Central Bank of Egypt Eases Rules on Credit Card Use Abroad

Taarek Refaat The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has officially relaxed a key restriction on the use of credit cards abroad, signaling a shift in the country's foreign exchange management policies following recent economic reforms. In a decision announced this week, the CBE canceled a clause from a previous directive issued in October 2023. The now-removed clause had required banks to track the international use of credit cards by verifying exit and entry stamps on customers' passports within 90 days of activating their cards for international use. Under the previous rule, customers had to submit travel documentation to confirm they were physically abroad when using their cards, as a measure to control foreign currency outflows. Failure to do so could result in card restrictions or penalties. With the new directive in place, customers are no longer obligated to provide banks with such documentation. Egyptian banks will continue to allow credit card usage abroad, applying foreign exchange fees as usual, but without demanding proof of travel. Policy Shift Reflects Improved Currency Conditions This regulatory easing follows the unification of Egypt's exchange rate in March 2025, a move that aligned the official and parallel market rates and helped stabilize the country's foreign currency environment. As a result, the stringent controls previously considered necessary to prevent misuse of foreign exchange channels have become less relevant. Economic analysts view the move as part of a broader strategy to normalize banking operations and restore confidence in the financial sector, especially after years of tight currency controls and capital management regulations. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

Egypt's 9th Think Commercial real estate roundtable set for Sept. 8

The ninth edition of the Think Commercial real estate roundtable will be held on Sept. 8 to discuss the latest developments in the Egyptian property market, its organisers said. The event, organised by conference company Media Avenue, will take place at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Cairo under the theme 'The Real Estate Industry Leads Investment and Export.' Discussions will focus on opportunities for real estate expansion in regional and global markets, modern real estate investment tools such as property funds and participatory financing, and the utilisation of old government headquarters and the development of the downtown Cairo area. The roundtable will also address advanced financing mechanisms as a key element for overcoming economic challenges, including government facilities, lower interest rates, and the activation of tools like real estate financing and institutional investment. The event will feature two sessions: the first will discuss opportunities for real-estate expansion, while the second will review modern real estate investment tools. Participants will include government officials from the Ministry of Housing and the Financial Regulatory Authority, members of parliament, and representatives from business organisations. Leaders from major real estate development and finance companies, as well as firms specialising in participatory financing, asset management, and the establishment of real estate funds, are also expected to attend.

Egypt's FM discusses Gaza, bilateral ties in calls with Saudi, South African counterparts

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed the war in Gaza and bilateral relations in separate phone calls with his Saudi and South African counterparts this week, his ministry said. In a call on Wednesday with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, Abdelatty discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in light of South Africa's presidency of the G20, the ministry said in a statement. Abdelatty conveyed greetings from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, and expressed Egypt's pride in its historical ties with the country. He noted Egypt's readiness to cooperate with South Africa on development projects, given the extensive experience of Egyptian companies. On water security, Abdelatty stressed the need to adhere to international law regarding shared water resources and rejected 'unilateral actions' in the eastern Nile Basin. The two ministers also discussed regional and international political and security developments, including the situation in Gaza and efforts to reach a ceasefire, as well as developments in Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and the Horn of Africa. In a separate call on Tuesday evening, Abdelatty and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farah discussed the 'catastrophic' situation in the Gaza Strip. The two ministers affirmed their 'joint and categorical rejection' of the Israeli cabinet's decision to develop a plan to occupy the Gaza Strip and expand its aggression, the Egyptian statement said. They described the plan as an attempt to 'entrench the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, continue the war of extermination against the unarmed Palestinian people, and undermine their right to self-determination.' Abdelatty briefed his Saudi counterpart on Egypt's ongoing efforts with Qatar and the United States to reach a deal that would secure the release of hostages and a number of Palestinian prisoners, and ensure the full and unconditional delivery of aid. The two ministers agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian and medical aid, and an immediate end to the 'policy of starvation and systematic killing.' They also stressed the need to protect civilians and enable the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The call also covered the overall regional situation, with the two ministers exchanging views on how to deal with the current challenges and crises in Sudan, Syria, and Lebanon.
