Tensions flare up between TG, AP over water release from Nagarjuna Sagar

Nagarjuna Sagar: Dispute escalated between the states of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana over water sharing from the Nagarjuna Sagar Project, specifically concerning the release of water into the right canal of the project. AP irrigation officials have released water without permission from the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB). Telangana officials have expressed strong objections and lodged complaint against AP irrigation authorities for releasing water without proper authorization. In response, AP officials maintain that they have obtained the required KRMB approval before releasing water for irrigation purposes. The Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir currently has a water storage capacity exceeding 570 feet, making water release necessary for ongoing irrigation needs. Telangana officials argue that AP's unilateral water release into the right canal, without prior information or coordination with Telangana authorities, violates established agreements and protocols governed by KRMB. This has triggered tensions, with Telangana complained to KRMB for justice . This issue touches upon the broader context of water sharing in the Krishna River basin, where both states rely on the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir for irrigation and drinking water across more than 2.3 million acres. Seasonal factors are significant, as the monsoon season replenishes reservoirs, potentially leading to further water releases downstream. The issue highlights the cyclical nature of these disputes, as water management during the agricultural season is critical. The KRMB plays a central role as the regulatory authority overseeing water allocation and distribution between the two states. Telangana accuses AP of bypassing this regulatory mechanism, while AP insists on compliance with KRMB's directives. The situation remains fluid, with stakeholders awaiting KRMB's response to Telangana's complaint. The issue underscores the unresolved nature of the water sharing conflict and the need for cooperative dialogue to manage the Krishna basin water resources effectively.

AP agrees to take up repair work at Srisailam project

HYDERABAD: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which agreed to resolve the long-standing river water disputes at a meeting in New Delhi, also ratified earlier decisions made by the Apex Council in 2020 and as per the AP Reorganisation Act, the Krishna River Management Board office will be located in AP, while the Godavari River Management Board office will be based in Telangana. Another key decision was AP agreeing to take up repairs and restoration work at the Srisailam dam, one of the oldest and most critical multi-purpose projects shared by both states. Given safety concerns over the dam's plunge pool and structural components, and since it falls under AP's jurisdiction, the Naidu govt will undertake necessary work. The project is vital to both Telugu states for meeting their irrigation and drinking water requirements. "There were no arguments or heated exchanges. The agenda did not include that issue. The Jal Shakti ministry only facilitated the talks; it did not take sides," he clarified. Taking a swipe at former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, Revanth alleged that KCR had surrendered Telangana's water rights to AP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Trade ETH/USD Without Holding Ether IC Markets Learn More Undo "Now, the Congress govt is trying to correct those mistakes. This meeting, though informal, has provided a constructive platform to move forward," he said. When asked about the credibility of the proposed committee, Revanth said: "Even laws passed by Parliament are not implemented by PM Modi, including the Reorganisation Act. If we keep doubting everything, there will be no progress. Our aim is to resolve, not prolong, these issues. We are accountable to the people of Telangana, not to political agendas." The meeting was widely seen as a promising start in breaking the deadlock on critical water-sharing concerns with both sides committed to a structured dialogue, something that has eluded the two states for nearly a decade since bifurcation of combined AP in 2014. Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy is likely to meet union railways and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Thursday.

Andhra-Telangana Meeting With Jal Shakti Ministry Washes Away Some Water-Sharing Disputes

The meeting between CR Patil, N Chandrababu Naidu, and A Revanth Reddy lasted for more than 90 minutes In a significant step towards resolving interstate river water issues, the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, along with their respective irrigation ministers and senior officials, participated in a high-level meeting convened by the union ministry of Jal Shakti in New Delhi on Wednesday. The discussions, which focused on the sharing and management of Krishna and Godavari river waters, were held in a cordial and cooperative atmosphere, said sources. The meeting between CR Patil, N Chandrababu Naidu, and A Revanth Reddy lasted for more than 90 minutes. Key agreements reached included the decision to install telemetry systems at reservoir outflows and canal entry points to ensure accurate measurement and transparency in water usage. The proposal, originally suggested by Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, was accepted by Andhra Pradesh, marking a breakthrough in building mutual trust. Both states also agreed to undertake immediate repairs and protection works for the Srisailam Project, a critical irrigation asset for the region. The restoration will be executed jointly, as per Telangana's proposal, signalling a spirit of collaboration between the two Telugu states. A major outcome of the meeting was the decision to form a joint committee comprising technical experts and senior officers from both states. This committee, which will be formally set up by next Monday, has been tasked with addressing all outstanding technical issues, including long-pending water projects in the Krishna and Godavari basins such as Polavaram, Banakacherla, and others. The Centre has directed the committee to work swiftly and submit a feasible report within a short timeframe. In terms of institutional arrangements, it was agreed that the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) will be based in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, while the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) will remain in Hyderabad, Telangana. The union ministry of Jal Shakti will supervise the functioning of the committee and coordinate inter-state consultations whenever needed. Government sources described the outcome as a 'positive development," adding that the Centre had strongly encouraged both states to come to the table and engage in dialogue to resolve disputes. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to the principle of 'Telugu states, one people", emphasising mutual respect and cooperation. If required, the Centre may convene another round of talks at the level of chief ministers or through an apex committee to further accelerate the resolution process. Both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have also been advised to hold regular interstate meetings to address ongoing concerns and chart a path forward in a time-bound manner. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 05:24 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Telemetry on Krishna River approved after Telangana's push: Minister Uttam Kumar

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have agreed to constitute a committee of senior officials and technical experts to identify and resolve all pending water-related issues, including usage patterns, project allocations and the management of river systems. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Chief Ministers A. Revanth Reddy and N. Chandrababu Naidu, convened by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on Wednesday. During a media briefing after the meeting in the presence of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that both States had reached a consensus on four major decisions aimed at addressing long-standing disputes. A key outcome was the decision to install telemetry instruments at all water-drawing points along the Krishna River and its canal systems. 'We have assured immediate release of funds to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to expedite the installation. This will bring transparency and accountability in measuring water usage at each off-take point. We have decided to complete the work on a war-footing basis,' Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy said, adding that Krishna River usage had long been a bone of contention between the two States. On the issue of the Srisailam Dam's structural integrity, the Andhra Pradesh government agreed to take up urgent repairs and rehabilitation work. 'The dam, which has shown signs of wear — particularly in the plunge pool area — will now be restored under the supervision of the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). The Union government has directed Andhra Pradesh to undertake the work on priority since the Srisailam Dam falls within their jurisdiction. Whatever needs to be done, whether in the plunge pool or other parts of the dam requiring urgent attention, will be taken up immediately,' he said. Regarding the location of the river management board offices, it was decided that the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) will be headquartered in Hyderabad, while the KRMB will function from Andhra Pradesh. 'This decision is in line with the earlier understanding reached at the Apex Council meeting in 2020, and the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act were ratified at the meeting,' the Minister said. The meeting was attended by senior officials from both States, Congress MPs, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Mallu Ravi, and representatives of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry.

TG set to expose AP over Krishna waters diversion

Hyderabad: The Telangana government is prepared to expose Andhra Pradesh on the illegal diversion of Krishna waters, as state Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy will deliver a PowerPoint presentation on the issue at Praja Bhavan on Wednesday. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is also expected to attend the programme, where he will make a statement on the government's resolve to fight Andhra Pradesh over the water sharing disputes. The event will be attended by all ministers, Congress MPs, MLAs, and MLCs. Uttam will also explain the disastrous decision by the previous BRS government to change the project's course from Tummidihatti to Medigadda, detailing its catastrophic consequences for the state's irrigation sector. Officials stated that the Irrigation Minister will present all details regarding the lifting of Krishna River water without seeking the approval of the Krishna River Management Board following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The BRS's failure to protect Telangana's interests in the utilisation of Krishna water will be highlighted in the presentation. The Minister will explain the technical issues stemming from the poor construction and management of the Sundilla, Annaram, and Medigadda barrages by the previous government. The state government has already stated that the Kaleshwaram project has plunged the state into a deep financial crisis.
