AP agrees to take up repair work at Srisailam project

HYDERABAD: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which agreed to resolve the long-standing river water disputes at a meeting in New Delhi, also ratified earlier decisions made by the Apex Council in 2020 and as per the AP Reorganisation Act, the Krishna River Management Board office will be located in AP, while the Godavari River Management Board office will be based in Telangana.
Another key decision was AP agreeing to take up repairs and restoration work at the Srisailam dam, one of the oldest and most critical multi-purpose projects shared by both states.
Given safety concerns over the dam's plunge pool and structural components, and since it falls under AP's jurisdiction, the Naidu govt will undertake necessary work. The project is vital to both Telugu states for meeting their irrigation and drinking water requirements.

Revanth dismissed speculation about a rift during the meeting, saying there was no discussion on the Godavari-Banakacherla link project proposed by Andhra Pradesh. "There were no arguments or heated exchanges. The agenda did not include that issue. The Jal Shakti ministry only facilitated the talks; it did not take sides," he clarified.
Taking a swipe at former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, Revanth alleged that KCR had surrendered Telangana's water rights to AP.

"Now, the Congress govt is trying to correct those mistakes. This meeting, though informal, has provided a constructive platform to move forward," he said.
When asked about the credibility of the proposed committee, Revanth said: "Even laws passed by Parliament are not implemented by PM Modi, including the Reorganisation Act. If we keep doubting everything, there will be no progress. Our aim is to resolve, not prolong, these issues.
We are accountable to the people of Telangana, not to political agendas."
The meeting was widely seen as a promising start in breaking the deadlock on critical water-sharing concerns with both sides committed to a structured dialogue, something that has eluded the two states for nearly a decade since bifurcation of combined AP in 2014. Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy is likely to meet union railways and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Thursday.
