NHAI to build bypass around Brihadeeswara Temple at Gangaikondacholapuram in Ariyalur district
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to build a bypass around Gangaikondacholapuram on the Tiruchi-Chidambaram National Highway (NH 81) to divert traffic away from the Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple, a world heritage monument situated in Ariyalur district.
The move comes in the wake of concerns raised by heritage enthusiasts and conservationists over possible damage to the ancient structure caused by due to the vibrations caused by the movement of heavy vehicles on the highway.
The NHAI recently floated a tender for building the bypass at an estimate of about ₹103.62 crore. Sources in the NHAI said the greenfield 7.2-km-long bypass will run from Gangaikondacholapuram to Meensuritti on the highway and would entail land acquisition. The work is expected to commence once the land is available. As per the tender document, the work is to be completed in 18 months and the contractor would be obligated to maintain it for five years.
The 134-km-long Tiruchi-Chidambaram National Highway (NH 81) was strengthened and developed in recent years in three packages covering Tiruchi-Kallagam, Kallagam-Meensuritti, and Meensuritti-Chidambaram stretches. As the highway runs close to the Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple, the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust (GKC Trust), led by its chairman R. Komagan, had called for building a bypass to protect the monument from possible damage due to vehicular traffic on the highway.
Based on his representation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in 2023 had taken up the matter with her Cabinet colleague and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari requesting him to consider the plea. Following this, the NHAI had conducted a feasibility study and decided to build the bypass.
Gangaikondachalpuram and the temple were built by King Rajendra Chola I (1012-1044 CE) after his victorious expedition up to the Gangetic plains. The Brihadeeswarar Temple, listed as one of the three Great Living Chola Temples by UNESCO, is under the maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India.
'The highway development was endangering the structural stability of the temple and its sub shrines due to the movement of heavy vehicles close by. Besides, rare inscriptions in the temple complex will be prone to be damaged due to emissions from the vehicles,' Mr. Komagan had contended then.
Welcoming the decision to build the bypass, Mr. Komagan, however, urged the NHAI to build the road expeditiously.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said that major projects worth Rs 35,000 crore under NHAI are currently being built in the national capital, while earlier projects worth Rs 64,000 crore have been completed. More projects worth Rs 24,000 crore are also set to begin soon. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Delhi. Gupta thanked the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving and completing several major road and infrastructure projects in the city. During the press conference, Rekha Gupta said, "I want to thank the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for the massive support given to Delhi through several important road and infrastructure projects. Right now, a major project worth Rs 35,000 crore is being built in Delhi under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Earlier, projects worth Rs 64,000 crore were successfully completed. In the near future, projects worth another Rs 24,000 crore, whose detailed project reports (DPRs) are ready, will also begin." Gupta said that several major road projects are being planned to reduce traffic jams and pollution in the city. She announced that a 7-kilometre tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, new highways linking Delhi to Katra, Amritsar and Dehradun, and an elevated road from INA to the airport are part of the plan. Roads like Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, and Badarpur will also be made signal-free soon. "All these efforts aim to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in Delhi. To improve traffic flow, a 7-kilometre underground tunnel will be constructed from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. There will also be an elevated road connecting INA to the airport, which will later extend to Faridabad and Gurgaon. A new highway from Delhi to Katra and Amritsar will be developed and linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER 2). Another major highway will run from Alipur to Tronica City and will connect Delhi to Dehradun. This means people travelling from Haryana to Dehradun or from Dehradun to Noida won't need to enter Delhi, easing traffic inside the city. A tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to Indira Gandhi Airport is also being considered. Several other roads in Delhi, including Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, Badarpur, and MJ Road, have been taken over by NHAI and will be made signal-free. Their work will start soon," Gupta said. "NHAI will look into the drainage system, and from that drainage systems will also be improved along these roads, solving long-standing issues of waterlogging caused by multiple agencies. PWD will also look into it. Additionally, Rs 150 crore has been approved for Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs)," Gupta said. She said that ongoing and upcoming projects worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore will help reduce traffic jams, lower pollution, and improve travel in and around Delhi. "Overall, I thank the Central Government for the projects worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore that are helping transform Delhi into a modern, clean, and green city. With continued support, Delhi will become a world-class capital," Gupta said. In the meeting, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena were also present in the meeting.

Rs 6,700 crore boost for road development in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union government has approved road development projects worth Rs 6,700 crore submitted by Kerala, following a meeting between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Wednesday. The clearance covers 14 projects proposed by the state. Gadkari also assured that the 380-m-long stretch in the Malappuram-Kooriyad section that got damaged during NH 66 construction will be rebuilt as a viaduct at the contractor's expense. Public Works Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, who was part of the CM-led delegation, said the independent engineer, contractor and design consultant involved with the project have been removed and the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) project director suspended. The meeting also reviewed the progress of NH works under way in Kerala. 'Recognising minor delays in some stretches, the Union minister suggested corrective steps. All highway construction will be completed by December 2025,' Riyas said. He also confirmed that the state will receive `151 crore under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme this week. Riyas said the Centre would give final approval for the Thiruvananthapuram Outer Ring Road and the Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway, likely by the end of July. Several projects that were pending for over eight years have now received clearance. The Ernakulam Bypass project has received in-principle approval, and the remaining formalities are expected to be completed within five months. Of the seven NHs currently under development through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways fund, five have received approval, while nod for the other two is expected within two months.
