‘Sanju Samson right replacement for MS Dhoni in CSK, he's quite popular in Chennai', says Kris Srikkanth

The Sanju Samson IPL trade/transfer talks have gained a lot of chatter in the IPL circles since the end of a tepid 2025 season for the Rajasthan Royals where the skipper had a nominal role to play due to a couple of injury lay-offs. In Samson's absence, the Royals seemed to have found an explosive left-handed pairing in young Yashasvi Jaiswal and the prodigious Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Reacting to the rumours doing the rounds that have tied Samson and the Chennai Super Kings, former India batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth referred to the potential union as the perfect way to replace their talismanic leader, MS Dhoni. Srikkanth, however, ceded that the Rajasthan Royals must find a way to retain Samson after having started a fresh Mega Auction cycle earlier this year with the team built around the Kerala star. Samson and Jaiswal were Rajasthan's top retentions ahead of the auctions held in 2024, at Rs 18 crore. 'Going by the reports, there seems to be a rift between him and Rahul Dravid, but I am not fully aware,' Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. 'Look at it from a franchise point of view. They have paid him a certain amount and retained him. They have formed the team around him. All of a sudden, if you release him, what happens to the team balance? They haven't won the IPL since 2008. 'They have reached the final after that (in 2022). I don't think I would let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He's been paid INR 18 crore,' Srikkanth added. Srikkanth referred to Samson's huge popularity in Chennai and his speciality as a keeper-batter-cum leader that makes him an able fit for the 44-year-old Dhoni who is in the final laps of his IPL playing career. 'To tell you the truth, Sanju is a brilliant player and he's very popular in Chennai. He's got a good brand image in Chennai. As I said, I'll be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side,' said Srikkanth. 'He's the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with,' he added.

‘Perfect Dhoni successor' named by Kris Srikkanth — and it's not Ruturaj Gaikwad

Synopsis Kris Srikkanth has ignited IPL speculation by suggesting Sanju Samson as the ideal successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, citing Samson's exceptional talent and popularity in Tamil Nadu. While acknowledging Ruturaj Gaikwad as another captaincy option, Srikkanth believes Samson's strong brand presence makes him a valuable asset for CSK. Agencies MS Dhoni (left) and Sanju Samson Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has fuelled the IPL rumour mill by naming Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson as the perfect successor to MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings — and he has a clear reason on his YouTube channel on Saturday, Srikkanth said Samson's 'brilliant' skills and strong brand presence in Tamil Nadu made him an obvious choice should he leave Rajasthan.'Sanju is a brilliant player and he is very popular in Chennai. He has got a good brand image in Chennai. I will be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side,' Srikkanth remarked, responding to media reports linking Samson with a possible move. The 64-year-old, however, acknowledged that CSK already have a captaincy option in Ruturaj Gaikwad, who briefly led the team last season before Dhoni returned due to Gaikwad's injury. 'He is the right replacement for MS Dhoni. Dhoni can maximum play this season, maybe not the year after and then you can have a smooth transition. But I feel if Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given the captaincy, he should be continued with,' Srikkanth said. Dhoni, 44, is widely expected to be nearing the end of his IPL career. Last season, CSK endured a tough campaign, finishing bottom of the table with just four wins. Used mainly as a finisher, Dhoni scored 196 runs at a strike rate above reports of a possible rift between Samson and Royals' head coach Rahul Dravid, Srikkanth said the franchise had built their side around the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter.'I would not let go of Sanju Samson. If they want to promote Riyan Parag as captain, that is their choice. I would still play Samson as a batter. He has been paid Rs 18 crore,' he who joined RR in 2013, has scored 4,027 IPL runs, including two centuries. Despite injuries last season, he averaged 35.63 in nine matches. (With inputs from ToI)

Poll What do you think about Sanju Samson's potential transfer from Rajasthan Royals? It's a great move for his career He should stay with Rajasthan Royals I don't have a strong opinion It depends on the new team dynamics Speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, Samson's tone was one of deep gratitude for the Royals, who signed him in 2013 when he was still a teenager. "RR has meant the world to me. A small child coming from a village in Kerala, wanting to show his talent. And then Rahul (Dravid) sir and Manoj Badale sir gave me a stage to get up and show the world what I am made of," Samson recalled. He credited the Royals for backing him at a formative stage in his career. "That time, they trusted me throughout. The journey with RR has been really great, and I'm very grateful to have been in a franchise like that. It really means a lot to me." Under his leadership, RR reached the 2022 final before losing to Gujarat Titans. However, IPL 2025 proved challenging — Samson missed five matches due to a side strain, with Riyan Parag stepping in as stand-in skipper. The team finished ninth with just four wins. Samson was retained for Rs 18 crore ahead of the last mega auction alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Sandeep Sharma, and Shimron Hetmyer.
