Rival to Amazon Fire Stick lets households stream 100s of TV shows and films in high quality

Daily Record27-06-2025
Shoppers will be able to use their favourite streaming services as well as watch live TV.
For those who can't afford to update their TV to a shiny new smart edition, which comes with all your must-have streaming and catch-up apps, streaming sticks have become a popular alternative. By simply sticking the device into your TV, users can watch all their favourite films, TV shows and live content at a fraction of the cost.
At the moment, the Amazon Fire TV Stick is arguably the most popular option on the market. However, for those who are wanting to invest in a streaming stick, there is an alternative that shoppers may want to consider.
Roku is currently one of Amazon 's top rivals for streaming devices as it offers many of your catch-up and streaming services, as well as Live TV. With a few variations of the Roku Streaming Stick on the market, shoppers should have a browse of each device to make sure they get one that best fits their needs.
For those wanting to easily upgrade their TV into HD 4K streaming, then shoppers may be enticed by the Roku Streaming Stick Plus which is selling on the Roku website. Priced at £39.99, this stick is currently Roku's ultimate device, reports the Mirror.
With access to over 200 TV channels which will all be delivered in 4K quality, shoppers will be able to enjoy live news, music, sports and more in vivid HDR colour. Priced the same as Amazon's latest basic device - Fire Stick HD - all shoppers need to do is plug the streaming stick into their TV and their viewing experience will be elevated.
Shoppers also won't need to spend ages trying to find something new to watch as the Roku Streaming Stick Plus comes with a simple home screen that features a handy 'what to watch' section that recommends new shows and films.
On top of this, shoppers can use the voice control remote to quickly find their latest binge watch or the selected film for the evening. However, it should be noted that this remote doesn't come with volume control buttons, so users will need to use their regular TV remote to adjust the audio.
For those looking for something slightly cheaper, Amazon is currently selling the Roku Streaming Stick for £29.99. While still equipped with all of the same apps and channels as the ultimate device, shoppers need to be aware that they will not get 4K quality if they purchase this lower level device.
Alternatively, shoppers can head to Argos and buy the Roku Express HD Streaming Device for £24.99. As the most basic device in the Roku range, this streaming gadget doesn't have access to as many channels as the sticks do. However, shoppers will still be able to access over 100 free, live and premium TV options in sharp HD quality.
In comparison to the streaming sticks, this device comes with a standard remote control and a HDMI cable to plug the gadget into the TV. However, the set up is as quick and easy as the sticks
For those who are more content buying Amazon's streaming stick, there are three notable versions on the market. The most basic stick is the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD which is priced at £39.99. This is followed by the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (RRP £59.99) and the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max priced at £69.99.
The most popular Amazon streaming stick is the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, which currently has over 19,200 ratings. With access to all your streaming services, live TV and catch-up channels, shoppers can watch all their content in vibrant 4K Ultra HD with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
Additionally, this is the only streaming media player that has access to the Xbox app.
Out of the Roku devices, the Express HD Streaming Device currently seems to be the most popular, with an overall 4.7 star rating from Argos shoppers.
One happy shopper said: "Really impressed with this purchase which has converted an old Sony Bravia TV into a full blown smart TV. Thoroughly enjoying watching Netflix and Prime on it, great product, thank you Roku."
Another customer added: "This is a fantastic piece of equipment. Works on an old HD TV and saves money considering the costs of Sky or Virgin TV packages which are not great. You can download the main channel apps and can watch live TV via your internet, as well as the Netflix app and Sky news etc."
However, one reviewer wasn't as impressed, as they wrote: "It's ok for a bedroom TV, but there are no volume control buttons and no power button on the remote. I probably would not have bought it if I knew."
Despite this, another five-star reviewer commented: "Why didn't I buy one before? Absolute game-changer. I had a TV I didn't want to part with because it had a built-in DVD player. This little thing turned it into a smart TV."

Ninja Crispi 'transformed my meals' and now the cheapest ever price - only with this code

Ninja Crispi 'transformed my meals' and now the cheapest ever price - only with this code The Ninja CRISPi 4-in-1 Portable Glass air aryer has a large 1.8L capacity, making it ideal for cooking multiple items at once Ninja has cut the price of all its products (Image: Amazon) They're the staple kitchen gadget, airfryers, plenty of households across the UK will rely on these simple worktop gadgets to cook their meals, all be it for a big family or diner for one. Popular for cutting time and money, one of Ninja's newest models is now the cheapest ever price. Worlds away from the brand's dual airfryer basket appliances, the Ninja Crispi is portable, compact, and everything is cooked in a glass container - which can then be used to store food in afterwards. Usually £179.99 there's now a much cheaper price being offered for shoppers. As part of Ninja's 20% off everything sale, the nifty air fryer has dropped to £149.99, one of the cheapest prices since it launched earlier this year. Only if shoppers use the code Ninja20 at the checkout. But is it worth buying? Writer Eve Rowlands has previously tried it out and says the appliance has left her 'enjoying cooking more'. Ditching her Philips Airfryer for the latest Ninja model, Eve swapped to the Crispi model which she says is more 'user-friendly and compact'. As she explains in her review below. Not only was it more powerful than my previous model, but it also looked sleeker. The Ninja CRISPi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer, launched earlier this year, and is incredibly user-friendly. Comprising CleanCrisp thermal-shock resistant glass containers (in which the food is cooked - there are two sizes) and a heating lid, it also includes Non-Stick Crisper Plates, 2 Storage Lids and a PowerPod Adaptor. But that's not all that's impressive about it. The Ninja CRISPi, as its full name suggests, has four different functions, all of which can be performed in the glass base: airfrying, roasting, recrisping and keeping food warm (once cooked). Naturally, the function I've used most is air frying. Ninja 20% off everything sale £179.99 £ 149.99 Ninja Kitchen UK Buy Here Product Description The Ninja CRISPi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer Cooking is significantly quicker than with my previous air fryer, which is a definite plus. Although I'm still experimenting with recipes, it has a larger capacity than our old model and has made cooking more enjoyable (mainly because it doesn't take forever). I can place vegetables at the bottom and fish on top (on the crisper tray), and they'll cook perfectly in about 15-20 minutes. This is ideal when you're short on time... or if, like me, you're not particularly fond of spending ages in the kitchen. As there are only two of us in my household, I haven't used it to cook for larger groups. However, the device claims to accommodate a 1.2KG chicken and vegetables for up to six people, which could come in handy. That said, some users have reported less success when trying to prepare full meals for 4-6 people using the gadget, so bear that in mind. One person commented: " The only thing that could have been better for us as a family of 4, is making the capacity slightly larger to cook a larger batch." The roasting mode is also incredibly useful, as it uses far less energy than turning on the oven. I've mainly used it to cook one of my favourite complex carbs, sweet potato fries, and am always amazed at how much quicker it is - around 20-25 minutes, depending on the quantity. Cleaning is also a breeze, which is a welcome change from my previous air fryer. The old model had the typical detachable sieve-like tray and base, both requiring cleaning, which was a time-consuming chore - especially as it wasn't dishwasher safe. The Ninja Crispi is sleek, elegant and perfectly compact for small kitchens (Image: Eve Rowlands) However, the Ninja CRISPi has a single glass base, reducing the cleaning task. Plus, it's dishwasher-friendly, which is a significant advantage. I do believe that this machine excels at preparing more substantial meals rather than quick snacks, such as omelettes - something I'd seen people making on social media. After trying it for lunch one day, while the top was wonderfully crispy and delicious, it took over 15 minutes to cook (compared to about seven with my frying pan) and was slightly soggy on the bottom. That's been the only downside of the machine in my opinion. Another potential drawback, according to some, is the price tag of £179.99, which they consider 'quite expensive'. The Ninja CRISPi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer is available in three different colours: blue, stone, and sage green. Article continues below Ninja Kitchen's air fryer appears to be the only fully glass air fryer available on the market, as far as I can tell. However, if you're not particularly keen on that aesthetic and would prefer something with an oven-door-style design, the Lakeland Slimline Air Fryer Black is currently priced at £89.99. It boasts seven pre-set cooking programmes and includes a clear-view cooking window for monitoring your food. Similarly, the Instant Vortex is available at Argos for £80.

'Sony headphones cuy by £80 are the best price and quality - I wear them every day'

My go-to pair of headphones from Sony have great sound quality but are a lot lighter on the bank balance As someone who loves to listen to music, a quality pair of headphones is essential for comfort and quality. When my Bose headphones started to tire after five years, I bought a cheaper Sony pair, and they are my best buy to date. Known for its quality, a flagship pair of Sony headphones can cost as much as £399 for the newest WH-1000XM6, a set best known for its noise-cancelling, but the price isn't for everyone. Which is where my favourite everyday pair come in, the Sony ULT Wear - and they're less than £100. Dropping in price at Amazon, the pair are now on sale for £99, that's £80 cheaper than its previous £179.99 price. Despite having fewer specs than their superior sibling, the WH-1000XM6 - the ULT Wear offers a lot for the price, and I wear them every day. Perimenopausal woman loses nearly 3 stone in 5 months even though she 'loves food' Top Tech: Sky vs Virgin Media as one sport plan cut to 66p a day and £260 TV for £0 A reliable pair of headphones with a portable - and importantly comfortable - design, and decent noice-cancelling features. I've previously raved about the headphones' foldable feature and accompanying travel case, as it makes them a go-to for travelling. The only thing to note is that they are bulky compared to my old Bose Quiet Comfort pair from 2017. The standout feature of the Sony ULT Wear, at least for me, is the superb bass. It really brings out the lower tones in the bass, making them louder and more pronounced. Of course, this depends on your musical tastes. Bass is perfect for hip hop and electronic music, and these Sony headphones will definitely crank it up a notch. Other brands which offer superb bass include Bose with its Quiet Comfort Ultra pair, now £299.95. They also have an adjustable EQ so wearers can change the volume of specific frequencies of the music or sound. Alternatively, Soundcore also off superb bass with its cheaper AnkerQ30 Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Headphones, now £79.99. You can toggle this feature on and off with a simple click of the clearly marked ULT button. There's also an Ambient Sound Mode, activated by pressing the smaller NC/AMB button on the left side. This lets in subtle sounds from your surroundings, which I find handy when I'm out and about and want to stay aware of traffic and people. If you're in a situation where you want pure, undisturbed sound (and just the music), you can press it again to shut out any distractions - a feature I often use on flights.

Amazon's 'impressive' tower fan shoppers love now reduced by a huge 80% in time for heatwave

Amazon's 'impressive' tower fan shoppers love now reduced by a huge 80% in time for heatwave No sweat if another heatwave is on its way, this 80% reduced in price tower fan can help (Image: Amazon / Pureborne) The summer of 2025 will surely be remembered as one with multiple mini heatwaves sweeping across the country and people feeling like they are over-heating and even having difficulty sleeping as the weather reaches higher temperatures. An efficient and effective fan that can be easily controlled, doesn't take up too much space, and can also be easily moved about the home, has been a product search online for many people desperate to cool down With another few days of heatwave on the way Amazon has a limited time deal on their number one best selling tower fan. The Pureborne 36" Smart Tower Fan with remote, app and touch control has been reduced by a huge 80% from £324.99 to £64.99. READ MORE: Garden sofa set price reduced by over 70% from unlikely retailer ideal for coming heatwave YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: Amazon's best selling hedge trimmer 'highly recommended' by buyers as 'easy to use' and 'ideal for the job' The fan has a base diameter of 32cm and a height of 91cm and four speed settings. (Image: Amazon / Pureborne) One buyer raves about the Pureborne 36" Smart Tower Fan, saying: "Impressed with this fan. It looks good and works very well. It has 4 speeds and multiple settings including a sleep setting. The fan is quiet and powerful and I am pleased with it! It is good value for money." According to Amazon the tower fan has been purchased over 900 times worldwide in the past month and offers a buyer a space saving solution with the base diameter of 32cm and a height of 91cm and four speed settings. Alternatives to the Pureborne 36" Smart Tower Fan are the Dimplex DXMBCF Black Tower Fan priced £85.00 from Argos and described as this retailer's best selling tower fan, and the DREO Pilot Max Smart Tower Fan in white available from Currys costing £150.00. A 90 degree oscillation range (Image: Amazon / Pureborne) Back on Amazon the happy customer reviews include one that says: "Extremely pleased with the fan, very quiet plus the bonus of having a sleep timer and an added remote so if used in the bedroom can be turned off without leaving the bed at night, ideal for what we want as it fits in the corner of the bedroom out of the way." The tower fan is smart too - it has normal, natural, sleep and auto modes. The manufacturer states that the natural wind mode ensures the tower fan's speed changes every five seconds to simulate natural, varying breezes. The sleep wind mode makes the fan oscillate and decreases speed every 30 minutes by up to two levels for undisturbed sleep. The display of the tower fan automatically turns off after 30 seconds in sleep mode and after 10 minutes in other modes. Four settings (Image: Amazon / Pureborne) In addition, the Pureborne 36" Smart Tower Fan is equipped with a one to 12 hour pre-set timer for automatic shut-off, saving energy and providing added safety. It can be controlled via remote, touch panel, app & voice control, and the settings can be adjusted from anywhere using the app on a mobile phone. When oscillating, the tower fan covers a 90 degree angle and covers an area of about 7.5 metres square. The fan also automatically changes speed with the room temperature - the cooler the room becomes, the slower the fan. Control via app is an option (Image: Amazon / Pureborne) These added 'smart features' have impressed some buyers, with one commenting: "I love this fan, assembly was quick and hassle free and connecting to the app and Alexa was a breeze! There are bar codes on the side of the fan, all you have to do is scan them with your phone and then take it from there, it is that easy." However, a few customers were less than impressed with the tower fan, with the difference of opinion with the majority of reviewers concerning the app control, the sound of the fan and one buyer maybe hasn't quite grasped the modes that decrease or shut the fan off. Article continues below One buyer says: "It's a good fan but it's very loud. Even on the lowest setting", while another comments: "Pretty loud, fairly weak and randomly stops blowing air as it turns." However another Amazon customer is clearly a fan of this fan, giving it a five-star review and saying: "The best fan I've ever owned. Fantastic cool breeze blowing, remote control, quiet, amazing value, I am well impressed."
