However, after revealing how the cast were all still chatting to each other on a special Whatsapp group which they had set up, he became emotional.
And then he told fans at his 'In Conversation With...' show in Taunton, Somerset, how 'a lovely guy' who worked on the sitcom with them had suddenly died.
Mat said: 'Sorry. I got distracted. Earlier on... we had a driver on the finale called Rob and he was in his early 40s... and I found out via the Whatsapp group earlier that he has passed away and I got slightly distracted there.
'It's really really sad. I got distracted by losing Rob.

"He was a really lovely guy and he's left a four year old behind and that is really really really sad.'
Mat told the audience how all the cast and crew had become ''like a family'' working together on the show over 17 years and how his TV mum Alison Steadman who plays Pamela had become 'a surrogate mum'.
He added: "In 2019 before the Christmas special - part one of the finale if you like - aired, I lost my mother and Alison really stepped up and she became my surrogate mother off screen as well.
"Whenever she texts me even now she signs it 'Mum'. And that is cool. That is so beautiful. And she says 'How are you, my little
prince
?' It means the world to me."

The final episode of the long-running series aired on Christmas Day last year, with 19.1 million viewers tuning in for the last instalment.
The tear-jerker of a special ended with Smithy and Nessa finally tying the knot - after a five-year cliffhanger following Nessa's shock proposal at the end of the last Christmas special.
Gavin and Stacey Reunion: James Corden and Mathew Horne Reunite for Final Episode
The happy ending looked unlikely as the feature-length episode kicked off, with viewers quickly learning Smithy had said no in favour of sticking with his stuffy girlfriend Sonia.
But fans got what they craved when Smithy, aided by Gavin and Stacey's nearest and dearest, fled his and fiancée Sonia's wedding to drive to Southampton Port to intercept Nessa before she took to the seas having turned her back on Barry Island.

Driven by former love rival Dave Coaches, the group made it just in time for Smithy to pour his heart out to Nessa on the deck of a boat.
At first she told him plainly that she wouldn't ask him to marry her again, forcing him to swallow his
pride
and propose.
Gavin and Stacey's Best Moments
With the news that the show is set to make an exciting return to screens, let's take a look at some of the comedy programme's biggest and best moments...
Smithy and Rudi's American Boy rap
- No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith rapped perfectly word for word the Kanye West and Estelle hit American Boy as they walked across the car park on the phone to Gavin.
Pam's Vegetarian faux pas
- Despite loving a cheesburger, Pam found herself caught up in a web of unexpected lies when she claimed to be Vegetarian. She is forced to keep up the secret throughout the entire show and uses hubby Mick to help her scoff meat. She is later rumbled when Stacey catches her in the act as she scoffs ham in the kitchen. Stacey says to her: 'Is that ham, Pam!?… 'I've seen you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, putting those regular sausages into the Linda McCartney box'.
THAT fishing trip
- It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history as to just exactly what did happen on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn appears to be hiding a secret as to an occurance between him and his nephew Jason which has left relations fractures. Ness' on-off boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person to know the whole truth. Bryn did appear to allude to him and Jason lying together naked to keep warm as he said to Dave: 'We're going to have this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened, David, but you don't know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you are that cold…'
Islands in the Stream
- No one can ever forget the classic Karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the track in front of all their nearest and dearest. It saw the whole pub burst into some line-dancing as they enjoyed a boozy night out.
The Xmas special proposal
- In 2019, fans were left overjoyed when the show made a comeback but it ended on the ultimate cliffhanger. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him as she finally laid bare her feelings for him. Fans were gutted as the show then cut straight to the credits as they never found out just how Smithy answered. Will all be revealed in the brand new episode?
Nessa eventually accepted, paving the way for a registry office wedding in front of the show's most popular faces.
The sitcom was created by James Corden and

Gregg Wallace gushes over ‘beautiful' wife on romantic anniversary picnic as MasterChef makes controversial return

GREGG Wallace called himself a "very lucky man" as he celebrated his ninth wedding anniversary today with "beautiful" wife Anna. The axed MasterChef star, 60, returned to Hever Castle, Kent, with Anne-Marie, 38, for a romantic picnic on the same day the latest series of the BBC cooking show controversially returned to screens featuring both of its fired hosts. 4 Gregg Wallace celebrated his wedding anniversary today with wife Anne-Marie Credit: Instagram 4 They enjoyed a picnic at Hever Castle Credit: Instagram Series 21 was filmed before a report into Wallace's behaviour upheld 45 historical allegations of misconduct over a 17 year period. As part of the investigation Wallace's co-star John Torode was alleged to have used a racist term, though he maintains he did not. Today, Wallace, who is now marketing himself as a personal trainer, was all smiles as he filmed himself and Anna by the side of a lake. He said: "Hello, it's our wedding anniversary. How many years, Anna?" She replied: "Nine." The couple then giggled as they struggled to recall if they'd been together for 12 or 13 years. Wallace continued: "The theme is willow, so we've got a picnic basket and we're at Hever Castle because it's here we got married. "Look at this scene for a picnic. Beautiful setting, beautiful wife. I'm a very lucky man." One follower commented: "Happy faces for a happy anniversary - I bet it was a lovely picnic too." Another said: "Lovely location for a wedding anniversary picnic." Shamed Gregg Wallace says 'I'm no groper, sex pest or flasher,' as tearful star refuses to accept blame for BBC sacking A third posted: "Lovely location for a wedding anniversary picnic." Those who tuned into MasterChef today on BBC iPlayer noticed the show had been edited to minimise the amount of banter between hosts Torode and Wallace. As the six amateur cooks made their first dishes for the pair, viewers noted how their usual breezy interactions were virtually non-existent. Prior to the show airing, contestant Sarah Shafi, from Leeds, revealed how she was allegedly offered the opportunity to be edited out of the series after claiming it shouldn't be broadcast. Ms Shafi, 57, told the Guardian: 'I didn't say edit me out. 'I said: 'Axe the show, don't air the show. I'm asking you not to air the show.' Prominent figures have been abusing their power. "What message does that send out to women?" MasterChef facts MASTERCHEF has been a staple BBC series for years - but what are the key details? MasterChef launched on BBC One back in 1990 It ran until 2001, then was revived in 2005 as MasterChef Goes Large John Torode joined the revamped series in 2005, where he teamed up with Gregg Wallace as hosts Controversial moments? In March 2018, Gregg refused to judge Zaleha Kadir Olpin's stewed chicken rendang dish as he claimed it was 'not crispy enough and could not be eaten.' Ms Sharif alleged there was an "enabling environment" and a pattern of "institutions not being accountable". She also claimed there was a "heated conversation" when she tried to voice her opinions with a producer. Once the corporation confirmed the season was going ahead, Ms Sharif agreed to be edited out. The Sun contacted a representative for MasterChef for comment. 4 MasterChef returned today with Gregg Wallace and John Torode 4 Six new amateur chefs entered the MasterChef kitchen on tonight's episode Credit: BBC THE AXE FALLS Wallace was the first of the two hosts to be sacked back on July 10, with the BBC citing that they doubted his ability to change 'learned behaviour' as a reason for his axing. The report concluded that Gregg, who was diagnosed as autistic midway through the investigation, "struggled to distinguish the boundaries between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour in the workplace.' The findings also referenced reputational damage to the Corporation in light of comments Wallace has made about it since he was taken off air. Wallace has hosted MasterChef alongside Torode since 2005 and has also fronted other BBC programmes including Inside the Factory and Supermarket Secrets. In late 2024, it was reported that the BBC had been made aware of complaints dating back to 2017, while it was claimed that a letter had been sent to the broadcaster in 2022 stating that women had been made to feel 'uncomfortable' in his presence. However, he has been cleared of the most serious allegations, including those made by high profile names including Kirsty Wark and Penny Lancaster. GREGG BACKS CO-STAR In an explosive sit down interview with The Sun, Wallace said that he was not a 'groper, a sex pest or a flasher'. He also backed Torode, insisting: 'He is not a racist.'

'Everyone is saying he could be the one, so don't be surprised if she marries again.'

fan fury Furious MasterChef fans 'switch off' new series after BBC's decision to air despite John Torode & Gregg Wallace axings FURIOUS MasterChef fans declared they will 'switch off' the new series - as it aired despite its hosts being axed. The BBC cooking programme has been hit by a wave of controversy in the weeks leading up to the new series. A report revealed more than 40 historic complaints against Gregg had been upheld, along with a claim that John once used a racist term. The Beeb has decided to go ahead with airing the new season of MasterChef, which features Gregg and John as hosts, because it was recorded before the report was commissioned. Writing online, viewers have hit back at this decision and said they will 'not watch' the programme. Advertisement One wrote on X: "@BBCOne MasterChef should definitely NOT have gone ahead with Wallace and Torode as presenters. "The decision is demeaning and insulting to all those affected by what they did and drags the programme to the gutter. We will not watch it!" Another penned: "Just a reminder not to watch #masterchef tonight. #r4today." A third remarked: "I hope no one watches #MasterChef #BBC." Advertisement While a fourth chimed in: "How is this allowed to air on Prime-time BBC One? "This just proves the BBC do not care about anything their staff do under their employment." MasterChef returns with Gregg Wallace and John Torode - but fans spot HUGE changes to show The Sun told how Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt is set to be MasterChef's new host. In addition, The Sun understood he could be joined by fellow Beeb chef Andi Oliver, 62, who presents Great British Menu. Advertisement A spokesperson for the broadcaster said previously: "After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. "MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. "The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey. 'This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. Advertisement "In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. "We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC. 'However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. "We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series.
