltering conditions, with maximum readings between 40 and 41 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is forecast for Bapatla and Palnadu districts. On Wednesday, Jangameshwarapur recorded the highest temperature at 41 degrees Celsius, with Narsapur close behind at 40.9 degrees. Other notable readings included Kavali and Nellore at 39.6 degrees, Tuni and Gannavaram at 39.4 degrees, Nandyal at 39 degrees, YSR Kadapa at 38.2 degrees, and Tirupati at 38 degrees each. In Telangana, conditions are similarly warm, as reported by the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre. The state is experiencing rising temperatures due to the slow progression of the southwest monsoon. Light rain with gusty winds up to 30 to 40 kilometres per hour is expected in some districts on Thursday and Friday. The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures could reach 38 degrees Celsius in Nalgonda and Bhadrachalam, while a minimum of 34 degrees is projected for Mahabubnagar.

Met dept extends rain, storm warning; AQI improves

New Delhi: A day after strong squally winds hit the city, the weather department issued a warning of another thunderstorm with rain in the region for an additional day. A yellow alert was issued for storms and gusty winds reaching up to 60kmph on Monday and Tuesday. However, until 8pm, no major weather activity was observed on Monday. A weather scientist noted that as per the radar imagery around 5pm, a cloud cluster moved towards Delhi. "But the latest imagery suggests that the cloud cluster has moved southeast of Delhi and is currently causing hailstorm activity over Nuh, Alwar, Bharatpur, etc," said Krishna Mishra, a scientist at India Meteorological Department, adding that there were chances that Delhi might also experience strong winds. Rain is expected on Wednesday, too, but no colour-coded warning has been issued yet. "Very light to light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50kmph, temporarily reaching up to 60kmph, is likely over many places in Delhi," forecast IMD. On Monday, the city's base station, Safdarjung, recorded the maximum temperature at 36.1 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, against 37.9 degrees on Sunday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! The winds remained southwesterly, with the speed up to 15kmph. According to IMD, the maximum temperature on Tuesday is expected to be 35-37 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the city logged 16.8mm rainfall, with very strong winds that reached up to 92kmph at Palam, resulting in the delay and diversion of several flights. The weather department expects southwesterly winds to bring additional moisture, which may lead to a thunderstorm and squally winds. Meanwhile, the city's air quality improved within the moderate category. The air quality index, on a scale of 0 to 500, was 158 against 197 a day earlier. According to the advance weather early warning system, AQI is likely to remain moderate till June 5. In the next six days, the air quality is likely to be in the moderate to poor category, EWS predicted.
