AMMA election: Raveendran withdraws nomination to president's post, Jagadeesh may follow suit
Actor Jagadeesh is likely to withdraw his nomination to the post of president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA). Jagadeesh said that he would withdraw the nomination with the concurrence of actors, including Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi, whom he had consulted before filing the nomination. The actor's move to withdraw the nomination emerged amidst speculations that a woman candidate may be considered for the post. Actor Swetha Menon is among the six who had filed nominations to the post of the president. Besides Jagadeesh and Swetha Menon, the others who had filed nominations to the post are Raveendran, Devan, Anoop Chandran, and Jayan Cherthala. Raveendran withdrew his nomination on Tuesday while stating that he would contest for the post of general secretary. Mr. Raveendran welcomed the reports that a woman could be considered as the president of the actors' body. Polls on August 15 The last date for withdrawal of nominations is July 31 and the election is scheduled on August 15. The association continued to remain a divided house on whether the members accused of misconduct in the K. Hema Committee report (on the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry) or cases registered in its wake should contest the election. The issue came to the fore after Baburaj, who had faced allegations of sexual assault, filed his nomination to the post of the general secretary. While actors such as Sarayu and Ansiba had stated that there was nothing wrong in the accused members contesting, others, including Mallika Sukumaran, Maala Parvathi, Anoop Chandran have opposed it, stating that it may set a wrong precedent as actors had stayed away on earlier occasions after facing such allegations.

From cultural adaptations to direct dubs: How Tamil cinema's remake culture has evolved across generations
Now, South Indian films are being released simultaneously in Tamil and other South Indian languages. In the past, it was common for people to buy the remake rights of a film released in one language and then film it in other languages. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But now, every multilingual film is being released in Tamil simultaneously. As a result, the remake culture is clearly declining. When remakes had soul The directors and actors of the previous generation adapted the story in the remake films to suit their culture and presented the screenplay according to the taste of the Tamil fans. For example, the Malayalam film 'Manichitrathazhu' was transformed into 'Chandramukhi' in Tamil. Although the story angle remained the same, the subtle changes in the format impressed the audience. Similarly, many hit Hindi and Telugu films have been successful in Tamil. The main quality of the previous generation was their ability to retell the story from their own perspective. The audience had the feeling that the same story is being changed for them to suit them. Those remakes were well-ingrained in the minds and culture of Tamil audiences. But today, that research, that attention to detail has waned. The style of approaching the remakes only from a commercial perspective is not conducive to positive audience acceptance. Why is Tamil cinema losing the art of cultural storytelling? Producers and directors from today's generation often take the film to Tamil audiences through simultaneous translation or dubbing. This trend has given fans the opportunity to experience films more quickly and has reduced the demand for remakes. But here, there is also a new challenge: not all cultural differences in translated films are understandable to Tamils. One drawback of today's remakes is that most films only do so at the translation level. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The underlying sentiments of the story, the feelings of that community, all of that don't get enough dimension in Tamil. They don't change the story from their perspective like directors did in the past. This also affects the audience's experience. 'I don't understand why we compare a remake to the original. Comparisons limit our enjoyment—in effect, they kill entertainment' said director R Kannan, who made several Tamil remakes, during his speech at 'The Great Indian Kitchen' promotions. 'I was offered to remake 3 Idiots in Tamil—but I refused. Recreating a role exactly? It's impossible for me. Comparison ruins the magic of the first experience,' said R Madhavan on clarifying '3 Idiots' Tamil remake 'Nanban' at 'Laal Singh Chaddha' pre-release event. "A remake is like an adopted child, success lies in making it believe you're its true parent, even if the world never stops reminding you that you're not," said in his exclusive chat with Etimes. Then vs now Overall, the remake culture is experiencing a shift. The older generation carried it with uniqueness, but today's generation does it faster, in less time. While the digital age has allowed stories to spread quickly around the world, the ability to tell a story from a new perspective with inherent impact is lacking in today's remake culture.

Prithviraj Sukumaran's Wife Supriya Menon Names Online Harasser After Years Of Abuse
1/6 For seven years, Supriya Menon, journalist-turned-film producer and wife of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, chose silence over confrontation. But that ended this week, when she publicly named a woman who she says has stalked and abused her online since 2018. Supriya took to Instagram to reveal that the woman behind the years-long harassment is a Malayali nurse named Christina Eldo, also known as Christina Babu Kurien, reportedly based in Chattanooga, USA. According to Supriya, the woman has been creating fake social media accounts and consistently harassing her with personal and abusive comments. The harassment, she said, escalated over time, even targeting her late father. (News18 Malayalam) "I found out who she is years ago," Supriya wrote on her Instagram story, but sge let it go because the accused had a small child. Her decision to go public now, she explained, was prompted by the continued abuse and the attacker's refusal to back off, despite being blocked repeatedly. "Even that filter she has on is not enough to hide the ugliness she holds inside", Supriya added, sharing a filtered photo of the woman. A TOI report quoted a promotion consultant with ETimes who confirmed that the woman Supriya identified is a nurse currently residing in the United States. (News18 Malayalam) Supriya Menon, who came from a middle-class background, rose to prominence first as a journalist with a major media house in Mumbai. It was during that time she met Prithviraj Sukumaran. After their marriage, Supriya stepped into the world of cinema, not just as the actor's wife, but as the head of Prithviraj Productions. She went on to carve her own identity in the Malayalam film industry, taking up the producer's role in multiple successful projects. Despite these achievements, Supriya has often spoken about how her identity is still frequently defined by her husband's fame. In interviews, she has openly expressed her wish to be acknowledged as a woman who achieved success on her own terms. "Many people invite me as Prithviraj's wife," she once said, "but I want to be seen as someone who has built something of her own." (News18 Malayalam) Supriya described the harassment as a part of her daily life. Each time she blocked one account, another would appear. Initially, she tried to ignore it, hoping that disengagement would end the cycle. But when the attacks extended to her deceased father, it became a line she could no longer tolerate. In a post from 2023, Supriya had hinted that she might take action after offensive comments appeared about her father. This week's revelation appears to be a follow-up to that threat - except now, she's named the alleged harasser. (News18 Malayalam) The Instagram story, posted to her profile with over 10 lakh followers, also included a scathing caption. Supriya added that the woman's primary activity seemed to be posting abusive comments under every account that posts something about her. It remains unclear why Christina targeted Supriya in the first place. Supriya herself has expressed confusion over the woman's motives or whether there's any real-world connection between them. (News18 Malayalam) What is clear is that the abuse wasn't a one-off. It lasted for years, spanned dozens of fake accounts, and became a regular feature of Supriya's online experience. Supriya has not yet indicated whether she plans to pursue legal action. But by naming the woman publicly, she's made it clear that the silent tolerance of harassment is over. (News18 Malayalam)
