NHAI to build bypass around Brihadeeswara Temple at Gangaikondacholapuram in Ariyalur district
The move comes in the wake of concerns raised by heritage enthusiasts and conservationists over possible damage to the ancient structure caused by due to the vibrations caused by the movement of heavy vehicles on the highway.
The NHAI recently floated a tender for building the bypass at an estimate of about ₹103.62 crore. Sources in the NHAI said the greenfield 7.2-km-long bypass will run from Gangaikondacholapuram to Meensuritti on the highway and would entail land acquisition. The work is expected to commence once the land is available. As per the tender document, the work is to be completed in 18 months and the contractor would be obligated to maintain it for five years.
The 134-km-long Tiruchi-Chidambaram National Highway (NH 81) was strengthened and developed in recent years in three packages covering Tiruchi-Kallagam, Kallagam-Meensuritti, and Meensuritti-Chidambaram stretches. As the highway runs close to the Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple, the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust (GKC Trust), led by its chairman R. Komagan, had called for building a bypass to protect the monument from possible damage due to vehicular traffic on the highway.
Based on his representation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in 2023 had taken up the matter with her Cabinet colleague and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari requesting him to consider the plea. Following this, the NHAI had conducted a feasibility study and decided to build the bypass.
Gangaikondachalpuram and the temple were built by King Rajendra Chola I (1012-1044 CE) after his victorious expedition up to the Gangetic plains. The Brihadeeswarar Temple, listed as one of the three Great Living Chola Temples by UNESCO, is under the maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India.
'The highway development was endangering the structural stability of the temple and its sub shrines due to the movement of heavy vehicles close by. Besides, rare inscriptions in the temple complex will be prone to be damaged due to emissions from the vehicles,' Mr. Komagan had contended then.
Welcoming the decision to build the bypass, Mr. Komagan, however, urged the NHAI to build the road expeditiously.

FASTag annual pass fails to impress many, users report failed recharges to wrong deductions
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ) have launched a FASTag Annual Pass for private vehicle owners. The new prepaid plan is aimed at simplifying toll payments and reducing congestion on highways. The scheme, operating under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) framework, is available for non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. For a one-time payment of ₹3,000, vehicle owners get up to 200 toll plaza crossings or one year of validity, whichever comes first. Key Features of the FASTag Annual Pass: Valid for one year from activation or up to 200 only for non-commercial vehicles with an active to a single vehicle and at NHAI and MoRTH-managed toll plazas across major highways such as the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Mumbai–Nashik Highway, and Mumbai–Surat Highway. Users Report Glitches Soon after the rollout, several users took to social media (X) reporting technical issues while recharging or using the pass. 'After purchasing the FASTag annual pass for my vehicle, the payment shows complete but the pass doesn't appear in order history,' one user wrote. Another complained, 'Even though I bought the annual pass, FASTag balance still got deducted at eligible toll plazas. Please refund the amount. Even the 1033 helpline isn't working.' A third noted that the pass is 'not applicable on the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway.' Some also reported errors such as: 'The requested vehicle is not available in VAHAN.' Despite these concerns, officials say the pass could be highly beneficial for frequent travellers once the teething issues are resolved. ‘Gift of Vikramaditya': Eighth copper plates set deciphered
HYDERABAD: The eighth set in a series of nine recently discovered copper plate inscriptions in Kodad village of Suryapet district was examined. The 10-century copper plate, which was issued by Vengi Chalukya king Vikramaditya II, is now preserved at the Heritage department. The inscription, written in Sanskrit using Telugu script, is dated to Saka 848 (corresponding to February 24, 927 CE, a Saturday), according to Archaeological Survey of India Director (Epigraphy) K Muniratnam Reddy. It was issued by King Vikramaditya II, son of Chalukya Bhima I and Vijayamahadevi. The royal seal features a boar (Varaha) emblem with the legend 'Sri Tribhuvanamkusa.' The inscription outlines the Chalukya dynasty's genealogy from Kubja Vishnuvardhana to Vikramaditya II. It notes that the king granted the village of Annasiri in Kondapalli-vishaya as devabhoga, for temple worship, food offerings, and the upkeep of a choultry, in the temple of Bijjeshvara. It also credits Lokamavva, wife of Gundayya and daughter of Bekana (administrator of Pennatavadi), with constructing the Bijjeshvara temple, where the image was installed by Gunabhushana. The inscription was engraved by Vinayaditya, son of Birogajjala, and concludes with the words 'Vikramaditya dattah,' meaning 'Gift of Vikramaditya.' Muniratnam says the discovery adds significant insight into the political and religious history of the Vengi Chalukyas in present-day Telangana.
