Student in Perlis believed to have suffered seizure after vaping

Perlis education director Rose Aza Che Arifin said medical officers have not identified the type of vape used by the victim yet.
PETALING JAYA : A Form 3 student at a secondary school in Kangar, Perlis, was hospitalised today after suffering a seizure believed to have been caused by vaping.
Harian Metro reported that in the 9.35am incident, the student had skipped class with two other friends while an English exam was going on.
Perlis education director Rose Aza Che Arifin said the two friends later carried the victim into class, unconscious and foaming from the mouth.
She said the invigilator on duty immediately reported the matter to the school administrator before contacting an ambulance and the student's next of kin to bring him to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital.
'The victim is believed to have been vaping with his friends in the school toilet at around 9.30am.

Bus in Gerik crash clearly speeding, say police

Police said the road barrier penetrated the front left section of the bus, killing the students seated there. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The bus in the Gerik crash that killed 15 university students was clearly speeding based on dashcam footage from a car, say police. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said investigators have received the footage from the owner of the car, whose statement will be taken soon, Harian Metro reported. 'The recording clearly shows how the bus was speeding. What made matters worse was when a road barrier penetrated the front of the bus after it toppled over. 'That is why passengers seated on the left side of the bus were among those who lost their lives, because the barrier penetrated all the way to the passenger seats. 'We leave it to our investigating officers to go through the recording and take the owner's statement,' said Noor Hisam. He added that the statements of survivors would also be taken, after several of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students claimed the bus was speeding before the crash. He said the site of the crash was a downhill stretch of a hilly road and that the accident occurred around midnight after some rain. 'Based on my observation, there were no clear road markings and the area is very dark. We're still probing whether the cause of the crash was due to negligence or technical issues.' Noor Hisam also said most of the survivors were found in a drain next to the barrier, while the bodies of most of those killed were still in the bus after the crash. A total of 15 UPSI students died from the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. The bus was carrying 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant. A couple, along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were travelling in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with.

N. Ireland town hit by ‘racially motivated' riot

BALLYMENA: Northern Irish police said Tuesday that 15 officers were injured in clashes after 'racially motivated' attacks sparked by the arrest of two teenagers for attempted rape of a young girl. The disorder in the town of Ballymena, some 30 miles (48 kilometres) northwest of Belfast, broke out Monday night after a vigil in a neighbourhood where an alleged serious sexual assault happened on Saturday. 'This violence was clearly racially motivated and targeted at our minority ethnic community and police,' Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said. Two teenage boys, charged by police with the attempted rape of a teenage girl, had appeared in court earlier Monday, where they asked for a Romanian interpreter, local media reports said. The trouble began when masked people 'broke away from the vigil and began to build barricades, stockpiling missiles and attacking properties,' the police said. Houses and businesses were attacked and three people had to be evacuated, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said, adding it was investigating 'hate attacks'. Security forces also came under 'sustained attack', police said, with petrol bombs, fireworks and bricks thrown by masked rioters, injuring 15 officers including some who required hospital treatment. - Too scared to stay - Four houses were damaged by fire, and windows and doors of homes and businesses smashed. One 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of riotous and disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage and resisting police. Although police did not specify the exact reason for the unrest, the local MP had previously said tensions had been growing in the town over immigration. Footage on social media appeared to show protesters targeting houses by smashing windows and some masked individuals kicking in doors and windows and throwing items including cans of paint and glass bottles at police vehicles. A Romanian mother of three who lived in one of the targeted houses told the PA news agency she was scared to stay in the area. A spokesman for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said 'the disorder we saw in Ballymena is very concerning. 'Obviously, the reports of sexual assault in the area are extremely distressing, but there is no justification for attacks on police officers while they continue to protect local communities,' Downing Street added. 'We are actively working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,' said Assistant Chief Constable Henderson, adding a 'significant policing presence' would remain in place. Northern Ireland was hit by racism-fuelled disorder last August, sparked by anti-immigration riots in English towns and cities.

Gerik crash: Bus driver apologises, denies speeding after viral video claims, says brakes failed

TAIPING, June 10 — The driver of the ill-fated bus that crashed and killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students yesterday has apologised and denied claims he was speeding. Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle said the incident was caused by sudden brake failure while descending a hilly stretch on the East-West Highway, near the elephant crossing bridge in Gerik, Harian Metro reported today. 'I apologise to all the victims' families and the students involved in the accident yesterday morning. What happened was because the bus brakes suddenly failed,' he was quoted as saying from his hospital bed at Taiping Hospital, Perak. He said the bus – which departed from Terengganu for the main UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak – was functioning well, until the brakes failed without warning. 'At that moment, I tried everything I could, but since the bus had no air pressure left, nothing worked — not even the handbrake or the gear shift,' he was quoted as saying. Amirul claimed he did his best to avoid crashing into other vehicles as the bus sped downhill uncontrollably. 'What I did then was try to avoid hitting other vehicles. As far as I remember, I managed to avoid four vehicles, including a lorry, before the accident happened. 'The last vehicle I overtook was a car with a dashcam, and by then I was doing everything I could to prevent a worse situation.' A video clip of the bus overtaking vehicles on the highway has been circulating on the internet since yesterday, prompting questions about its speed. 'People saw me speeding and overtaking, but the truth is I was trying to avoid crashing into them. Unfortunately, it was a winding road and I couldn't do anything more,' Amirul was quoted as saying. The 39-year-old who has been driving buses since 2016 claimed he shouted to warn the students aboard the bus once the brakes failed. 'Those sitting at the front may have heard me, but most at the back were asleep and thought I was just yelling. 'I estimate the bus travelled for over a kilometre without brakes. I truly did my best as a driver to prevent the accident. 'I wasn't speeding as claimed. I know the Jeli-Gerik route well, and we were going downhill at the time,' he was quoted as saying. When the bus overturned, Amirul said he briefly lost consciousness. Upon waking up, he urged the UPSI students to crawl out through the broken windscreen. He related that he did the same and cried when he saw the students' condition. 'In all my years of driving, this is the first accident involving fatalities. As a bus driver, I feel deeply guilty. 'But there's no turning back time. All I can do is apologise, and I leave the investigation to the police,' the Besut native added. Amirul is currently awaiting surgery for a broken left arm. Yesterday, police said preliminary investigations found the bus had hit the rear of a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) before overturning. The MPV carried a family of four who survived the crash after veering into a ditch. The driver and his toddler son have since been discharged while his wife and six-year-old daughter remain warded for medical treatment at Baling Hospital in Kedah. Police have yet to formally question the bus driver and have indicated they will apply for a remand order after he is discharged.
