Chennai Grand Masters 2025 postponed by a day after fire at venue

The Hindu3 days ago
The Chennai Grand Masters 2025 chess tournament has been postponed by a day following a fire at the venue.
According to reports, the incident took place at the Hotel Hyatt Regency on Tuesday night. An electric fire made the entire hotel smoky, and everyone had to evacuate the hotel before it became difficult to breathe.
The players in both the Masters and Challengers categories were shifted to Hotel Pullman between 2 AM and 3 AM, Sportstar can confirm.
'It wasn't a major issue. Nothing alarming happened. The staff of the hotel put out the fire even before we reached,' said a fire service officer in Chennai.
The tournament, featuring 20 players from across the categories, was set to begin on Wednesday and run till August 15 in a single round-robin format.
The postponed Round 1 will be played on Thursday with the rest day on August 11 being scrapped.
Apart from a prize pool of Rs 1 crore, the tournament will also provide crucial FIDE Circuit points, which will be vital for securing a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

'KKR Should Be Desperate...': Big Verdict On Sanju Samson's IPL Future

Sanju Samson's long-standing association with the Rajasthan Royals could be nearing its end. After a mixed 2025 IPL season, reports have emerged that the Kerala batter has formally expressed his desire to leave the franchise, stirring up the transfer market ahead of the mega auction. According to reports, Samson has informed the Jaipur-based franchise about his decision to explore opportunities elsewhere, marking a possible end to a near-decade-long IPL journey. While speculation has linked Samson to a move to the Chennai Super Kings - particularly after his meeting with CSK head coach Stephen Fleming during the MLC season in the US - former India opener Aakash Chopra believes there's another team far more desperate to acquire Rajasthan skipper. 'The first name that comes to my mind is not CSK. KKR should be the most desperate team,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel. 'KKR don't have an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, and that just ties their hands behind their back. Secondly, what's wrong if you get a captain? I am not denying that Ajinkya Rahane has captained well and has scored runs as well.' Chopra pointed to Ajinkya Rahane's limitations as a batter and his age as key reasons for KKR to consider Samson seriously. Despite KKR's success in 2024 under Shreyas Iyer, the former cricketer believes the team lacks batting flexibility and depth in the wicketkeeper slot - an area Samson can immediately strengthen. 'Ajinkya Rahane as a batter -either he opens or else the batting order has been a bit of a problem,' Chopra added. 'They have a player they can release as well. If they wish, they can release Venkatesh Iyer, free up nearly Rs 24 crore, and then they can actually make a difference.' The 30-year-old Samson began his IPL journey with KKR in 2012 before rising to prominence with Rajasthan Royals, where he eventually became captain. But changes in RR's squad strategy ahead of the 2025 mega auction may have prompted the decision to move on. Notably, the team released England's Jos Buttler and opted for a stronger Indian core, promoting young domestic stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and breakout teenage talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Chopra suggested that this shift may have limited Samson's role and possibly influenced his decision. 'Why would Sanju Samson want to leave? It's interesting because when the last mega auction happened, they let Jos Buttler go, and I felt they let Jos Buttler go because Yashasvi had come and Sanju wanted to open, and Sanju and Rajasthan Royals were really, really thick,' Chopra noted. 'I felt there would have been a massive input from Sanju in the players they retained or released. However, now it seems it might not have been there. Vaibhav Suryavanshi has come, so two openers are already ready, and you also want to bat Dhruv Jurel up the order. So Sanju wishes to leave. If he is thinking like that, it's possible. These are conjectures. I don't know what's in his and Rajasthan's minds.'

Sanju Samson Can't Stop Laughing As R Ashwin Teases Him About Trade Rumors, Video Viral

Last Updated: Ashwin released a viral video with Sanju Samson hinting at potential moves from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Ravichandran Ashwin is becoming as good a content creator as he is a cricketer. On Friday (August 8), just when the rumors about his move away from Chennai Super Kings and Sanju Samson's likely impending departure from Rajasthan Royals were gathering steam, he released the trailer of their meet-up and interview. In it, Ashwin gives hints about the deal, and the video has swiftly gone viral. Ashwin also offered to trade himself if Samson could 'travel back to Chennai'. Although it was unclear what exactly the duo was talking about, Samson just couldn't stop laughing at the tease without uttering a word. 'I have a lot of questions to ask," Ashwin said in the video. 'But before that, I thought I'll come directly and trade myself. I am happy to stay back in Kerala. There are a lot of rumours going on. Neither do I know of anything. So, I thought I'll reach out to you and ask you. If I can stay back in Kerala and you can travel back to Chennai," he added. Sanju on #KuttiStoriesWithAsh, powered by @PeterEngland_. Drops tomorrow afternoon. — Kutti Stories with Ash (@crikipidea) August 8, 2025 Reports first emerged about Samson and RR a couple of days ago. It was said that he has conveyed it to RR that he wants to leave the team due to some differences. CSK were said to be the front-runners courting him, though it was said that RR would demand a couple of players in exchange for letting Samson go directly to them. The other option would be Samson being released and going into the auction, which will mean it'll be out of CSK's hands to sign him. On Friday, reports came out saying that Ashwin wanted to leave CSK, too. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the legendary face of the franchise, MS Dhoni, are in Chennai discussing about the team's plans, and there's a good chance that the Rs 9.75 crore-signed Ashwin is released this year. It would be interesting to see if Ashwin, who has played for RR previously, could be a part of the deal. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
